The 2025 TV schedule has been a wild time for the world of S.W.A.T., as the show's third cancellation by CBS has actually stuck without a last-minute rescue. Shortly after the series finale aired on the network, however, news broke that leading man Shemar Moore would actually be reprising his role as Hondo for a new spinoff called S.W.A.T. Exiles with a new cast. For Rochelle Aytes, who recurred on the drama between Seasons 3-8, she still has a home on CBS thanks to Watson, and she spoke with CinemaBlend about sticking around after S.W.A.T.
Less than two months after Rochelle Aytes' final appearance in S.W.A.T. as Nichelle Carmichael opposite former Criminal Minds co-star Shemar Moore, she debuted as Dr. Mary Morstan opposite Morris Chestnut on CBS' new doctor-detective drama Watson. The first-season show earned an early Season 2 renewal, which Aytes described as "just a blessing." I went on to ask the actress how it feels for her to have Watson as a new CBS home with S.W.A.T.'s end then looming, and she shared:
It's bittersweet, because I really did enjoy my five years on S.W.A.T., but it's just such a blessing. I'm so grateful to CBS for keeping me in the family, keeping me working, and it's yet another wonderful character that I get to live in and play. The cast of S.W.A.T. [and] the crew was amazing. Now I'm blessed to have an amazing cast and crew on Watson, so I couldn't ask for anything else.
The early renewal for Watson didn't come as a huge shock, after it got off to a very strong start with its post-NFL premiere in January. Plus, per CBS, viewership numbers ranked the series premiere as CBS' most-watched scripted episode of the 2024-2025 TV season as well as the most-streamed CBS Original scripted episode. Viewers weren't necessarily missing out if they weren't watching live on CBS; fans were clearly checking out the drama with a Paramount+ subscription as well.
But after working with Shemar Moore on Criminal Minds and then more regularly on S.W.A.T., what has it been like for Rochelle Aytes to have The Resident's Morris Chestnut as a co-star? I asked Aytes that very question, and she only had good things to say about Chestnut as Dr. John Watson. She said:
Working with Morris has been such a treat. First of all, he is such a delightful human being. He's ready to work. He's professional. He's so sweet, and we just talk about the characters. We rehearse. He's always willing to go over lines as much as possible, and he's right there. He's so there for me and I'm there for him. I think because of that, we're able to connect and trust each other, and I think that that'll continue to grow... It's more like we're a team, and it's been fun to work with him.
Luckily, the big death of the Season 1 finale wasn't Mary or John, so we'll get to see more of the exes when Season 2 premieres. The only unfortunate news is that the second season will get a midseason premiere just like the first did, which means no more Watson until early 2026 as part of CBS' 2025-2026 TV lineup reveal.

For now, fans can always revisit the 13-episode first season of Watson streaming on Paramount+, as well as the eighth and final season of S.W.A.T. For the first seven seasons, you'll have to use a Netflix subscription.
As Shemar Moore himself noted when he was still pushing for the show to be rescued, the action-drama was a hit with streaming on Netflix. As for S.W.A.T. Exiles, no network or platform has been announced for the spinoff at the time of writing, so the wait is on for updates.

Paramount controlling shareholder Shari Redstone diagnosed with thyroid cancer

Media mogul Shari Redstone, CBS parent Paramount's controlling shareholder, has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. "Shari Redstone was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this spring. While it has been a challenging period, she is maintaining all professional and philanthropic activities throughout her treatment, which is ongoing. She and her family are grateful that her prognosis is excellent," Redstone's spokesperson told Fox News Digital. The 71-year-old has frequently been in the news this year as she seeks the Trump administration's approval of a multibillion-dollar planned merger with Skydance Media and has given lawyers the green light to settle President Donald Trump's election interference lawsuit against CBS News, although no deal has been reached. Redstone wanted the opinion of doctors "about two months ago after experiencing fatigue and other symptoms," according to The New York Times, which first reported the diagnosis. She underwent surgery in May. The Times noted that she was quickly diagnosed and surgeons removed her thyroid gland but were unable to remove all the cancer cells because they'd spread to her vocal cords. Redstone controls more than three-quarters of Paramount's Class A voting shares through National Amusements, the company she took control of in 2016 when her media mogul father, Sumner Redstone, was deemed too incapacitated to run the company. He died in 2020. Redstone, who recused herself from settlement discussions related to the Trump lawsuit in February, isn't thrilled with being tied up in litigation with the sitting president and wants to get things resolved. Fox News Digital confirmed last week that Trump rejected a $15 million offer to settle his lawsuit. The talks are ongoing, but the president's legal team is demanding at least $25 million and an apology from CBS News. Many industry insiders believe the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will wait until the lawsuit is in the rearview mirror before deciding if the planned merger with Skydance Media will be approved. Redstone is set for a significant windfall if she's able to flip Paramount to Skydance. Bloomberg reported last year that she would receive $180 million in severance on top of the roughly $350 million she would pocket from the merger. Skydance Media CEO David Ellison, who would take control of CBS as head of the newly formed Paramount Skydance Corp. if the merger is finalized, was aware of Redstone's cancer diagnosis, according to the Times.

Derrick Henry's spot in future Adam Sandler film hinges on cracking this NFL milestone

Coming to the big screen near you: Adam Sandler and Derrick Henry (maybe). This week, Baltimore's star running back revealed to Dan Patrick, a good friend of Sandler's, that Sandler is his favorite actor and that he'd love to meet him one day. Patrick then upped the ante as he told Henry, who compiled 1,921 rushing yards last season in his first year with the Ravens, that if he could surpass 2,000 yards next season, he'd make sure to get him a spot in a Sandler movie. Advertisement 3 Adam Sandler spoke to Derrick Henry in a video to agree to the deal that would land Henry a role in a Sandler movie. The Dan Patrick Show The iconic actor and comedian agreed wholeheartedly. 'Yo Derrick, I just woke up, you know that. That's why I look disgusting — on top of the fact that I am disgusting,' Sandler joked at the start of a video message for Henry. 'I love ya, congrats on everything, 2,000 yards-plus gets you not only in the movie, but we have a nice dinner together and we talk about Dan Patrick's facial hair and how hard it is to grow it.' Advertisement Henry watched the video, grinning ear to ear. 'That's my dog, man,' Henry said as Sandler's message concluded. 'Hell yeah, man, that's cool as hell.' Henry then sent a heartfelt message to Patrick to thank him for getting him in contact with his favorite actor. Advertisement 'Dan thank you for sending the message for the video, that was really cool!' the Ravens running back wrote. 'Much love!' 3 Dan Patrick helped Derrick Henry get in contact with Adam Sandler. The Dan Patrick Show So, the stakes have been raised. Henry has reached 2,000 yards in a season just once across his nine-year NFL career — hitting the mark in year No. 5 of his eight seasons spent with the Tennessee Titans. Advertisement In his inaugural season with the Ravens in 2024-25, he just barely missed the mark. 3 Derrick Henry came up just short of 2,000 yards last season. AP But by coming up just 79 yards short, the 31-year-old — who was awarded a $30 million extension with the Ravens last month — certainly showed that he's got some left in the tank as he looks to jumpstart his movie career on the one condition that Patrick and Sandler laid out for him. The five-time Pro Bowler and 2020 AP Offensive Player of the Year has appeared in plenty of advertisements and commercials across his NFL years, so he's got some acting chops already.

Jaguars' Travis Hunter is not looking to become trendsetter, just being himself

WATCH THE FULL ACTION SPORTS JAX INTERVIEW WITH TRAVIS HUNTER IN THE VIDEO PLAYER ABOVE From a young age, Travis Hunter, the 2025 first-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, knew his dream was to play in the NFL. Advertisement Growing up in South Florida, his father was a football and track athlete for Boynton Beach Community High School, so football was simply a part of who Hunter was as a young boy. 'Since I first picked up a football, when I was about four years old, always wanted to be on the biggest stage,' Hunter said. Hunter has played with that same level of energy his entire life. It's fairly common to play both sides of the ball in high school. The twelve-minute quarters, running clock, and simplicity of the game at that level make it far more of a possibility than in college or the NFL. Advertisement RELATED: 1-On-1 with Jaguars' Travis Hunter: To understand the player, you must first understand the man While Hunter might have been an elite athlete playing on both sides of the ball, it was simply his love for the game that led him to become who he is today. 'I think because a lot of people tell me I can't do it, but also I love just being on the football field, I grew up playing both sides of the ball, and never coming off the football field. I have high energy, as you can tell. I just love being on the football field and do my job,' Hunter told Action News Jax. Whether it's his five-star rating, state championship, Heisman trophy, or draft pedigree, Hunter's success and the way he plays the game have never been seen before in the modern era. It's that propensity to break records and to change the way the sport is played that makes Hunter so intriguing as a player. Every play, Hunter is doing something never before seen. RELATED: Jaguars' Travis Hunter is fitting in just fine in Jacksonville It certainly helps that he does it out of pure joy. Few seem to enjoy the game as much as Hunter. Advertisement It's wholesome and endearing. That said, Hunter isn't looking to become a trendsetter and get more young athletes to attempt to play both sides of the ball. It's just the path he chose. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] 'A lot of people play high school ball or Pop Warner and play both sides of the ball pretty natural thing for an elite athlete, but do you think more people will try to do what you're doing?' Action Sports Jax's Brent Martineau asked. 'I don't think they will try to do what I do. I hope they go out and be themself and if it comes to them, they go and do it, but I'm not trying to be a trendsetter, my journey is what I do,' Hunter said. Advertisement While it isn't Hunter's intention, it might be naive to think that kids won't be looking to emulate the Heisman winner's ability to play both sides. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] Hunter has immediately become one of the NFL's most popular players, and intriguing stories. Much like Shoehei Ohtani opened the way for two-way players in MLB, Travis Hunter has made the impossible possible in football. The jury is still out as to what extent Hunter will play both sides of the ball, however, he's certainly got the talent, and if his prior success is any indication, NFL fans may see history being made in Jacksonville.
