PHS senior Erica Martinez wins Toyota Corolla from Palestine Toyota
Palestine senior Erica Martinez said God answered her prayers Monday at Wildcat Stadium.
'I had only shot to get picked and I was shaking the whole time. I prayed the whole time, so God really did this for me,' Martinez said. 'In the beginning, I figured I wasn't getting the car but when it became a 50-50 shot, I thought I might have a chance.'
Martinez had a one-in-10 chance of winning a Toyota Corolla during the 2025 Driven to Succeed program, sponsored by Palestine Toyota and Kim's Convenience Store. She was the ninth name drawn from Palestine Toyota owner Chuck Eldridge.
'This year is the third faithful year to not only do it here but across town so a special shoutout to Michael Armstrong, Kim Cole and the family for what they do during this event,' Eldridge said.
Kim's provided $1,500 for fuel in gift cards to the winner of the car.
Eldridge said giving away the cars brings him back to his childhood when it comes to the program.
'We give all credit to God, and seeing that makes my heart full,' Eldridge said. 'It gives me a sense of hope because I didn't have a car to go to college when I was in high school and so that is part of why the program lives so close to my heart. I know that every single year, the Lord sends us someone that needs the car. I couldn't be happier for her and her family.'
Larissa Loveless, public relations director for Palestine Independent School District said Martinez getting the car embodied what the program means overall.
'The recent Driven to Succeed car giveaway by Palestine Toyota — awarding a vehicle and $1,500 in fuel to PHS senior Erica Martinez — is more than just a generous act,' Loveless said. 'It's a bold, beautiful example of what happens when businesses, schools, families and communities come together with a shared purpose: to celebrate and uplift student success.'
Students become part of the program with perfect attendance throughout the year. During each six weeks, students have a chance to get a ping pong ball submitted for a higher chance at selection.
'At Palestine ISD, we know that positive messages are most powerful when they come from every direction — from the classroom, from home and from the wider community,' Loveless said. 'That's what makes this moment so impactful. It tells our students: your hard work is noticed, your future is worth investing in, and we are all behind you.'
Eldridge said the main message of the Driven to Succeed program is make sure you are in school.
'I got to tell you that the program helps kids understand that being at school helps them to learn,' Eldridge said. 'Also, the perfect attendance is how the schools are funded. Plus it is hard to get an education when you are not sitting in a school house.'
Martinez said she was grateful for the one shot she received at picking the key.
'It means a lot because I don't have a car yet,' Martinez said. 'It is going to help me and my family out. I am very grateful for all of the people who helped me get this far. I am grateful for the community and for them helping to get me this far. God only knows what the future will hold for me.'
Eldridge said the excitement and community support is what keeps the program going strong.
'It makes us want to do this again. When you see the kids interacting together, it is having the best day of her life,' Eldridge said. 'Giving back to the kids is one of the two favorite days for me as a business owner in town. I want to thank Kim's for their loyalty every single year and the community and PISD for helping us do this.'

‘Why I Hate New Cars': Man Tries to Replace a Headlight Bulb on His 2022 Toyota Corolla. Then He Learns Something Unexpected
A 2022 Toyota Corolla owner was shocked to discover how expensive and time consuming it is to replace a burnt out headlight on his vehicle. Derek (@wrenchin_derek) posted a TikTok about his experience that's garnered more than 573,000 views so far. All this stress results from a design choice that necessitates not only removing the bumper, but swapping out the car's entire headlight assembly. Normally, Derek states, such a fix would cost $20 and a few minutes. It's engineering like this, he argues, that has many folks reluctant to purchase newer cars. Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . Headlight Out Derek begins his video standing in front of a red 2022 Toyota Corolla with an open hood. He's already frustrated. 'This is why I hate new cars,' he proclaims before delving into his story. 'Last night, I'm driving home, I pass my parents. They call me say, 'Hey you got a headlight out. You need to replace that before you get pulled over.'' The TikToker assumed that this would be an easy enough procedure. For instance, as a YouTuber demonstrated , in a 2007 Toyota Corolla you just pop the hood, locate the headlight unit, and swap in a new bulb. Derek says replacing the light on his 2022 Corolla wasn't so straightforward. 'This morning I wake up, I come out, to pull the headlight bulb out of this Toyota Corolla. 22' Toyota Corolla. And I come to the discovery that it's a sealed unit.' Changing the light in a sealed unit proves it isn't 2007 anymore. 'The bulb is not serviceable. So in order to replace it you have to replace the whole assembly. Which requires taking this bumper off.' No Bulb For You As if the sealed unit weren't bad enough, Derek's problems compounded when he called a local parts store to purchase a new light. He says he was told the bulbs weren't for sale, meaning he had precious few options for fixing his own headlight. Instead of just purchasing a single bulb, Derek was faced with a new expenditure: an entirely new assembly unit. 'I'm like, 'Yeah I know I gotta buy the whole headlight assembly. How much is that?' And they say, 'You don't want to know.'' When Derek asked if it was 'that bad,' he says a worker replied, 'Oh it's bad. You're looking at anywhere from $1,000 to $1,100 for this driver's side headlight.' Derek was astounded. 'Jesus freaking Christ,' he says in the TikTok. 'Uh, no. For one.' Then She's Told It's Totaled, Costs $27K To 'Fix 5 Wires' Other Options Derek then began scouring the internet for better deals. However, this didn't solve his problem of having a burnt out headlight. 'Cheapest one I could find was on Amazon for $120 for this particular model, XSE. But then I'm waiting a few days which means it's not gonna come in before I gotta drive to work in the mornings. Further, there's the process of replacing an entire headlight assembly. This is much more time consuming than simply switching out a bulb. Derek estimates it'll take him an entire afternoon. At this point in the video, Derek directs his lens into the engine bay of the Corolla to demonstrate that the headlight could have been made easily accessible. 'It's not like I have no room to get back there to it. Like I got all kinds of room. I could've had…a bulb that's serviceable.' Toyota Headlight Woes Derek says that bulbs for his other vehicle cost about $60 for two of the 'best.' And changing one would've taken him about 20 minutes. Of the Corolla, he says, 'Freaking waiting a few days for a headlight to come in. And then a few hours to replace it.' He believes these design choices dissuade folks from purchasing new vehicles. 'And people wonder why they don't want to buy new cars. Because they make things so unserviceable and so pricey. Why would you want to?' 'With Enough Glue and Tape It Should Hold' People were universally appalled by the cost and effort to change the headlight in Derek's 2022 Toyota Corolla. One opined that sealed front lamps should have extended shelf lives. 'An unserviceable led headlight should last longer than 3 years,' they said. Another highlighted how such a maneuver produces an inordinate amount of waste, yet 'meanwhile they have us drinking from cardboard/paper straws.' Another TikToker said that such exorbitant pricing would force them to come up with a creative solution. 'Personally, for $1000 I'm drilling and jigsawing the bulb out and wiring up a replacement. With enough glue and tape it should hold.' Another speculated this is part of a concentrated effort from auto manufacturers to fleece its customers. 'They don't want you independently working on cars. They want you under their thumb for everything.' Motor1 has reached out to Toyota via email and Derek via TikTok comment for further information. New Pal catcher, valedictorian balances baseball with engineering future: 'Just trying to juggle everything'
New Palestine catcher Jackson Kamp watched the pain his grandmother, Debby Fisher, dealt with on a daily basis after undergoing multiple joint replacement surgeries. As a kid, Kamp wanted to study aerospace engineering and design airplanes, but finding a solution to his grandmother's pain sparked his interest in biomedical engineering. Kamp wants to design joint replacements, prosthetics and surgery robots, things that can really make a difference in people's lives. The senior is a dedicated student, valedictorian of his class with a 4.11 GPA. Before he solves the world's problems as an engineer, the Dragons (24-3) backstop will be tasked with slowing down the Guerin Catholic (18-12) offense during Saturday's Class 3A semistate semifinals. "Behind the plate, it definitely helps a lot," Kamp said of his intelligence. "It allows me to see things and study them. It can get me into trouble at the plate sometimes, though, starting to overthink things a little bit, but behind the plate, there's never enough time for that. It lets me make decisions quickly based on what I see. It makes it easy to see patterns. So, when I see the patterns, I know, oh, I need to do this." Balancing academics and athletics was not an easy task for Kamp. There were nights where the senior stayed up until 1 or 2 a.m., after games studying and finishing up homework. Kamp also had to sacrifice his social life to maintain his grades. "Just trying to juggle everything, it's definitely not easy," Kamp said. "My parents were always on me about using my time wisely, because I'm still a teenager and want to have fun with my friends and stuff, but they were like, 'if you want to accomplish this goal, you might have to give up something else.'" "He's probably one of the hardest workers I know," added senior pitcher Rigg Mahurin. "To be able to have his GPA and to be one of the better baseball players on the field, it just takes that much more work. ... He's usually one of the first ones out here, doesn't put his cleats on yet, just goes straight to setting the field up for practice. He's the last one off the field, last one to take reps. He's just that kid to stay after and just put the work in when he knows he needs it." Kamp and Mahurin have developed into a shutdown battery. Kamp relays the calls from coach Shawn Lyons to the pitching staff and the defense. Kamp caught Mahurin's nine-strikeout no-hitter against Cascade in the regional championship. Mahurin has not allowed an earned run over three postseason starts. For the season, Mahurin is 9-1 with a 1.38 ERA and 85 strikeouts over 60⅔ innings. Kamp's experience and ability to process the game keeps him in sync with his coach and pitchers. Lyons trusts his backstop to make the right signals based on what he's seeing from the dugout, and Kamp has the defensive ability to execute all the plays on the diamond. The Anderson commit has a .977 fielding percentage, with nine assists and just five errors in 216 chances. At the plate, Kamp is batting .311 with 19 runs scored, 26 RBIs, seven doubles, one triple and a team-high six home runs. "He's my quarterback for the defense," Lyons said of Kamp. "He'll make sure the pitcher and him are on the same page. He'll let me know, 'hey the umpire is really tight. Or he's giving a ball on the outside or the inside (of the plate).' We're always communicating. "Jackson has been with us since his freshman year. ... They understand our coaches. They understand where we're coming from, and they trust the process." Just two games from the state championship is a familiar place for the Dragons. In 2022-23, they lost in the semistate semifinals to Castle. Last season, New Pal lost in the semistate semis again, this time in extra innings to Class 4A runner-up Mooresville. There's a sting that comes from getting that close to the championship and coming up short. Failure is painful, but New Pal is hoping to build from the experience gained over the past two seasons. "The atmosphere is crazy," Kamp said of the semistate tournament. "So, if you've never been in it, it's surreal. Having that experience just lets you play instead of being all tight because you're like, 'oh, there's a lot of people in the stands right now.'"
