Greensboro police stress safety after crashes

Yahoo24-05-2025

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Greensboro police want drivers to be safe this Memorial Day.
So far in May, FOX 8 reported on at least three crashes: one on Fleming Road, a second on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and a third on South Elm Eugene Street.
These crashes have left people with injuries, and Greensboro police are stressing the importance of making good driving decisions.
Now that it's Memorial Day weekend, there will be even more people on the road over the next several days.
'We're seeing an increase of alcohol and drug-impaired drivers. We have more people on the road, so that does increase the propensity for crashes,' Sergeant A.D. Reed from the Greensboro Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit said.
That's why some drivers like Roman Walker are hitting the road early.
'Just trying to stay ahead of those guys and nighttime driving,' Walker said.
Walker said he plans to drive nine hours up to New York for the Memorial Day weekend. He is expecting there to be a lot of traffic, so he's making a plan.
'Drive in the slow lane, I like to drive at like 6 a.m., 7 a.m. … Get ahead of the traffic a little bit earlier in the morning and at night. It tends to be more sleepy drivers and trailers because you know those guys work pretty hard,' he said.
While Greensboro police say drowsy drivers are something to be concerned about, they have an even bigger concern this weekend.
'Roughly about 10% of our crashes during this time of the year … are going to involve alcohol and drug impairment,' Reed said.
According to AAA, 39.4 million people will be driving over the Memorial Day weekend, which is a 3% increase from last year. If you are one of them, Officer Thomas Fetzer wants you to keep something in mind.
'Make sure you are driving safely and paying attention to the laws and the speed limit. Wear your seatbelt. Put your phones down and any distractions down. I promise if you are going to the beach or the mountains, there are still going to be there regardless of how slow you're going to drive,' Fetzer said
If you break any of these laws, Greensboro police want you to know they will be watching.
'This will be a very popular weekend for checkpoints throughout the entire station … We will be looking for violations of motor vehicle law and keeping impaired drivers off the road,' Reed said.

Is the Nissan Rogue good on fuel? What it would cost to refuel Tennessee's most popular car

One of the most important financial factors to consider when searching for a new or used car is the cost of fuel. Thanks to modern technological innovations and a global push to reduce carbon emissions, vehicles are more efficient than ever before. The Nissan Rogue is easily one of the most popular vehicles in the state of Tennessee. So, how much should 2025 Nissan Rogue owners and potential buyers expect to spend on fuel in Tennessee? The 2025 Nissan Rogue small SUV has a 14.5-gallon gas tank. Tennessee's average state gas price (at the time of writing) is around $2.70 a gallon according to So, $2.70 a gallon multiplied by the SUV's 14.5-gallon tank gives you a cost of $39.15 to completely refuel a 2025 Rogue in the Volunteer State. Since the Nissan Rogue achieves 33 miles per gallon combined, $39.15 worth of gas (the approximate cost of a full tank) in Tennessee equates to a driving range of about 478 miles (33 miles per gallon x 14.5-gallon tank) before needing to refuel again. A 2024 advice blog post from Kelley Blue Book claims that the average driver travels close to 14,489 miles a year. Dividing the average annual miles a Rogue in Tennessee can accumulate (14,489 miles) by its driving range (478 miles) equals the average times drivers need to refuel the SUV in a year (at least 30 times). A 2025 Nissan Rogue in Tennessee has a minimum annual fuel expenditure of about $1,174.50 based on the following factors: Cost of a full tank of gas based on cost per gallon ($2.70 a gallon) multiplied by the Rogue's tank size (14.5 gallons) = $39.15 Average annual driving range (14,489 miles) divided by Nissan Rogue full tank range (478 miles) = 30 full tanks of gas a year Cost of a full tank of gas for the Nissan Rogue ($39.15) multiplied by a year's worth of fuel (30 tanks) = $1,174.50 to refuel the Nissan Rogue a year, assuming the driver travels an average of 14,489 miles a year When it comes to fuel costs, the Rogue is among the most affordable SUVs to own. Another popular small SUV, the 2025 Honda CR-V, also achieves 30 miles per gallon combined. Nissan's small SUV is one of the few models in its segment to use a three-cylinder engine instead of a four-cylinder engine. This powertrain setup makes the Rogue more efficient than several key rivals, allowing for more driving range despite having a similar tank size. The 2025 Nissan Rogue starts at $28,590. It comes in five trims. The Rogue uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine to produce 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Voice recognition Remote keyless entry Cruise control Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of safety features The 2025 Nissan Rogue is a "comfortable, fuel-efficient compact SUV with plenty of technology" according to Kelley Blue Book. AAA warns parents about counterfeit and unsafe car seats

WESTWOOD, Mass. (WWLP) – In the search for savings, parents are being warned not to gamble with their child's safety. AAA Northeast is urging families to steer clear of counterfeit and secondhand car seats, which have become increasingly common online and could fail to protect children in the event of a crash. While raising kids can be costly, experts stress that cutting corners on car seats may come with serious risks. Fake car seats and harnesses—often sold on popular websites at deep discounts—may look like trusted brands, but lack critical safety features and federal approval. Amherst-Pelham Regional School District receives electric school bus grant funding To help families avoid counterfeit products, AAA Northeast offered tips to identify legitimate car seats. Approved models should include a detailed instruction manual and registration card. They are required to display safety certification labels with the manufacturer's name, date of manufacture, and, in many cases, an expiration date. Labels should also state: 'This child restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards.' Newer seats often feature QR codes linking directly to the manufacturer's website, and every approved car seat must include a three-point harness. Consumers are also advised to check for misspellings, poor grammar, or off-center text on any labeling, which can indicate a fake. Parents who are still unsure about a seat's authenticity can contact the manufacturer directly with the serial number for verification. To avoid falling victim to counterfeit sales in the first place, AAA Northeast recommends purchasing directly from manufacturers or through verified retailers. For online purchases, shoppers should ensure the car seat is sold and shipped by a first-party seller, such as Amazon or Walmart, and not from an unverified third party. Listings from third-party sellers should include a U.S.-based customer service number, ideally with an 800 area code. Consumers are also encouraged to shop in person at reputable stores when possible. AAA strongly advises against buying car seats from online marketplaces like eBay, Temu, Wish, or Alibaba, or from social media advertisements that do not clearly identify the manufacturer or authorized seller. Used car seats, even those appearing in good condition, pose another risk. AAA urges families to avoid buying from garage sales, Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist, as there's no way to confirm whether the seat was involved in a crash or if it meets current safety standards. With child passenger safety on the line, experts say the safest seat is one that's new, verified, and meets all federal requirements. When in doubt, AAA recommends contacting the car seat's manufacturer or speaking with a certified child passenger safety technician. Canadian Grand Prix to run on the same day as the Indianapolis 500 in 2026

The Canadian Grand Prix will be held at the same time as the Indianapolis 500 in 2026. (Photo by Bryn Lennon - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty Images) The days of the Monaco Grand Prix preceding the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend are gone. At least for now. Formula 1 released its 2026 schedule on Tuesday and it includes the series going head-to-head with the Indianapolis 500. The Monaco Grand Prix has moved back to June and will take place on June 7. In its place is the Canadian Grand Prix, which will be held on May 24. Advertisement This year's Canadian Grand Prix is set to be held on Sunday and has traditionally been held in mid-June. But next year's date swap is being made for travel-related reasons. Monaco will be the first race of the season in Europe. By moving the Canadian Grand Prix up and Monaco back, F1 will have nine straight European races. Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix is set to start at 2 p.m. ET for a primetime start in Europe. Assuming the race keeps that start time, it will overlap with the end of the Indy 500. The Indy 500 was scheduled to go green at 12:45 p.m. ET this year but was delayed for rain showers. The Monaco Grand Prix hasn't been held on Memorial Day weekend every year of its existence, but its absence from the same day of the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 will be a stark change for race fans who have become accustomed to watching all three events in the same day. The ninth and final European race of the year will also be a new race on the calendar. F1 will host a second race in Spain on a street circuit in Madrid on Sept. 13. That race replaces Imola on the calendar. Imola has held a spring Grand Prix in recent years, but is being dropped for 2026 and beyond. Advertisement The 2026 season begins again in Australia before races in China and Japan ahead of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The Miami Grand Prix will be on May 3, while the United States Grand Prix in Austin will be on Oct. 25 and the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be on Nov. 21. The Vegas race will again be followed by races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi to close the season. 2026 Formula 1 schedule March 8: Australian Grand Prix March 15: Chinese Grand Prix March 29: Japanese Grand Prix April 12: Bahrain Grand Prix April 19: Saudi Arabian Grand Prix May 3: Miami Grand Prix May 24: Canadian Grand Prix June 7: Monaco Grand Prix June 14: Spanish Grand Prix Advertisement June 28: Austrian Grand Prix July 5: British Grand Prix July 19: Belgian Grand Prix July 26: Hungarian Grand Prix Aug. 23: Dutch Grand Prix Sept. 6: Italian Grand Prix Sept. 13: Madrid Grand Prix Sept. 27: Azerbaijan Grand Prix Oct. 11: Singapore Grand Prix Oct. 25: United States Grand Prix Nov. 1: Mexico Grand Prix Nov. 8: São Paulo Grand Prix Nov. 21: Las Vegas Grand Prix Nov. 29: Qatar Grand Prix Dec. 6: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
