FIH Pro League: Wasteful India concede late goal to lose 2-3 against Netherlands; Abhishek plays 100th match

India went down to Netherlands in the FIH Pro League hockey in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Amstelveen (The Netherlands): A wasteful Indian men's hockey yet again conceded a late goal to lose 2-3 against the Olympic champions Netherlands, enduring their second consecutive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League on Monday. For India, Abhishek, playing his 100th match, scored in 20th minute, while Jugraj Singh converted his team's ninth penalty corner in 54th minute. The Netherlands scored through Thijs van Dam (24th), Tjep Hoedemakers (33rd) and Jip Janssen (57th). India had earlier lost 1-2 against the Netherlands on Saturday. India started on the front foot in the first quarter with as many as nine circle penetrations, but the goals eluded the visitors. India had the first chance of the match in the sixth minute but Abhishek's shot went wide. Soon, Shilanand Lakra snatched the ball in the midfield and raced his way into the Dutch circle only to shoot wide. Tjep Hoedemakers got the first scoring opportunity for the Dutchmen but his reverse hit from a tight angle was off the target. Minutes later, Hoedemakers got another chance but his deflection went wide. The Indians secured the first penalty corner of the match in the 18th but the Dutch defended well to deny India skipper Harmanpreet Singh. But two minutes later, Abhishek handed India the lead with a fierce shot to the top of the Dutch goal after being set up by Lakra. India's joy, however, was short-lived as four minutes later Thijs van Dam found himself at the right place at the right time to level the scores after the ball, from Thierry Brinkman's pass, hit an Indian stick and popped up in front of the goal. The Dutch dominated the early exchanges after the change of ends and took the lead three minutes into the third quarter through Hoedemakers, who neatly deflected in Derck de Vilder's pass. Minutes later, Netherlands got their first penalty corner but the effort went wide. Thereafter it was all India as they secured as many as six penalty corners in quick succession but Harmanpreet and Jugraj Singh failed to convert any of them. The Indians were guilty of wasting chances, converting just one of the nine penalty corners they secured in the match. Towards the end of the third quarter, India got as many as five penalty corners in quick succession but Harmanpreet and Jugraj failed to breach the Dutch defence. In the 54th minute India got two more penalty corners, the second of which was converted by Jugraj to level the scores. But as has often been the case, the Indians conceded another late goal when Janssen converted the Netherlands' second penalty corner three minutes from the hooter to seal the match. India will next play Argentina on Wednesday.

"It's A Huge Honour": James Anderson On India-England Test Series Named After Him

Former right-arm seamer James Anderson said that it was a "huge honour" that the Test series between India and England has been named after him and India's legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar. Cricketing legends Tendulkar and Anderson will now have a special place in the India-England Test rivalry, as the two boards, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), have decided to name the Test series between the two countries on them (Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy). Previously, the Test series in England was known as the Pataudi Trophy, named after former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. When the series was played in India, it was called the Anthony de Mello Trophy, in honour of one of the BCCI's founding members and its first secretary and president. The new trophy will be officially unveiled by Tendulkar and Anderson at Lord's during the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which begins on June 11. This change comes just ahead of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with India and England set to play a five-match Test series starting June 20 at Headingley in Leeds. Speaking during a DP World event at Lord's, Anderson told ESPNcricinfo, "It's a huge honour. I still can't quite believe it. Sachin is someone I looked up to when I was growing up, though I don't want to do him a disservice with his age. I remember watching him, an absolute legend of the game, and I played against him a lot as well. So to have this trophy is a huge honour for me, and I couldn't be more proud." Anderson, who recently retired after playing 188 Tests, is regarded as England's greatest fast bowler. Tendulkar, widely considered one of the greatest batters in the game's history, played 200 Tests before retiring in 2013. India tour of England will take place from June to August 2025, with matches to be played at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). This will be India's first bilateral series since both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this month. England squad for the 1st Test: Ben Stokes (C), Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. International cricket to debut at New Chandigarh stadium with Ind vs Aus women series in Sept

Over a year after its completion and hosting two IPL seasons, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium in New Chandigarh is finally set to make its international debut. Having missed out on hosting the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup matches, the stadium will serve as the venue for first two one-day international (ODI) games of the India vs Australia three-match women's series to be played on September 14 and 17, respectively. Meanwhile, the third ODI tie will be held at the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) Arun Jaitley stadium on September 20. Earlier, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was to organise all three ODIs of the series, but due to the revamp work of its outfield, the matches have been moved out. The development comes as a fresh breeze for PCA, as BCCI had recently removed its New Chandigarh stadium as one of the venues during the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup, beginning in September-end. The PCA stadium in Mohali's Phase 9 had last hosted some T20 Women's World Cup matches in 2016. After a gap of nine years, international women's cricket will return to the region, with the twin ODIs featuring India and Australia women. This series will act as a preparation for both the teams for the World Cup. The ICC Women's ODI World Cup will be held at four venues across India. Pakistan will play all their matches at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The New Chandigarh stadium had recently successfully hosted Qualifier 1 and Eliminator during the IPL, which Royal Bengaluru Challengers (RCB) eventually won in Ahmedabad. Completed in February 2024, the New Chandigarh stadium was allotted these IPL games due to the one-week break in the tournament and onset of early monsoon. Otherwise other venues were supposed to stage these IPL play-offs. Before the play-offs, the New Chandigarh stadium also hosted four Punjab Kings (PBKS) home league matches in April. Later this year, the same stadium will also organise a T20I game between India and South Africa on December 11.
