Watch Toyota's GR Garage Restore a Third-Gen Supra and Make It Like New
Toyota currently offers many hard-to-find replacement parts for its iconic vehicles.
With new parts on the way for 2025, the automaker's GR Garage restored a third-generation Supra to show what's possible.
This car, torn apart to a bare body shell and then built up again, is basically a brand-new 1992 Supra.
Toyota first announced that it would be making replacement parts for its heritage vehicles back in 2019, at the launch of the then-new fifth-generation Supra. Earlier this year, it expanded that program to include more parts for older Land Cruisers, the third- and fourth- generation Supra, and even the scrappy little AE86 Corolla. As you'd expect for something aimed at enthusiasts, the program is run through the Gazoo Racing division as GR Heritage Parts. In an effort to promote this work, Toyota brought a third-generation Supra into GR Garage, and restored it from the ground up.
Factory restorations are almost commonplace for European marques like Jaguar Land Rover or Ferrari, but are a relatively new phenomenon in Japan. You can probably thank Mazda for the trend, as it was one of the first to offer in-house restorations, as well as reproducing new parts, initially for the NA Miata. According to the Mazda employees who set up that replacement parts program, some of the first phone calls they received after the announcement were from Nissan and Honda, curious about how they might also set up heritage parts efforts.
Thus, Honda now offers an NSX restoration program in Japan (and has said that a U.S. effort is under consideration), while Nissan offers parts for older Skylines under its NISMO brand. Further, Mazda has expanded its factory restoration program to the FD-chassis twin-turbo RX-7, though there have been some delays to rolling out those plans.
For the GR Garage restoration, a Supra model not sold in the U.S. was used: a 1992 Supra 2.5 GT. Fitted with a twin-turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-six, this car made the maximum, unofficially mandated 276-hp cap in the so-called "gentleman's agreement" among Japan's automakers. While not quite as legendary as the fourth-gen Supra that followed it, this generation of Supra has plenty of fans on both sides of the Pacific.
The car looks to be in pretty good shape initially, but some careful examination turns up a few bodged repairs and rust. GR technicians cut, disassemble, and take the Supra completely down to a bare body shell before welding in replacement steel and respraying the entire car. The whole process took two technicians six months, and the result is basically a brand-new 1992 Supra. It's now flawless. The video below shows the process (sorry, no English subtitles).
If you're a fan of golden age Japanese machinery, whether because of the cars of your youth or just hours spent playing Gran Turismo, seeing this Supra brought to concours quality is incredibly satisfying. There are any number of individual specialist shops doing this kind of work, but having the weight of an OEM manufacturer on board makes a huge difference. It's nothing but good news that Toyota is following through on preserving its heritage.

For Toyota, More Akio Would Be a Good Thing
Akio Toyoda, the scion of Toyota Motor Corp.'s founding family and former chief executive officer, generally seems to prefer being behind the wheel of a car than being in the spotlight. But with the $33 billion buyout of Toyota Industries Corp. announced on Tuesday, along with his personal investment, he might be making a corporate comeback. That would be a good thing, regardless of what the critics say.

Toyota Wants to 'Increase Power' in the GR Corolla
The Toyota GR Corolla is even better for 2025, with more torque and a new eight-speed Direct Automatic transmission. But those may not be the only changes we see to the feisty five-door over the next few years. In an interview with Chief Engineer Naoyuki Sakamoto, he revealed to Motor1 that more track goodness could make its way to the GR Corolla and GR Yaris models relatively soon—that includes additional power. "Hopefully, we can come to a measure to increase power, and eventually, with that planning, it can come to the production Corolla and GR Yaris," Sakamoto tells us. Photo by: Toyota That said, that extra power won't come easily. Sakamoto notes that the company attempted to increase the output of its TCR race car during a test of the Corolla's powertrain at Sonoma, but it wasn't successful, at least, not initially. "We tried to increase engine power with the TCR Corolla [race car], then we broke [it]," Sakamoto says. "We know the limit, we know how to increase the engine power. But still we are studying. We are always trying to push the limit…" Toyota hasn't confirmed a production GRMN Corolla (or a new GRMN Yaris, for that fact), but it's highly rumored . That model will reportedly use the same turbocharged 1.6-liter engine as the current GR Corolla, but with 'unique tuning' to produce even more torque and horsepower Photo by: Toyota That extra horsepower will be paired with track-specific upgrades like aerodynamic bodywork, a new suspension setup, better wheels, and stickier tires. The supposed GRMN prototype (pictured here) has 18-inch BBS forged wheels shod in 245/40 ZR18 tires—noticeably wider than the Circuit Edition's 235/40 ZR18 rubber. It also wears Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires instead of the standard Pilot Sport 4. The Toyota GRMN Corolla should, hopefully, show up before the end of the year, and the GRMN Yaris will likely precede it in Europe. Hopefully, we'll have details closer to a debut date. Tesla Losing Steam in Europe: What's Impeding Its Growth?
Tesla's TSLA car sales dropped significantly in several European countries in May, which marks the fifth straight month of declines. This downturn has been attributed to CEO Elon Musk's political controversies and an aging vehicle lineup. Sweden and Portugal saw some of the steepest declines, where Tesla's new car sales fell 53.7% and 68% year over year, respectively. However, overall EV sales in those countries increased by about 25%. Tesla sales also fell 30.5% in Denmark, 36% in the Netherlands, 19% in Spain and 67% in France, according to recent data. However, Norway stood out as an exception where Tesla sales soared 213% in May, thanks to the introduction of updated Model Y SUVs. Sales of both new and previous versions of the Model Y surged to 2,346 units from 690 in May 2024. Although the new Model Y is already available for order in many European markets, deliveries of the most affordable variant, historically Tesla's top seller, are only expected to begin this month in countries like Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Italy. As a result, the number of orders in May has yet to show up in sales data. To stimulate demand, TSLA has been offering various financial incentives in Sweden, Germany, Britain and France. It is also offering interest-free loans for the new Model Y in Norway. Tesla has been facing tough competition from local and Chinese auto makers in Europe. TSLA carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) at present. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here. In Europe, total sales of BYD Company Limited BYDDY, a Chinese EV maker, surged 359% year over year in April. BYD surpassed Teslain EV sales in Europe for the first time in April, overtaking the long-time market leader in the region. Per Jato Dynamics, BYD registered 7,231 new battery-electric vehicles in April, up 169% from the same time last year, earning it a spot among the top 10 EV brands in Europe. Tesla registered a drop of 49%, placing it one spot back. In April, Volkswagen AG VWAGY, a German auto manufacturer, gained 1.1% market share in Europe. It led the European EV market in April 2025. Volkswagen's subsidiaries, Skoda and Audi, also saw notable growth in the battery electric vehicle segment. The Skoda Elroq emerged as the top-selling all-electric model in Europe in April, validating the brand's strategy to introduce the SUV-sized Elroq in the niche between the B and C segments. The Elroq was followed by Volkswagen's ID3, ID7 and ID4 models. Tesla has underperformed the Zacks Automotive – Domestic industry and the Auto, Tires and Truck sector year to date. Tesla has lost 15.1% compared with the industry and sector's decline of 14.2% and 9.6%, respectively. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 and 2026 EPS has moved down 13 cents and 16 cents, respectively, in the past 30 days.
