S.C. Man, 80, Allegedly Murders 11-Year-Old Girl — Then Confesses that He Murdered His Wife as Well: Police
A South Carolina Man is accused of murdering his wife and then walking next door and murdering his neighbor's 11-year-old granddaughter.
The Sumter County Sheriff's office alleges that Arthur Leonard, 80, walked into his neighbors' house with an assault rifle on the night of April 16 and began firing at the 10 or 11 people inside the dwelling at that time.
Chief Deputy Hampton Gardner of the SCSO said at a news conference that an "11-year-old girl was shot and killed" in the gunfire.
The Sumter County Coroner's Office identified the young victim to PEOPLE as Ashly McFarland.
A GoFundMe set up for the family claims that the young girl's father was also shot while trying to take the shooter down after he opened fire.
Police were called to the house just before 11 p.m. in response to the incident and found family members holding Leonard back, according to the SCSO.
Life-saving measures were performed on the girl by emergency medical technicians, but she was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene, said Gardner.
Things took an unexpected turn when deputies brought Leonard in for booking and he allegedly informed them that he'd also murdered his wife, according to the SCSO.Deputies notified the Sumter Police Department, who went to perform a welfare check on Leonard's home and discovered his wife dead in their garage from an apparent gunshot wound.
The Sumter County Coroner's Office identified that victim as 76-year-old Felicia Leonard.
Gardner said at the press conference that there have been tensions between Leonard and the neighbors for some time because they often practice target shooting in their backyard, which is legal under state law.
Leonard had called the SCSO on numerous occasions to complain about his neighbors, said Deputy Gardner, and many of the deputies were familiar with him and the situation involving his neighbors.
The suspect was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries and the following day booked into the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
Court records show that deputies had arrested Leonard just two days before the shooting on a breach of peace count.
Leonard does not have a lawyer listed at this time.
Meanwhile, the Sumter School District release a statement about Ashly, writing in part: "She was a bright and joyful student who made a lasting impact on her classmates, teachers, and school community. Her passing is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."
Sheriff Anthony Dennis said that his investigators are "working diligently to uncover all the details," and said that the SCSO will share more information on this "horrific incident" once it becomes available.

Local bikers looking for answers from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office after one of their own was severely injured in a hit-and-run
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Family and friends say they want justice for 27-year-old Morgan Gray. Gray was injured in a hit-and-run on her motorcycle on May 28th. She's in critical condition here at Doctors Hospital. And her loved ones say someone needs to be held accountable. The accident occurred just before 9 pm at the intersection of Wheeler Road and Frontage Road. Since this incident, bikers have been coming and forming a prayer circle in front of her window at the Hospital. 'We're Morgan Strong all day,' said Dalton Taylor, a Friend of Morgan. 'This little girl shouldn't be going through this all because of a hit and run. So, it's just pretty much just trying to get peace, get justice.' Summer Ivey, Morgan's cousin, has been working to obtain information from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office about the investigation but told me she feels she is getting the bare minimum from them. 'We've asked for updates. We've called, no reply,' said Summer Ivey, Morgans's Cousin. 'We've posted on social media. We've been loud. We've been doing prayer circles, just trying to be there for her. Her son needs her; her family needs her. Her friends, obviously, and we're just steadily going to fight.' The Sheriff's Office located the vehicle and its owner. The vehicle was a company vehicle. They are collecting evidence about the driver but are unable to say anything at this time. 'We have our suspicions, but there's a protocol that we follow,' said Major Robbie Silas, Special Operations Richmond County Sheriff's Office. 'I have a great team that is working tirelessly, you know, around the clock, trying to find the driver of this vehicle. Again, like I said, we are collecting evidence. The vehicle has been processed, and once we get all that, and we'll run that to the DA's office and let them see all the stuff that we have, and then we'll make those charges.' While they continue to seek answers about what happened and who is responsible, they have this solution to keep drivers on both four- and two-wheels safe. 'Regardless of what the situation is. Friends, family of shooting victim speak out after murder charge dropped against Arizona man
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An Arizona man's murder charge was dropped after prosecutors claimed he acted in self-defense. However, several people, including the victim's business partner, disagree with the decision. Christopher Jetton, 52, was killed on May 19 in a rural area of Arizona, about 75 miles southeast of Las Vegas. 57-year-old man arrested in deadly shooting at remote Arizona property Jetton worked in Las Vegas, and across the state installing high-speed internet at state parks, and his death has devastated those closest to him. 'All of a sudden he's released. Self-defense, no charges. And we're just astonished because he walked in and just shot him,' Danny Bax, Jettons' friend, said. Bax worked with Jetton for the last seven years and developed a brotherhood as they crisscrossed Nevada from state park to state park installing Wi-Fi. 'Just days before he was killed, we just completed a 2,000-mile trip to nine of the Nevada State Parks to do upgrades. And one removal, so literally he just came back,' Bax said. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office stated in a press release that on May 19, Richard Stephen Hansen, 57, allegedly shot and killed Jetton inside a trailer. Both men lived on the same property in White Hills, Arizona, but in separate trailers. Bax said Jetton's wife was Hansen's ex-wife. The men began arguing after an unknown person drove onto the property, according to Mohave County deputies. Jetton allegedly punched Hanson. The argument reportedly escalated, Hansen went into his trailer with Jetton following him, grabbed a gun, and shot Jetton in the chest, according to MCSO. Bax said the death has devastated Jetton's wife Christina. 'She's broken. She is so broken, and so am I. So, I've lost my wife, I've now lost my best friend, and part of my business,' Bax said. In an email, the Mohave County Attorney's Office told 8 News Now it is no longer pursuing charges against Hansen because it doesn't have a 'reasonable likelihood of conviction' based on the evidence. The agency said it could re-open the case if prosecutors receive new or additional evidence. Bax started a GoFundMe page to help Jetton's wife during this time of need.
