Shell to invest RM9bil more in Malaysia over next few years

Shell's CEO Wael Sawan paid Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim a courtesy call in Putrajaya today. (X pic) PETALING JAYA : Global energy giant Shell has pledged to invest over RM9 billion in Malaysia over the next two to three years, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He said Shell's CEO Wael Sawan conveyed the commitment during a courtesy call today. 'This decision stands as a resounding vote of confidence from a world-class investor in our sound economic policies, clarity in our leadership, and promise in our future,' Anwar said in an X posting. During the courtesy call, Anwar said he shared the Malaysian government's strategic vision in positioning the country as a stable and sustainable investment destination. He said Sawan, in turn, expressed Shell's strong confidence in the country's direction, adding that Shell's upcoming investments would help create high-skilled job opportunities for Malaysians. 'Malaysia will continue to chart a course that is prosperous, resilient and worthy of its people's highest hopes,' Anwar added. Shell owns about 950 petrol stations in Malaysia, with only Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) operating a wider network. It also sells industrial lubricants and produces crude oil and natural gas off Sabah and Sarawak's shores. The company is also a joint venture partner in liquefied natural gas projects.

Malaysia to consider adopting nuclear energy to accelerate net-zero target 2050

Deputy Minister of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has to relook the whole energy triangle, including the possibility of adopting nuclear energy, in order to achieve its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, said Deputy Minister of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. "We need to maintain the affordability, the sustainability as well as the security of the supply. Where are we going to replace our base load? ".… so even nuclear is not considered as renewable energy, but it is considered as one of the clean sources of producing energy. So if you ask me, from my point of view, I think without nuclear, we may not achieve net zero (target) by 2050," he said. Akmal Nasrullah was a panelist in a dialogue session entitled 'Delivering Malaysia's Energy Transition' at the Energy Asia 2025 conference here today. He stressed that when the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) was launched in 2023, the interest was not only on the production or energy transition but the dynamics in terms of consumption have also changed. To recap, NETR aims to achieve 70 per cent renewable energy in the energy mix by 2050, where solar and hydro energies play the main role, while natural gases serve as the transition fuels. He said the government and public should embrace reality to adopt nuclear energy to help the country achieve its net zero mission. "So bear in mind, this (adopting nuclear energy) is something we have to really consider. "We do (have) our own planning, but hopefully when the government decides to go full-fledged for nuclear, not just the government, (but) the public will also be ready to face the reality that for us to achieve the net zero target by 2050, nuclear (energy) is the way to go," he said. - Bernama

Anwar praises EPF's efforts in enhancing retirement adequacy

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has commended the Employees Provident Fund's (EPF) efforts in exploring new approaches to enhance Malaysian retirement adequacy. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said he believes the involvement of the EPF and other government-linked investment companies (GLICs) signals a strong public-private partnership that will also enhance healthcare infrastructure, accessibility and quality, creating a system that can support all Malaysians. "We have to recognise and acknowledge that EPF has done remarkably well and they are continuing to explore new approaches to enhance retirement adequacy," he said during his opening address at the International Social Wellbeing Conference (ISWC) 2025 today. Anwar also highlighted that as people live longer, the focus must shift from lump-sum savings to sustainable retirement income. "We must also begin thinking about how to build a system that reflects greater solidarity, particularly for those with limited lifetime earnings. In our government's vision, no Malaysian should grow old in fear of poverty, fear of abandonment or fear of irrelevance," he added. The prime minister also highlighted that countries around the world are rethinking their labour and retirement policies in response to longer, healthier lifespans and evolving work preferences. "Many nations have begun adjusting retirement ages, balancing fiscal sustainability with individual desires for continued engagement - these reforms are accompanied by increased workplace flexibility and efforts to foster age-inclusive environments," he noted. According to Anwar, the country's economy is being reshaped by microentrepreneurs, gig workers and the self-employed, coming at a time when the labour market is undergoing structural shifts. He stressed that under the MADANI Economy, the government is committed to investing in digitalisation, inclusive innovation and small and medium enterprise (SME) growth. "Through programmes such as the SME Digitalisation Grant, the National Industry ESG Framework, and targeted support through Tekun and BSN, we are laying the groundwork for an inclusive, innovation-driven economy," he added. Also present were Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, EPF chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. The two-day ISWC 2025, themed "Living to a Hundred: Are We Prepared?", brings together more than 2,000 participants, 25 strategic partners and 24 distinguished speakers from across the globe. - Bernama
