India, Canada move to mend ties as Jaishankar speaks to Anita Anand
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar spoke with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand through a telephonic conversation for the first time and discussed strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
Anand made the announcement on Sunday on her social media account on X, thanking EAM Jaishankar for the "productive discussion" on Indo-Canadian ties.
"Thank you Minister @DrSJaishankar for the productive discussion today on strengthening Canada-India ties, deepening our economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities. I look forward to continuing our work together," she wrote on X.
Soon after, EAM Jaishankar confirmed the conversation with Anand on Sunday on his official X account, saying he discussed prospects of the relations between the two countries.
"Appreciate the telecon with FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada. Discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties. Wished her a very successful tenure," he wrote on X.
Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney is pushing for deepening economic cooperation with India.
Canada will be hosting the G7 Summit from June 15 to 17.
Indian-Canadian lawmaker Anita Anand, 58, was appointed as Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs earlier this month in a Cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney almost two weeks after his Liberal Party won the parliamentary elections.
On May 14, EAM Jaishankar congratulated Anand on her appointment as Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Anand was the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry before the Canada elections and in the past has served in several roles, including Defence Minister. She replaced Melanie Joly, who is now the Minister of Industry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had congratulated Carney on being elected as the Canadian Prime Minister after his predecessor Justin Trudeau stepped down from the role.
In his message, PM Modi had stressed strong people-to-people ties between the two countries while saying he was looking forward to "unlocking greater opportunities".
With Carney, it looks like India wants to turn a new leaf in bilateral ties that had nosedived under Trudeau amid unsubstantiated allegations against New Delhi related to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023.
Even during his campaign, the Canadian Prime Minister said rebuilding ties with India was a priority for his government, describing it as an "incredibly important relationship".
He had said Canadians have deep personal, economic and strategic ties with India.
Relations between India and Canada took a big hit in 2023 after Trudeau publicly accused India of being involved in the killing of Nijjar on Canadian soil, allegations that India described as "absurd" and "politically motivated".
Tensions escalated as Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, followed by a tit-for-tat move by India last year.
Both countries expelled top envoys, froze trade talks and suspended official visits.
India has accused Canada of tolerating extremism on its soil and failing to take action to curb attacks against its diplomats.

Actor Kamal Haasan has shared his response to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) after the film union body decided to ban the release of his film Thug Life in Karnataka amid the ongoing controversy around his "Kannada is born out of Tamil' remark. Haasan said his statement about the Kannada language at his film Thug Life audio launch in Chennai has been "misunderstood" as he claims to have spoken it "out of genuine affection" for the legendary actor Dr Rajkumar's family in Karnataka. I have always stood for the equal dignity of all Indian languages and remain opposed to the dominance of any one language over another, as such imbalance undermines the linguistic fabric of the Union of India." He further wrote that he only knows and speaks the "language of cinema" as he believes that it is a "universal language" which only knows the way of "love and bonding." Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court on May 3 began hearing petitions seeking direction to authorities, including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, not to take any measures—to restrain or refrain from screening and releasing Thug Life in Karnataka, which is scheduled for release on June 5.

E-passports for Indians: Do you need to replace current passport? Features, benefits explained
India has rolled out electronic passports for its citizens, a document that comes with enhanced data security. It combines both the paper and an electronic passport, and can be visually identified with a gold coloured symbol printed below the front cover. One of the distinguishing features of the ePassport is the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Chip which is embedded in the passport. This chip contains biometric details and personal information of the holder. How does the ePassport help? A major benefit is the added layer of security that the document provides. Personal information will be available in printed form on the booklet, along with being digitally signed in the chip. This can be securely authenticated by immigration officials across the world, which prevents fraudulent activities and safeguards passports from forgery. Do you have to replace existing passport? Indians with a valid passport do not have to replace it with an ePassport. All passports will continue to remain valid until the expiration date. However, after expiration, when applying for renewal, if the passport office is issuing ePassports, all citizens applying in that office will get it. The phase wise roll out of ePassport, covering all Passport Offices across India, may take a few months, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs. How to apply for a new passport or renewal? Go to India's Passport Seva website, and under services, click on apply for fresh/re-issue passport. If you do not have an account, register a new one. Select your Regional Passport office based on your current location, which will then decide the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) you need to visit. Fill up personal details, and ensure they are accurate before submitting the application, as changes can not be made later. After submission, a unique Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated. Pay and schedule your appointment. Select your preferred PSK. After the appointment is confirmed, you will receive an SMS confirmation. Carry all essential documents when visiting the PSK. In case of minor applicants (below 4 years of age), also carry a recent passport size photograph (4.5 X 3.5 cm) with white background. Only the passport offices that are technically enabled for ePassports will issue them; others will continue issuing the normal passport until nationwide rollout of the electronic document is complete. Local firms drive new growth phase in Nigeria's oil sector
LAGOS - Nigeria is witnessing a significant shift in its oil and gas landscape as local companies expand their roles, driving a new phase of potential sectoral growth and innovation. Leading the charge are companies which bought onshore and shallow water assets from oil majors planning billions of dollars of investments to develop abandoned fields. Smaller producers are also pulling their weight, for example Nigeria's first locally developed and operated onshore crude terminal, Otakikpo, began loading operations on Monday. Built by Green Energy Limited and located in the OML 11 block near Port Harcourt, it marks a milestone in local capacity. Shell loaded the first crude cargo through the 360,000 bpd capacity terminal on Monday, opening up potential drilling prospects for over 40 stranded fields in the region. Similarly, Conoil Producing Limited recently shipped the first cargo of its new Obodo crude blend from the onshore OML 150 in the Niger Delta. The cargo was lifted by Oando Trading, a subsidiary of Oando Plc which bought ENI's divested assets. Following this trend, Renaissance Africa Energy — after acquiring Shell's onshore assets — is committing to investing $15 billion over the next five years in its oil and gas operations. The company aims not only to balance its portfolio by increasing crude oil production but also to double its gas output once a key local gas pipeline is completed. Similarly, Seplat Energy, following its acquisition of ExxonMobil's Nigerian shallow-water assets, recently announced plans to reopen 400 previously shut-in wells. CEO Roger Brown said the company is set to invest up to $320 million this year in drilling campaigns and infrastructure, with the goal of boosting crude production to around 140,000 barrels per day. "We are focused on reviving existing wells, expanding drilling campaigns, and increasing gas volumes," Brown said during the company's annual general meeting. While these developments show the increasing role local producers are playing amidst government reforms, they are also grappling with challenges. "These operators face higher costs due to security challenges, community disputes, oil theft and ageing infrastructure – a key aspect of reducing costs for operators will be addressing these challenges," said Mikolah Judson, an analyst at global risk consultancy, Control Risk. These local players, signal a new phase for Nigeria's oil and gas sector and could provide support for the government's plan to raise oil output by additional 1 million barrels per day (bpd) next year, head of Nigeria's oil regulator said. They now account for over half of Nigeria's oil production from around 40% before the oil majors completed their divestment programmes according to the regulator's data.
