Pune Municipal Corporation's plan to generate power from waste remains on paper
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation's plan to revive the project to generate electricity from garbage has not made any headway in the last two years, despite a provision in the civic budget for 2025-26.
Now, the deadline to set up a plant at Ramtekdi, which will have a capacity to handle 350 tonnes of waste a day, has extended by four months from the scheduled period of Dec 2025.
Officials said the administration considered various factors such as time to import equipment and machinery for the facility, and procedural delays for the extension of the deadline.
"Most of the civil works have been completed. The administration is hoping to generate energy from April 2026," said Sandip Kadam, head of PMC's solid waste management department.
Residents, however, said the civic body should focus on dealing with the basic problems of garbage collection and processing.
"Piles of trash lying unattended can be seen across locations as a result of open dumping. Instead of wasting money on unsuccessful projects, more vehicles should be purchased to lift and dispose of the trash," said Ameya Nipankar of Kothrud.
Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizens' group, said the corporation has not been able to produce power from waste.

"Many attempts were made, but none of them proved successful. Even then, some officials are adamant on starting new projects on similar lines. It is a waste of public money."
More than a decade ago, PMC announced with much fanfare its plan to set up two plants of 500 tonnes and 250 tonnes capacity at Uruli Devachi. But after these faced opposition from local residents, the civic body scrapped the idea and declared two years ago that it would establish a plant at Ramtekdi.
As per available data, the city generates around 2,300 metric tonnes of garbage every day. More than 350 vehicles are deployed for collecting and transporting waste.
Civic officials said they also hope to get financial aid from Centre. Union govt provides central financial assistance to project developers and service charges to implementing/inspection agencies in respect of successful commissioning of waste to energy plants for generation of biogas, bio-CNG/enriched biogas/compressed biogas, and power/generation of syngas.

Majhi, based on intelligence reports, went to inspect sand being lifted illegally using excavators. When he opposed it, he was attacked. Police said the miscreants, mostly goons of the sand mafia, intercepted Majhi's car and tried to stop him from venturing into the sand lifting site in the river bed. Pujari announced free sand provision for Pradhan Mantri Awas beneficiaries, with a draft standard operating procedure (SOP) already in preparation to streamline the process. "The most important thing is how to facilitate the supply of sand at low cost to the lower middle class and poor. We will introduce the provision of issuing permits to beneficiaries of PM Awas to lift at least two tractor fulls of sand for free for construction of houses. The PM Awas will be free from the sand cost burden," Pujari told reporters. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty commented that the minister's statements are merely an attempt to whitewash the obvious collusion between administration officials and the mining mafia. "Instead of taking concrete action, the minister has limited himself to making empty rhetoric," he said. Mohanty said there has been a drastic decline in revenue from minor minerals from Rs 1,485 crore in 2023-24 to just Rs 600 crore in 2024-25.

‘Save Powai Lake' human chain plan off over BMC fee
Mumbai: A silent "Save Powai Lake" human chain scheduled for Sunday by local residents and nature lovers was cancelled after the BMC demanded a nominal "event fee" of Rs 11,000 to organise it at the lakeside. Green activists alleged they tried in vain to explain to civic officials that this was not an event but a public expression of concern to save the lake from pollution and floating weeds such as hyacinths. The human chain was planned for Sunday, June 8, to focus on the need to conserve Powai Lake as part of Mumbai region's biodiversity, said the activists. "For about a week the BMC was making us go round in circles for a simple no-objection certificate for the human chain after we obtained the police nod," said Pamela Cheema, chairperson of the advanced locality management committee (ALMC). Police suggested that the organisers seek the BMC's approval as well. Cheema said, "Despite the police forwarding them our request and we ourselves presenting the BMC's S ward office our request, the officials were searching for the documents till Friday." The BMC insisted on payment of "a nominal fee of Rs 11,000" for using the Powai Lake premises, she said. "It has been a sad day for our environment, but we haven't lost hope. We will come back stronger," she said.

Patna: Muslims across the city gathered on Saturday at various mosques and Eidgah in the morning, including Gandhi Maidan, to offer 'namaz' (prayers) on Eid-ul-Adha (Bakrid).
