SC Freiburg 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen

SC Freiburg 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen

Yahoo04-05-2025

Freiburg had the chance to not only increase their chances of qualifying for the Champions League this season, but they could also be kingmakers and crown Bayern Munich champions, if they beat Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen knew what the task was: play so badly that Bayern would win the title today and become 'Sofameister'. Freiburg were simply the better side for very much of the first 45 minutes of the game, despite dominating the ball, die Werkself were unable to do anything reasonable with it. Freiburg thoroughly outworked them the whole game and hustled in defence to stifle Leverkusen. Just before half-time, Maximilian Eggestein's long-range effort beat Matej Kovar to give Freiburg the lead.

The hosts would double their lead within three minutes of the second half when Piero Hincapié prodded a Johan Manzambi cut back into his own net. It had seemed that Freiburg were going to see out the win and take a big leap towards Champions League qualification, as they continued to outwork Leverkusen and held them at bay for very much of the game. However, as we have seen for parts of this season, the old Leverkusen reared its head. Florian Wirtz's curling effort from outside the box beat Florian Müller to set up a tense finale.
Then it happened. Again.
In the 94th minute, a Nathan Tella cross was met by the shoulder of Jonathan Tah to make it 2-2. The draw still confirmed Bayern as champions, but we will all likely forget this by next week.
Did Leverkusen deserve this result? no. They stunk the place out for most of the game with how they played, once again showing that this squad needs a refresh.

The late equaliser makes Freiburg's qualification for the Champions League slightly more difficult. In their final two games of the season, they face Holstein Kiel, who are trying to attempt a great escape (to the relegation playoff) and Frankfurt on the final day of the season. Granted, they are still in the top four and in a favourable position, but they will need to be perfect to realise the UCL dream, especially after throwing it away in 2022.
As previously pointed out by the Gegenpressing Podcast, Freiburg have the potential to be a strong team in Germany and qualification for Europe's premier competition would allow the Breisgau to take the next step as a club, similar to Eintracht Frankfurt in the past couple of leagues.

Bayer Leverkusen:
Matej Kovar (5), Edmond Tapsoba (5), Jonathan Tah (5), Piero Hincapié (4), Jeremie Frimpong (5), Granit Xhaka (5), Aleix Garcia (5), Alejandro Grimaldo (6), Emiliano Buendia (4), Florian Wirtz (6), Patrik Schick (4)

GGFN Man of the Match: Johan Manzambi (7)
Considering Manzambi has only broken into the Freiburg in recent weeks. He has impressed in most of his starts, and today was no different. He ran until he couldn't run anymore this afternoon. The 19-year-old also (technically) provided the assist for the own goal scored by Piero Hincapié.

The great thing about Freiburg is that they are seemingly able to just find a replacement for a long-serving player out of nowhere, and Manzambi seems to be the next replacement for Lucas Höler.

Flekken joins Leverkusen as Kelleher replaces him at Brentford

Then Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken gestures during the German Bundesliga soccer match between SC Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen at Europa-Park Stadion. Goalkeeper Mark Flekken has returned to the Bundesliga and joined Bayer Leverkusen from Brentford, who in turn have signed Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher to replace him. Tom Weller/dpa Goalkeeper Mark Flekken has returned to the Bundesliga and joined Bayer Leverkusen from Brentford, who in turn have signed Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher to replace him. Leverkusen announced in a statement on Tuesday that the Netherlands goalkeeper, who was previously at Freiburg, has signed a contract until 2028. Advertisement The 31-year-old has played for Brentford in the English Premier League for the past two seasons. Media reports estimated the transfer at €10 million ($11.4 million). "He knows the Bundesliga from his successful time in Freiburg. His years in England and his role in the Dutch national team have also given Mark a great deal of international experience. We are therefore very well positioned in the goalkeeper positions for the coming years," Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said. Flekken is expected to become the new number one for the 2024 German champions, who are now coached by another Dutchman in Erik ten Hag. Last season, Lukas Hradecky and Matej Kovar shared the role, but Kovar in particular struggled as Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga. Advertisement Brentford immediately replaced Flekken with Ireland goalkeeper Kelleher from Liverpool for £18 million ($25.5 million). A statement said the Premier League champion had penned a five-year deal. Kelleher was playing second fiddle to Alisson Becker at Liverpool and the July arrival of Valencia's Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili at Anfield was set to limit his chances further. "I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a number one and to play every week," he said.

Inzaghi leaves Inter after Champions League debacle

Simone Inzaghi has left as coach of Inter Milan following their 5-0 record defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final. Inter, who won Serie A last season, also saw Napoli steal their domestic crown. Advertisement A club statement on Tuesday said the decision was mutual. "The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year-long journey, throughout which I gave my all," Inzaghi said. "Every day, my first and last thought was always about Inter. It was then reciprocated with professionalism and passion by the players, leaders, and every single one of the club's employees." The 49-year-old also led Inter to the 2023 Champions League final but they again lost to Manchester City, albeit only by a 1-0 scoreline. Inzaghi has been linked in the media with a huge three-year deal at Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. He could take over before the Club World Cup in the United States starts on June 14. They face Real Madrid in their opener on June 18. Advertisement Inter are also in the revamped tournament and must find a new coach before their first group game against Monterrey on June 17. Como's Spanish boss Cesc Fàbregas, who had been linked with RB Leipzig, is seen by Italian media as the favourite to take over at the Nerazzurri.

Doue lauds ‘really good human being' Enrique after PSG win Champions League

PSG's wonderkid Desire Doue hailed his manager Luis Enrique after scoring twice to help his side win the Champions League. The French champions thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich to win the club's first ever Champions League title. Advertisement PSG got off to the perfect start when Achraf Hakimi slotted in from close range on just 12 minutes. Doue then grabbed his first and his side's second with a deflected strike which beat Yann Sommer, before adding his second just after the hour mark to make it 3-0. Khvicha Kvaratskheklia and youngster Senny Mayulu then added one each to round off a brutal beating for Inter. Doue has enjoyed a fantastic debut season at the club after signing from Rennes last summer, scoring 15 times in all competitions. And the 19-year-old credited his manager Enrique for helping him to settle so quickly. 'He's been here two years and he's made history for the club,' Doue told TNT Sports. Advertisement 'Tactically, mentally, he's a really good coach and not just as a coach, as a human being too. 'It's a pleasure to work with him. 'It's just incredible for me. I have no words.' PSG have long been contenders in the Champions League knockout stages, and finished as runners up back in 2020 when they were beaten by Bayern Munich in the final. Having seen superstars like Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe come and go without winning the competition, however, PSG midfielder Vitinha says it shows just how good this current team is. 'It means everything,' Vitinha said. 'The fans are the main reason we wanted to win this trophy. Advertisement 'But we wanted to win this trophy for a lot of reasons. It's our dream, it's everyone's dream, it's my dream and I'm glad we made it. It's incredible. 'It says a lot about this group of players, this team. It's a very good team and this result is not by magic. We are a very good team and we are very happy we did it like this and now we're going to celebrate.'
