Mbappe maintains Real Madrid Liga dream in Celta thriller

Kylian Mbappe struck twice as Real Madrid held off Celta Vigo with a thrilling 3-2 win to stay within sight of La Liga leaders Barcelona on Sunday.
After the Catalans scraped a comeback win at Valladolid on Saturday, Madrid survived a late Celta fightback to maintain the four-point gap ahead of next Sunday's Clasico.
Defending champions Madrid, second, took a three-goal lead but were left clinging on at the Santiago Bernabeu against a Celta side seventh and hoping to qualify for European football next season.
"The game seemed finished... you have to remember we're without six defenders and we're not always capable of solving these things," said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.
"Yes it could have been dealt with better, we suffered a bit, but it's a nice victory."
Madrid's Champions League defense crumbled and Los Blancos were also beaten in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona last week, but Los Blancos are still hopeful of overhauling Hansi Flick's side in La Liga.
"We had a very good first half (but)... we fell apart, these things can't happen, it's happened to us a lot," admitted Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde on the club's television channel.
"We left a lot minutes for them to get comfortable and they are a great team and they put us in a tough spot."
Ancelotti's side came into the game with a spate of defensive injuries but after riding out an early wave of Celta chances took control, with Turkish 20-year-old Arda Guler pulling the strings.
With Rodrygo Goes out with illness the youngster started in his stead and took full advantage.
Guler directed a spectacular overhead effort wide of goal in the opening stages, showing his ambition has no limits.
Former Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso headed just over and then forced a fine save from Thibaut Courtois, as Celta threatened.
Aurelien Tchouameni headed over when well-placed at the other end, as Madrid stifled the visitors.
- 'Last chance' -
Madrid opened the scoring through Guler after 33 minutes, when the playmaker cleverly worked some space in the box and then brilliantly curled a strike past the reach of Vicente Guaita.
Mbappe doubled Madrid's lead after 39 minutes at the sharp end of a rapid breakaway.
Courtois saved well from Borja Iglesias and immediately Madrid thrust forward, with Bellingham setting Mbappe free down the right.
The French superstar ruthlessly lashed past Guaita from just inside the area.
Just three minutes into the second half, Mbappe struck again for his 24th league goal of the season, putting him one behind the top scorer, Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski.
Guler was the creator, playing in the striker with a perfectly-weighted ball and Mbappe finished low with a stroke of his left boot.
It seemed the game was won for Madrid but Javier Rodriguez pulled Celta back into it with a finish from close range after a corner was wrongly awarded to Celta.
Lucas Vazquez blocked Pablo Duran's backheeled effort on the line but Rodriguez was on hand to pounce.
Iago Aspas' introduction off the bench for the Galicians immediately gave them more attacking impetus and he produced a superb pass for Williot Swedberg to slot a second past Courtois.
The Belgian goalkeeper had his heart in his mouth a few minutes later as Duran's shot slipped out of his hands and could have squirmed across the line behind him if it had not slowed to a stop on the grass.
If Madrid had dropped points it would have allowed Barcelona to lift the title next weekend with a Clasico victory.
"It's the game of the year for us, the last chance for us to win La Liga," said Valverde.
"We will try our best to take the three points."
Elsewhere Real Betis kept the pressure on Villarreal in the race for the fifth Champions League qualifying spot.
Betis, sixth, snatched a 2-1 victory at Espanyol with two late goals, including Antony's 91st-minute sweetly-struck winner to move a point behind the Yellow Submarine.
Athletic Bilbao, fourth, shared a goalless draw with Real Sociedad in a Basque derby clash.

Football law on penalty kicks updated after Champions League incident helped oust Atletico

by Naharnet Newsdesk 03 June 2025, 16:17 The laws of football on taking a penalty kick were clarified on Tuesday after Julián Álvarez's accidental double touch helped to eliminate Atletico Madrid from the Champions League. The update published by FIFA-backed rules panel IFAB means the kind of penalty Átletico forward Álvarez had disallowed after scoring in a shootout against Real Madrid in March should now be retaken. Álvarez slipped and kicked the ball against his standing left foot in the shootout in the Champions League round of 16. After the looping ball beat Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for an apparent score, the goal was ruled out by a video review and Atletico ultimately lost the shootout. The laws of football relating to the penalty kick and penalty shootout were seen as correctly applied in Madrid in March though too vaguely worded. The incident was widely judged to have been unfair as Álvarez did not deliberately slip and take the double touch to gain an advantage. "This situation is rare, and as it is not directly covered in Law 14, referees have understandably tended to penalize the kicker," IFAB said in a statement. "However, this part of Law 14 is primarily intended for situations where the penalty taker deliberately touches the ball a second time before it has touched another player." IFAB clarified in a circular letter to football stakeholders that a penalty kick which is scored now after an accidental double touch should be retaken. A double-touch penalty that is not scored will not be retaken. In a shootout, such a penalty "is recorded as missed," IFAB said, and during regulation time or extra time a free kick can be awarded to the defending team. The clarified rule will apply at the Club World Cup which starts on June 14 in the United States. The 32-team lineup includes Atletico. IFAB is comprised of FIFA plus the four British football federations. Rules can be changed with six of the eight votes which are distributed by four to FIFA and one each to the British.

79 detained as more violence disrupts PSG's Champions League celebrations

by Naharnet Newsdesk 02 June 2025, 17:04 French authorities detained an additional 79 people as violence continued to disrupt PSG's celebrations of its historic Champions League title, the Paris police chief said on Monday. After more than 100,000 people welcomed the return of PSG players to the French capital following their 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday, a second night of scattered incidents ensued. Laurent Nunez, the Paris police prefect, told RTL radio that groups of individuals gathered close to PSG stadium and on the Champs-Elysees avenue after midnight, causing trouble. Nunez said some using barriers blocked the main ring road surrounding Paris for a while, and that other troublemakers set off fireworks and tried to vandalize shops. Nunez said calm was restored at 3:30 a.m. on Monday. PSG had earlier put on an open-top bus parade in the city for its fans. The winners of European club soccer's biggest prize arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon and headed to France's most famous avenue, the Champs-Élysées, which overnight Saturday saw acts of violence and clashes with riot police. Police had made more than 500 arrests across France on Saturday night. "The overall number of arrests is very high, it is completely unprecedented," Nunez said. Celebrations were largely peaceful but degenerated into violence in some areas. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the western city of Dax during a PSG street party after the final, the national police service said. In Paris, a man in his 20s was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations.
