Charges: October killing on St. Paul street was robbery gone wrong
ST. PAUL, Minn. — A St. Paul man has been charged with murder in an October killing authorities say occurred during a drug-related robbery attempt.
The 20-year-old faces two counts of second-degree murder, court documents filed in Ramsey County earlier this month show. The St. Paul Police Department identified the victim as 42-year-old Nicholas Sletten of Little Canada.
Sletten was found shot at the intersection of Jackson Street and Wheelock Parkway on Oct. 14, near a vehicle with all of its doors open, according to a criminal complaint. Sletten was taken to Regions Hospital, where he died.
Multiple 911 callers reported seeing people run from the vehicle, and a witness told police they thought the shooting happened inside the car.
Investigators identified and spoke to two people who were in Sletten's vehicle when the shooting occurred. Both of them identified the 20-year-old as the shooter, and his fingerprints were found on Sletten's car. The two men said the 20-year-old was sitting behind Sletten in the vehicle and reached into the front seat to shoot him with an "AK-47 style gun," according to the complaint. Another man in the car also had a gun and participated in the robbery attempt, one of the men who spoke to police said.
After the shooting, the 20-year-old and three other men in the vehicle fled to one of their houses, where the alleged shooter cleaned his gun with bleach, the complaint states.
One of the men who spoke to police said he thought the 20-year-old was after "pills or weed," according to the complaint. Two of Sletten's relatives told investigators he grew and sold marijuana, the complaint states.
The 20-year-old was charged by warrant.
Sletten's killing was one of three homicides in a four-day span in the capital city.
"This violence must stop," Police Chief Axel Henry said at the time. "Solving these murders is not and is never going to be the answer. We have to prevent them from happening in the first place."

Lacy Lakeview adopts ‘CodeRED' system
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – The City of Lacy Lakeview has instituted a program called 'CodeRED.' This is an emergency notification system that helps police and fire departments easily alert people in the city. In the past, alerts would be posted to the Police Department's website and Facebook, where people would have to go out of their way to find the alert. CodeRED brings the alert to the public as a mobile notification – whether enlistees choose to receive them in email, text, or call format. The system can also help connect the community with the Police and Fire Department if there is a crime in the area, warning people to be on the lookout and making it easier for those with information to communicate with law enforcement. 'It does help significantly our dispatchers,' City of Lacy Lakeview Detective Tyler Ziegler said. 'Not only do they dispatch for police and fire and EMS here in the area, but they can also be taking phone calls after hours for City Hall if they're closed, and there's not a water person who is available to answer.' CodeRED also helps dispatchers when they receive calls from people needing alert clarification – taking up time that could be spent on the phone with someone in an emergency. 2 found guilty in 10-year-old girl's Fourth of July shooting death in Cleveland
[Attached video: Previous FOX 8 coverage] CLEVELAND (WJW) — It's been nearly one year since a 10-year-old girl was shot and killed while celebrating the Fourth of July holiday at a family gathering in Cleveland. Wednesday, two men charged in her death, Juwone Deaver and Jemerious Davis, were both found guilty of murder. Young mother killed in shooting at Cleveland Metroparks Mill Creek Falls On the evening of July 4, 2024, friends and family had gathered at a home at West 125th Street and Triskett Road. As FOX 8 News has previously reported, 10-year-old Gracie Griffin was standing outside the residence along with Deaver, Davis and Katie McKnight. According to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley, a vehicle with four people inside drove to the house for the party. The vehicle drove past the house, turned around and pulled in front of the home. 'Deaver and Davis then opened fire shooting multiple times with a .45 caliber firearm and an AK-style firearm at the vehicle,' a Wednesday news release from O'Malley's office stated. Gracie Griffin was struck in the head during the shooting and pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators determined that no shots were fired from the vehicle. There was 'only evidence of outgoing fire from the residence.' Retired Cleveland police officer killed in fire 'An innocent 10-year-old girl lost her life because too many guns are finding their way into the hands of stupid people,' O'Malley was quoted in the news release. 'While this verdict does not bring back Gracie, it is a significant step in justice for her. My thoughts and prayers remain with her family.'
