Mano Maniam , star of stage and screen, died last night at age 79. As news broke of his passing, members of the performing arts community have come out to pay tribute to a treasured performer.
Faridah Merican, the First Lady of Malaysian theatre, recalled their very first play together back in the 1970s.
'It was called 'He Who Gets Slapped', directed by Joy Zinoman. Mano played my father, and he gave his all, as he did with every role,' she told FMT Lifestyle.
'I worked with Mano for over a lifetime. He touched many lives with his roles in theatre. We were just talking about having a theatre show for seniors, and it is a pity we won't get to do it.
'The Malaysian arts scene will miss a great performer. May he rest in peace.'

Theatre director and artistic director of The Actors Studio Joe Hasham, added: 'Mano was an amazing actor, and a wonderful human being. He lived a full and wonderful life, which we should celebrate.'
Actor, comedian and musician Douglas Lim, who co-starred with Mano in the sitcom 'Kopitiam', considered Mano one of his primary mentors when he started doing television work 30 years ago.
'Mano was always passionate about the arts and the environment,' Lim said. 'In my eyes, he will always be the free-spirited, adventure-loving, caring and generous Uncle Mano.'
Sabera Shaik, executive producer of Masakini Theatre, said Mano was a long-time friend with whom she had countless hour-long phone conversations.

'He was and will always be cherished as a formidable director, and actor who did Shakespeare proud. But Mano was not only an actor, he was an intrepid traveller who enjoyed exploring the world, discovering geographical marvels and meeting people.
'Above all, he was a wonderful friend who loved to laugh at himself, and laughed with you and never at you.'
Actor Colin Kirton, who worked with Mano in 'Natra: The Musical' (2004) and a staged reading of theatrethreesixty's 'Death of a Salesman' in 2016, will always remember Mano's humility.
'In spite of his accolades and how highly he was viewed in the arts scene, what stands out to me was his character. He was the most humble, down-to-earth man – a true gentleman.'

Toddler dies after MPV rams car from behind

Dashcam images from a viral video showing the MPV approaching from behind and ramming the car. PETALING JAYA : A two-year-old girl died from her injuries after the car she was in was rammed from behind by a Toyota Alphard on the North-South Expressway near Muar, Johor, on Monday. Berita Harian reported that Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddin died on Wednesday morning after spending two days in intensive care fighting for her life. The toddler was with her family of four in a Proton Saga, which was on the left lane of the highway. A viral video of the dashcam footage showed the Alphard ramming into the car from behind. Muar police chief Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz confirmed that one of the passengers in the Saga had died in the crash which happened around 7.30am on May 26. 'The multipurpose vehicle (MPV) involved is believed to have lost control before crashing into the back of the car. This caused the car to lose control and skid before crashing into the road divider,' he said in a statement. Raiz said the driver and other two passengers in the Saga also sustained injuries. A breathalyser test cleared the driver of the Alphard from being under the influence of alcohol or any banned substance. He appealed for witnesses to come forward and assist in investigations.

Nurul Izzah mooted 2nd deputy president's post, says Rafizi

Nurul Izzah Anwar had made the offer three days before PKR delegates cast their votes in the central leadership elections, said Rafizi Ramli. AMPANG JAYA : Rafizi Ramli who was defeated at the PKR elections last month, says Nurul Izzah Anwar had previously suggested the creation of an appointed post of PKR deputy president for Rafizi to fill. Rafizi said the offer, which he rejected, was made by Nurul Izzah at a meeting three days before PKR delegates cast their ballots in the party's central leadership elections. 'When she met me, she tried to propose having an appointed deputy president – me. But even if it were to be an appointed party president, I'm not interested, all the more other party posts,' he said today. 'Because this isn't a question of posts but the message we want to convey,' he said when met at an event organised by his Pandan parliamentary office here today. Rafizi failed to secure re-election as deputy president last month, losing to Nurul Izzah who received 9,803 votes to his 3,866 votes. He subsequently offered his resignation from his Cabinet post as economy minister. He said today that he will resume his duties as a normal MP and the head of the party's Pandan division. He is on leave from his official duties while his resignation is effective June 17. Rafizi had previously revealed that he had rejected a last-ditch appeal from Nurul Izzah to help her after the party polls ended. Rafizi said he believed that her plea stemmed from concerns over the new leadership lineup, which she feared would bring trouble for Anwar Ibrahim and PKR.
