Norwich Police investigate swastika graffiti with 'TRUMP' on Route 82

Yahoo22-02-2025

Norwich — Police are investigating a report of swastikas painted on Route 82-Salem Turnpike and on banners hung from the I-395 highway overpass at Exit 11 overnight or early Friday morning.
Crews from the state Department of Transportation and the city Public Works Department removed the hanging items and painted over the graffiti Friday morning.
A large swastika was painted in black with the word 'TRUMP' in white block letters under it on Old Salem Turnpike at the intersection with Route 82. Photos were posted on social media of the image, and a concerned citizen sent a photo to Public Works Director Brian Long early Friday morning.
Police Lt. Kyle Besse said police received numerous calls starting at 6:40 a.m. reporting the graffiti and banners. Calls also came from people traveling to work and to the nearby Thomas Mahan School.
Besse said police continued to receive calls hours after the images were removed or covered, because of social media posts.
Police are investigating and are reviewing security video footage from nearby businesses, Besse said. No arrests were announced by late Friday afternoon.
Long said a city crew painted over the image on Old Salem Turnpike Friday morning, as the quickest way to erase the image.
'We want to assure the public that the Norwich Police Department is diligently investigating this matter,' police said in a news release. 'Our officers are working swiftly to gather all available evidence, and we are committed to identifying those responsible for this criminal act.'
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Norwich Police Department at (860) 886-5561.
The Beth Jacob Synagogue and offices for the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut are located nearby on New London Turnpike.
Rabbi Julius Rabinowitz said Friday that the swastika continues to be 'a symbol of hate, a symbol of Nazis, a symbol of Hitler,' to Jewish people. But he said from what he has learned of the incident in Norwich Friday, the images with Trump's name associated with them could be aimed at the president and not a threat to the synagogue.
He said he will trust local police to conduct a thorough investigation and assessment of the situation.

Is 4,700 federal troops a big deployment?

About 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines have been sent to Los Angeles as of Tuesday morning, after President Trump bypassed California leaders who said federal forces were not needed to respond to mostly peaceful protests. Here's how the deployment compares to past military activations on domestic soil responding to social unrest. 2021: Attack on the Capitol In 2021, officials in Washington initially requested 340 National Guard members to help respond to planned protests on Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, according to the military. As the protests on Jan. 6 against the 2020 presidential election results deteriorated, with a violent mob attacking police officers and the Capitol, the mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, requested assistance, and 1,100 D.C. National Guard members were sent. Later that night, the acting defense secretary at the time, Chris Miller, mobilized 6,200 more National Guard members from other states to ensure peace in the days leading up to former President Joseph R. Biden's inauguration. 2020: George Floyd Protests After protests sprung up around the United States in response to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, National Guard members were deployed to several states. As of June 3, 2020, the National Guard had deployed more than 18,000 members in 28 states to respond to civil unrest related to Mr. Floyd's murder at the request of the states' governors. Another 42,000 National Guard members were activated at the same time for the coronavirus pandemic response. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Colombian authorities charge 15-year-old with attempted murder of presidential candidate

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombian authorities on Tuesday charged a 15-year-old with attempted murder for the assasination attempt on Miguel Uribe, the conservative presidential candidate who was shot in the head this weekend and is now in critical condition. The Attorney General's office said the teenager shot at Uribe during a rally in Bogota's Modelia neighborhood and was captured fleeing the scene with a gun. The teenager, whose name has not been released, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is currently recovering in a hospital from leg wounds. Colombia's Defense Minister said on Tuesday that authorities are still investigating who may have been behind the attack on Uribe, a 39-year-old senator and one of the nation's most visible opposition figures . Armed groups in Colombia frequently recruit minors for assassinations and other crimes, a practice driven by the lenient penalties they face under Colombian law. The teenager charged with attempted murder on Tuesday faces up to eight years in detention. A judge has ordered his detention at a juvenile center once he leaves hospital. The attack on Uribe has been widely condemned in Colombia, where many voters are concerned about the country's deteriorating security situation. Uribe, whose maternal grandfather was a Colombian president, is the son of Diana Turbay, a prominent news anchor who was assassinated in 1991 after being kidnapped by the powerful Medellin Cartel. Colombian opposition parties have asked for greater security guarantees in the wake of the attack, with some also urging President Gustavo Petro to moderate his rhetoric, as the nation prepares for presidential elections next year. While Petro condemned the attack on Uribe, he often refers to opposition leaders in his speeches and social media posts as 'Nazis' 'oligarchs' and 'enemies of the people.' On Tuesday, Uribe's wife María Claudia Tarazona addressed journalists outside the hospital where the senator is being treated, calling for unity and calm. 'I call on every sector, on all the political groups, on armed groups and on every corner of this country to heal,' she said, adding that Uribe 'is a warrior who is fighting for his life.' ____ Follow AP's coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at Error! Newsom Warns Trump May Use Soldiers on Immigration Raids

Gavin Newsom is warning that Donald Trump's use of troops where state and local officials don't want them is actually a test, one the Republican president may seek to replicate across other American towns and cities as part of his mass deportation effort. 'We're getting word that he's looking to operationalize that relationship and advance significantly larger-scale ICE operations in partnership and collaboration with the National Guard,' the Democratic governor said on the podcast Pod Save America. Such a move would likely be illegal for reasons similar to those Newsom has cited in litigation to stop Trump's use of the military in Los Angeles. Legal experts have said that, as with many of Trump's emergency declarations since he took office, there is no legal basis for the Republican's move to take control of the California National Guard. State and city officials have reported that protests against Trump and his immigration raids have been largely peaceful during the day with minor skirmishes at night, while limited to a few parts of a city that spreads over several hundred square miles. With no reported deaths and few injuries—some among journalists shot with plastic rounds by local police —protests have begun spreading across the country. Demonstrations have been held in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Texas and Washington. Meanwhile, Trump's federalization of 4,000 members of California National Guard and his ordering of 700 active duty Marines to Los Angeles will reportedly cost $134 million for 60 days.
