Rugged Acerbi, the symbol of Inter's bid to make history

MILAN: Francesco Acerbi could crown his long, turbulent career with the biggest prize in club football after bouncing back from cancer, depression and alcoholism to play a key part in Inter Milan's charge to the Champions League final.
The Italy international's stoppage-time equalizer was probably the defining moment in Inter's barely believable semi-final triumph over Barcelona, as the oldest player in an old team.
A 37-year-old center-back, Acerbi had to be the most surprising goalscorer in a tie for the ages, finding himself in the opposition penalty area to smash in his first ever Champions League goal just as the game looked up for Inter. Everything about his goal embodied the fighting spirit Inter have shown in their two classic wins over Barca and, in the previous round, Bayern Munich.
Acerbi hammered home Denzel Dumfries' low cross with his unfavored right foot which was wearing a boot with a hole in it, before stripping off to reveal a rangy body covered with tattoos. The somewhat rustic image contrasted with slick, youthful Barca led by teenage phenomenon Lamine Yamal.
"It was a really special moment. I could feel that something changed when the ball hit the net," said Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu on Monday. "It was the moment that we realised that we could win the match."
Despite his age, Acerbi is Simone Inzaghi's first choice in the heart of Inter's three-man central defense and will start against paris Saint-Germain in Munich on Saturday. Acerbi has come through some tough times both on the field and off it, battling depression following the death of his father while he was briefly at AC Milan over a decade ago, and then two bouts of testicular cancer which he believes were the catalyst for him to turn his life around.
'Rock bottom'
"After my dad died I crashed and hit rock bottom. I was at Milan and nothing stimulated me. I didn't even know how to play anymore," he said in 2019. "I started drinking, I drank everything. Cancer saved me. I had something to fight against again, something to overcome.
"I asked myself, 'what do you do if it comes back?' and I decided that I would face it again. I saw things clearly and I know that from one day to the next, everything could change. I'd even say that the disease improved me... I stopped dreaming, I prefer now to set myself achievable goals."
One of those targets was the Italy team, which he reached at the age of 31 when -- after couple of friendly appearances earlier in his career -- he played his first official Azzurri match against Finland in September 2019, netting his one and only internation goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina two months later.
Acerbi has been rewarded for his memorable season by a recall to the Italy set-up for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Moldova, a first call-up since March last year. But he was forced to leave his last Azzurri training camp after allegations that he racially abused Juan Jesus during a highly-charged match between Inter and Napoli.
Acerbi was spared punishment by the Italian football federation (FIGC) due a lack of evidence, the disciplinary authorities saying that "the discriminatory content... seems to have been perceived only by the offended player".
Napoli were so outraged at the decision that they pulled out of the FIGC's "purely cosmetic" anti-racism initiatives, while Jesus felt "bitter" about the decision which saved Acerbi from a 10-match ban that would have ended his season right before Euro 2024.
Acerbi ended up missing the Euros with injury, and hamstring problems dogged him during the first half of this season, but he has come roaring back and could yet lead Inter to an era-defining triumph. – AFP

Head coach Juan Antonio Pizzi has called up Al-Salmiya's Fawaz Ayed to replace injured Al-Qadisiya player Abdulaziz Wadi, who sustained an injury during the semi-final of His Highness the Amir's Cup against Kuwait Club last Thursday. Pizzi has named a 26-man squad for the upcoming fixtures, which includes: Saud Al-Hoshan, Mishari Ghannam, Fahad Al-Hajri, Mohammed Daham, Reda Hani, Ahmed Al-Dhafiri, Ahmed Al-Zanki, Yousef Nasser, Khaled Al-Rashidi, Moaz Al-Dhafiri, Eid Al-Rashidi, Mubarak Al-Fenini, Jassim Al-Matar, Khaled Sabah, Rashid Al-Dosari, Suleiman Abdul-Ghafoor, Hassan Hamdan, Mohammed Khaled, Abdulwahab Al-Awadhi, Hussein Ashkanani, Yousef Majed, Moaz Al-Aseema, Mahdi Dashti, Hamad Harbi, and Abdulrahman Al-Rashidi. Kuwait currently sits sixth in Group B with 5 points from eight matches, having drawn five. To keep qualification hopes alive, Kuwait must win both upcoming matches and hope for Oman to drop points in the final two rounds.

Man City chief promises ‘swift' transfer deals for Club World Cup

LONDON: Manchester City's Spanish manager Pep Guardiola waves to the crowd after his team's English Premier League match against Fulham at Craven Cottage in London on May 25, 2025. - AFP MANCHESTER: Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has promised the overhaul of Pep Guardiola's squad will continue at pace in the weeks ahead of the Club World Cup. After an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles, City suffered a dismal season by the standards set during Guardiola's reign. They finished a distant third in the Premier League, won just three of 10 games in the Champions League and lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace to end without a trophy for the first time since 2016/17. Khaldoon accepted the club were not 'aggressive' enough in the transfer market last year to rejuvenate their squad. City responded in January by signing Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez at a combined cost of more than £172 million ($232 million). More arrivals are expected before the start of the Club World Cup on June 14 despite Guardiola's plea to work with a smaller squad next season. 'This January we had to act,' Khaldoon said in his annual end-of-season interview. 'Four players in January (came in), and that gives you an idea of what's coming this summer because we will continue. We have clearly identified who exactly are the targets, in what positions, and we have our clear number one option, our clear number two option. And we'll go about our business and it will be very clear, very swift. And our objective is to try to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup.' Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki and AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders are among those linked with a move to the Etihad. Guardiola extended his contract with the club until 2027 back in November during the worst of City's struggles. Khaldoon is confident the side that has dominated English football over the last decade will quickly be back on top. 'We will be back. This season is a season that's now behind us. Today is a new day. We start working and preparing for next season,' he added. 'I can assure you, this club will do everything possible to come back to the standards that we know we all can achieve and that we know, we will achieve.' — AFP

Kvaratskhelia eyes double success at Inter's expense

PARIS: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has already played a part in denying Inter Milan the Serie A title this season, and the Georgian is now hoping to get the better of them again with Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final. The 24-year-old Kvaratskhelia moved to Paris in January from Napoli for a reported 70 million euros ($79.2m) plus bonuses. He is set to have a key role to play for Luis Enrique's side against Inter in Munich, despite missing last weekend's French Cup final victory over Reims as a precaution due to a minor fitness issue. Perhaps he had been up late the previous night celebrating his former club's Serie A triumph, as Napoli pipped Inter to the Scudetto in their final game of the season. Napoli's second Italian league championship in three campaigns was claimed despite 'Kvara', one of the stars of their title in 2023, leaving the team in the middle of the season. Instrumental two years ago when he earned the nickname 'Kvaradona' at the club where Diego Maradona is an icon, he played a pivotal part in the early weeks of this season under Antonio Conte, scoring five goals in the first 10 Serie A games -- only four Napoli players finished the campaign with more goals, including Scott McTominay. Kvaratskhelia can therefore claim an Italian league winner's medal for this season as well as one for Ligue 1 for his contribution towards PSG's cruise to the domestic title. However, his transfer to PSG has really aided the French side in Europe, where the extra competition for places in attack has helped bring the best out of fellow forwards Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue. The left-winger who loves to play with his socks rolled down around his ankles also fits perfectly into coach Luis Enrique's system, which demands that the attackers do their bit to help the team defensively. 'He is perfectly adaptable to our way of playing. He is versatile. He can go past players and he can also defend which is essential because we need to be able to defend as 11 players and attack as 11 players,' Luis Enrique said in January. 'He fits into our idea of how to play football.' Key for PSG already Kvaratskhelia has so far contributed six goals and six assists in 24 appearances for PSG, including one magnificent strike against Aston Villa in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final and the pass to set up Dembele's winning goal away to Arsenal in the semis. PSG had already started to turn a corner following a sluggish start this season when the former Rubin Kazan player arrived, but Luis Enrique is convinced Kvaratskhelia's presence has been essential in his team getting to Munich. 'If you analyze in depth how we have improved defensively, it comes down to the way the attackers help out. The way they defend is exceptional, and the statistics show how many balls they recover for us,' the coach said last week. The PSG boss still faces a difficult decision over which one of his four main attackers to leave out of the front three on the night -- 33-goal top scorer Dembele is certain to start, meaning one of the in-form Doue or the lively Barcola will have to drop to the bench if Kvaratskhelia is to be in the starting XI. But his experience of playing Inter could be invaluable, even if Simone Inzaghi's side fared well when they came up against him at Napoli. Kvaratskhelia won just once in six clashes against the Nerazzurri with his former club, and has never scored against them. 'Technically he's a special player so it won't be easy,' insisted Denzel Dumfries, Inter's Dutch right wing-back who is likely to be in direct opposition to Kvaratskhelia on the night. Can Inter this time be celebrating at his expense or will Kvaratskhelia get his hands on another winner's medal on Saturday? — AFP
