Traffic "emergency" could lead to new congestion charge in Oxford
A temporary congestion charge is being considered for Oxford after a bus company warned that traffic delays were at "emergency levels".Oxfordshire County Council said introducing a £5 daily charge for cars on six roads in the city is one of the options available for managing the problem.The authority said action was needed because of delays to a planned trial of traffic filters, which cannot be introduced until Botley Road is reopened.The route is currently shut because of overrunning works at Oxford Station and the railway bridge, which are now not due to finish until August next year.
The charging points for the congestion zone would be in the same places as the planned traffic filters:Hythe Bridge StreetSt Cross RoadSt Clement's StreetThames StreetMarston Ferry RoadHollow WayPaying the £5 charge, which would only apply to cars, would allow drivers to go through the six charge locations until the end of the day.Permits would be available for carers, traders, blue badge holders, and those commuting to or living in a central area of the city.
The change is being considered after warnings about delays from the Oxford Bus Group.Managing Director Luke Marion said: "Oxford simply cannot cope with another year of worsening congestion – rather than continuing to wait for the traffic filters, we need a 'plan B' to address the congestion problem over the next 12 months, and we need it quickly."Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport said action was needed."We urgently need to see improvements to travel around the city; better bus services and less traffic overall, to help people get around," he added.The proposals will be discussed by the council's cabinet on June 17 and, if approved, a six-week public consultation would start later this month.The authority said this was with a view to implementing the congestion charge this autumn, and that as a temporary scheme it could be in place for a maximum of two years.

Mighty outputs, even by today's standards. Then there's the $2m Spider, which is arguably even more gorgeous than the Berlinetta. And considerably rarer, since production amounted to just... 121 units. This one gets wire-spoked 'Borrani' alloys and a colour-matched front strip, and is believed to be one of only six Spiders to get a lick of 'Rosso Dino' paint complete with beige upholstery. It's also the last convertible Ferrari to use that famous Colombo engine. The trio concludes with the race-bred Prancing Horse: a Series III 'Competizione'. 15 were factory-built, and the one in question DNF'd at Le Mans in '74, but went on to win the GT Class at the Daytona 24 Hours the following year. There's pedigree, alright. Advertisement - Page continues below Changes over the standard Berlinetta include a front lip with vertical fins to boost aero, wider rear wheel arches and lighter body panels made of steel. Mechanically, there's an improved compression ratio and sharper timing, billeted steel pistons and connecting rods, plus revised exhaust manifolds. There's also four fuel pumps as opposed to two, and air ducts fitted ahead of the thicker stoppers for better cooling. That V12 also gets a hefty power bump to 450bhp, so it should be a good laugh on the various global classical events you can enter it into. ITV are said to have cut flights abroad for Andi Peters and Jeff Brazier amid hundreds of redundancies. Sweeping changes were announced in May to ITV Daytime shows. 5 The changes will impact the likes of This Morning, Loose Women and Lorraine. More than 220 jobs will be lost as part of the shake-up — meaning almost half of the 450 employed on the four flagship shows will be let go. Cuts will be made to staff working on the likes of GMB, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women. And now the channel has stopped sending Andi Peters and Jeff Brazier to tropical destinations for the competition segments of Daytime shows. According to MailOnline, ITV feel it is "bad taste" to keep sending Andi, 54, and Jeff, 46, to lavish locations after the announcement of the company's cuts. Already in 2025, Andi has been flown to Australia, Cape Town, the Maldives and Florida to host competition segments. Meanwhile, Jeff has been seen plugging competitions from Sri Lanka, Malta and Thailand. According to the outlet, a source has said: "TV have scaled back on sending top talent overseas to present their competition segments." The source added: "The competitions themselves, which give viewers the chance to win six figure sums and idyllic holidays, bring in a great deal of revenue. "But constantly flying the likes of Andi and Jeff to the Maldives and South Africa was starting to frustrate staff and viewers alike. The 1% Club knocks out a whopping 16 celebs with easy anagram question "It was decided that they would dial down for a few weeks after the budget cuts were announced and no one has flown overseas to present the competitions since." They added how as well as viewers being "disgruntled" about, "it was felt continuing to send talent abroad to luxurious holiday destinations as others are losing their jobs would be in bad taste". The Sun reached out to ITV but they declined to comment. This comes amid ITV's shocking shakeup that will see hundreds of people lose their jobs at the channel. Good Morning Britain will be extended by 30 minutes to run from 6am to 9.30am daily. Lorraine will run from 9.30am-10am, on a seasonal basis for 30 weeks of the year. During the weeks Lorraine is not on air, Good Morning Britain will run from 6am to 10am. This Morning will remain in its 10am-12.30pm slot on weekdays throughout the year. Loose Women will be in the 12.30-1.30pm slot, again on a seasonal basis for 30 weeks of the year. The changes will take effect from January 2026. 5 5
