Ilya Samsonov gets 2nd shutout of season as Knights blank Penguins

Reuters08-03-2025

March 8 - Mark Stone had a goal and two assists and Ilya Samsonov made 22 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Vegas Golden Knights blanked the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 on Friday night in Las Vegas.
Tanner Pearson had a goal and an assist and Ivan Barbashev and Brandon Saad also scored goals for Vegas, which extended its Pacific Division lead to six points over idle Edmonton with its fourth straight win and seventh in the last eight games.
It was Samsonov's 15th career shutout for and followed back-to-back games that he had allowed five goals. The Golden Knights, who last lost in regulation at T-Mobile Arena on Jan. 11 to the New York Rangers, 2-1, extended their home point streak to 10 games (7-0-3) while also improving to 24-6-3 on home ice.
Alex Nedeljkovic finished with 23 saves for Pittsburgh, which lost its fourth consecutive game and eighth in its last nine.
Vegas took a 1-0 lead at 12:58 of the first period when Stone picked up a rebound of a Zach Whitecloud shot by the right side of the net and then backhanded a pass to Pearson cutting down the slot. Pearson then fired a wrist shot into the top left corner of the goal.
Barbashev made it 2-0 early in the second period when he ripped a wrist shot from the left circle past Nedeljkovic's glove and into the top far corner of the net.
Vegas then broke the game open with two goals in within 54 seconds early in the third period.
Saad got the first when he ripped a wrist shot from the top of the right circle over the right shoulder of Nedeljkovic and into the top far corner. Stone followed when he took a Pearson pass coming down the right wing, deked Nedeljkovic and then stuffed a wrist shot inside the right post.

Dallas Stars fire Pete DeBoer despite team's impressive season

The Dallas Stars have fired head coach Pete DeBoer after three seasons in charge, with the Texas powerhouse making the Western Conference Finals in each of those years. DeBoer is a longtime NHL head coach, who achieved plenty of success leading the Stars' bench but failed to get the team to the Stanley Cup Finals in a trio of direct attempts. The Stars were eliminated the last two postseasons by the Edmonton Oilers, with a defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. The 56-year-old DeBoer has 18 seasons of NHL experience as a head coach and has never won a Stanley Cup. He led the New Jersey Devils in 2012 and the San Jose Sharks in 2016 to his only pair of Stanley Cup Finals as a bench boss, where his team lost to the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins respectively. DeBoer's last six seasons leading a team to the playoff have ended with an elimination in the conference finals, dating back to the 2019 playoffs with the Sharks. The timing from the Stars leaves their post as the only head-coaching vacancy. In the last few days, the Penguins hired Dan Muse to heir helm and the Boston Bruins scooped up Marco Sturm, with DeBoer being a more impressive candidate than either of those two men. Unless the Stars hire a standing NHL head coach, which could happen with one of the deepest rosters in hockey, DeBoer will have to wait a season for his next bench leadership role. Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals is Friday night, with the Oilers up 1-0 on the Florida Panthers after an overtime goal from Leon Draisaitl. The Stars last won a Stanley Cup in 1999 and most recently advanced past the Western Conference Final in the bubble during 2020, losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the league championship.

William Hill offer: Bet £10 on Epsom Derby get £60 free bets

Enjoy £60 in free bets with William Hill when you open a new account and bet £10 on any sports market using the code T60 William Hill will be no stranger to the Epsom Derby Festival event and is offering new customers £60 in free bets when they sign-up and place a £10 bet on the Epsom Oaks on Friday using code T60. This weekend, Epsom Downs will once again capture the racing world's attention as The Derby, the pinnacle of flat racing, unfolds. With roots reaching back to 1780, this iconic event has long fascinated audiences globally. The Derby is part of a weekend featuring two prestigious Classics. It begins with The Oaks on Friday, a race for fillies over a mile and a half, paving the way for Saturday's main event: The Derby. This is where colts battle it out over the same distance, creating a spectacle that draws international interest. The racing season kicked off last month at Newmarket with the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas, which similarly separated races for fillies and colts over equal distances. This year's winner will take home an impressive £918,702. With up to 20 runners expected after Wednesday's final declarations, the competition is set to be fierce. Leading the betting odds at around 3/1 is Delacroix, although Godolphin's entry under Charlie Appleby's guidance poses a strong challenge. Interestingly, this year sees no clear standout favourite—a trend in recent years. Last year, City Of Troy triumphed as a 3/1 favourite, while Desert Crown secured victory at 5/2 in 2022.
