Seven men charged for alleged roles in robberies targeting Burrow, Mahomes, other athletes' homes

New York Times19-02-2025

Federal prosecutors have charged seven Chilean men for their alleged roles in a string of high-profile robberies targeting the homes of professional athletes.
The individuals — Pablo Zuniga Cartes, Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, Bastian Orellano Morales, Alexander Huiaguil Chavez, and Sergio Ortega Cabello — are members of a South American Theft Group, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in Tampa on Tuesday. The group members range in age from 20 to 38. They were charged with conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, according to the complaint.

Each person faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.
The group allegedly stole valuables worth over $2 million from athletes' homes while they were away or playing in games at the time of the invasions. The complaint includes a photo of three of the men — Pablo Zuniga Cartes, Ignacio Zuniga Cartes and Freraut — and a fourth individual whose identity is redacted posing with a damaged safe and several watches allegedly stolen from the home of Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis Jr. The photo is timestamped Nov. 2, 2024, according to the criminal complaint.
The following day, Portis posted a video on X saying his home was burglarized the night before while he was playing in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Portis also posted a video showing two people trying to enter his front door. The individuals were dressed in similar outfits and one of them carried a backpack.
On Dec. 9, 2024, the home of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was robbed while the Bengals were playing the Dallas Cowboys in Texas. Items valued at around $300,000, including designer luggage, watches and jewelry, were stolen, per the complaint. Cabello rented a vehicle in South Florida with a fraudulent Argentinean ID and used the car in the burglary, the complaint said.
On Feb. 5, a federal grand jury in Cincinnati charged Cabello, Sanchez and Morales in connection to the burglary of Burrow's home.
Tuesday's complaint also links the group of Chilean men to home invasions of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and players for the Memphis Grizzlies and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Earlier this month, the FBI announced it would spearhead a coordinated, nationwide operation to investigate burglaries targeting professional athletes. The FBI said members of South American Theft Groups (SATG) orchestrated the burglaries, and the bureau had arrested two men who they said ran East Coast operations to resell stolen goods.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Rumors Get Major Update

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Milwaukee Bucks are adamant about keeping their superstar forward, Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, there is a chance that Antetokounmpo could be on the move, at least according to ESPN's NBA insider, Shams Charania. On a recent appearance on ESPN's Get Up, Charania mentioned how an Antetokounmpo trade could take place later this summer. How much can they improve this team in their moves? He said it, he wants to compete for championships. Can the Bucks make those championship moves? His future, I've said it for the last few weeks, it won't be tied to the draft, it won't be tied to free agency. If there is a resolution on Giannis Antetokounmpo, it could be later in the summer." Is Giannis Antetokounmpo trade this summer dead? Latest speculation tries to keep that ember burning.

Let's be clear from the outset: Giannis Antetokounmpo has not asked for a trade. The Milwaukee Bucks have no intention of trading him. There are no ongoing trade talks involving Antetokounmpo. That's not enough to completely snuff out Antetokounmpo trade speculation or rumors. Two of ESPN's reporters specializing in trade talks and rumors speculated in the last 48 hours that Antetokounmpo could reassess his situation, and trade talks could heat up again later this summer after free agency. They fanned the ember of an Antetokounmpo trade to keep it burning. ESPN's newsbreaker Shams Charania was on the network's 'Get Up' show Thursday and laid out a scenario for a potential Antetokounmpo trade later in the summer. 'He's been there for 12 years, so there's going to be that equity given to the Bucks to see what they do during the draft week, free agency week. How much can they improve this team in their moves? He said it, he wants to compete for championships. Can the Bucks make those championship moves? His future, I've said it for the last few weeks, it won't be tied to the draft, it won't be tied to free agency. If there is a resolution on Giannis Antetokounmpo, it could be later in the summer.' ESPN's Brian Windhorst was on the Rich Eisen Show and echoed the same idea — nothing is close, there are no talks, but other teams are still watching the situation. 'When you see teams not go after Kevin Durant to save their assets for something bigger, I can't say for sure. I can't say absolutely what's in Pat Riley's mind, as he doesn't put all of his assets on the table that he could for Kevin Durant. I can't say exactly what Leon Rose is thinking as general manager and president of the New York Knicks when they elect to pass on Durant. But I can state those facts surrounding the Bucks and you can extrapolate what you can extrapolate.' The most likely outcome — by far — is that next season Antetokounmpo is a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. That's also a kind of boring answer. What's far more interesting is someone saying, 'So you're telling me there's a chance.' And in an NBA where Luka Doncic gets traded, anything seems possible. So that ember just keeps getting fanned and stays warm.

Brian Windhorst Hints at Big Push From Heat For Another Superstar Still On the Table

Brian Windhorst Hints at Big Push From Heat For Another Superstar Still On the Table originally appeared on Athlon Sports. ESPN's Brian Windhorst has sparked speculation about the Miami Heat's future moves, suggesting a strategic wait for a bigger prize than Kevin Durant. Advertisement In a recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Windhorst noted that teams, including possibly the Heat, are holding back assets, hinting at a larger target. "I'm reacting off teams' actions. When you see teams not go after KD, to save their assets, for something bigger," Windhorst said, leaving fans and analysts guessing. The implication? The Heat might be eyeing Giannis Antetokounmpo, despite recent trade proposal setbacks due to limited assets. Windhorst's comments align with the Heat's history of bold moves, but also highlight the challenges posed by their current roster and draft capital constraints. Advertisement Pat Riley's cautious approach, as Windhorst suggests, could be a calculated risk, banking on Antetokounmpo's potential willingness to leave the Milwaukee Bucks. Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo© Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images This theory gains traction given the Heat's reputation as a desired destination for stars, as shown by LeBron James signing with them in the 2010 free agency. However, the feasibility of such a move remains uncertain, with the Heat's ability to outbid other contenders in question due to the assets they may view as untouched. After failing to put up a sufficient enough offer to land superstar forward Kevin Durant, Pat Riley and the Heat have lost a significant amount of momentum in the NBA offseason thus far. Advertisement Windhorst's insight reignites hope among Heat fans, but also underscores the high stakes and unpredictable nature of NBA trades. As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Miami's next big play.
