Lakers newsletter: Some random thoughts about the team with the playoffs drawing closer
Hey everyone, I'm Dan Woike and welcome back to The Times' Lakers Newsletter, a chance for me to escape from the monotony of writing about the Lakers to write two paragraphs about basketball, after like 700 or so more words about the Lakers.
We're starting to enter this strange stage of the season; the playoff push hasn't truly started but it's too close to ignore. So welcome to the in-between.
In honor of that premise, here are 28 thoughts about the Lakers at this stage in the season.
1. Luka Doncic isn't close to being over the trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers, but in conversations with people around him, that shock eventually is going to turn to motivation and anger.
2. Why was he so upset by the trade? Best anyone can tell, Doncic had hoped to finish his career in Dallas much like Dirk Nowitzki did.
3. The grand conspiracies surrounding the Doncic trade almost all have been debunked.
4. The most agreed-upon truth, in its simplest terms, being that Dallas just didn't believe in him as the centerpiece any longer, especially with a massive supermax looming.
5. Nothing shocking here, but the Lakers have been operating as a team that hopes to secure Doncic's long-term commitment.
6. He's extension eligible this summer.
7. People who have worked with Doncic know how stung he's been by all of this, and you could see the emotional toll Tuesday's game with the Mavericks took on him.
8. Good news is that he has to do that only one more time — in the regular season.
9. Sweet sassy molassy, the Jordan 'All My Exes' ad is wonderful.
10. I asked JJ Redick about LeBron James' defense after the win over the Mavs, and while I didn't expect him to say he thought James has been all-defensive-team good, the 40-year-old star has to have played himself onto some MVP ballots.
11. Long term, being around LeBron is going to be great for Doncic, and short term, being around Doncic is going to be great for LeBron.
12. James' work as a catch-and-shoot threat (he's been over 40% these last two seasons) is a crazy testament to his ever-evolving game, even in Season 22.
13. Watching Kyrie Irving attack the Lakers' defense made it clear that they really could use a Max Christie type.
14. Klay Thompson, who hilariously thought Doug Christie was Max Christie's father, told me Max is 'oozing with potential' and that he's been really impressed with Max's maturity.
15. The Doncic trade is the move we'll remember from this season, but adding Dorian Finney-Smith was a total toughness transfusion.
16. The 'Gortat screen' — a pick set underneath the basket for a driving player— that DFS set was one of a handful of monster 'little things' plays that he made against Dallas.
17. He finished that game one for six from the field and still was one of the most important players on the court in crunch time.
18. This is what people mean when they talk about 'winning basketball,' players who can move the needle even when they don't put the ball in the basket.
19. Speaking of extensions, I wouldn't hold my breath that Austin Reaves signs one this offseason. He's headed for a huuuuuge raise in the summer of 2026.
20. While Reaves' catch-and-shoot game isn't his biggest strength, he's at least had the good sense to knock down the two threes he's gotten off absurd, no-look, kick-back passes from Doncic.
21. There are 15 players in the NBA averaging at least 19 points, six assists and four rebounds — a list that includes Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Domantas Sabonis, Damian Lillard, Devin Booker, Stephen Curry, Cade Cunningham, James Harden, De'Aaron Fox, Scottie Barnes, LaMelo Ball and Ja Morant.
22. The other three players — LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves — play for the Lakers.
23. So yeah, Reaves is gonna get paid.
24. The two Lakers who could see their stock rise most playing with Doncic have to be Jaxson Hayes, the last center standing, and Rui Hachimura.
25. Hachimura, who has become a corner-three specialist, also is going to feast at the rim off baseline cuts against defenses that rightfully will be focused on Doncic, James and Reaves on the perimeter.
26. The arguments against waiving a roster player to make way for Jordan Goodwin aren't very strong.
27. A huge part of coaching is getting buy-in from your players, and the Lakers have bought in to Redick and the coaching staff's game plans.
28. The tests over the next month are going to be brutal, and the Lakers have been streaky all season. But they've proven that they're dangerous, provided they keep playing this hard.

If it seems like my random thoughts ran out of steam — well, that's very perceptive of you. The thing about the in-between season is that the games are starting to stack up and the good nights of sleep are too fleeting. I'll try better next time — provided I get eight solid hours.

Doc Rivers tells Kobe Bryant story from 2008 NBA Finals: 'He put that fear in you, man'
Doc Rivers tells Kobe Bryant story from 2008 NBA Finals: 'He put that fear in you, man' Kobe Bryant, the late Los Angeles Lakers great, was one of the greatest basketball players and overall athletes of all time. He led the Lakers to five NBA championships, and he was not only one of the greatest crunch-time performers ever but, in the minds of some, he was possibly the greatest closer ever. Even when the Lakers were down by double digits in the fourth quarter of a game, fans often thought there was still a chance the team could pull out a victory because of Bryant's exploits under pressure and his lack of fear. Like anyone else, he had his share of lowlights, and one of the worst moments of his career came when L.A. was embarrassed in the 2008 NBA Finals by the archrival Boston Celtics. It lost Game 6, 131-92, in Boston as the Celtics claimed their 17th championship, and although the Celtics were ahead by a wide margin down the stretch, head coach Doc Rivers could still feel the fear that Bryant always put in the minds and hearts of opponents. Celtics defensive coordinator Tom Thibodeau wanted Rivers to take his starters out midway through the fourth quarter, but Rivers refused because he feared that Bryant could get L.A. back in the game. Via Fox Sports: 'Game 6 was terrific,' Rivers said. 'That's a moment that I remember in 2008. The funniest moment, Kobe knows this, but we were up 1,000 [points] in Game 6 and the guy who you would least expect walks over to me during the game -- Tom Thibodeau -- and he asks me, 'Are you going to sub out? There's six minutes and we're up 42 points.' 'Of all the guys to say that, it's Tom Thibodeau. And I looked over there at the Lakers and Kobe was still on the floor, and I actually said, 'When Phil [Jackson] takes that guy out, I take my guys out.' And Thibs said, 'You're safe.' And I said, 'Not with that guy on the floor.' 'I was dead serious. I had obviously lost my mind because it was a 42-point lead. But he put that fear in you, man. He could run off threes. I was obviously not good at math, so I was worried about him. Then finally Phil took him out so I could sub. It was good.' The type of deficit the Lakers faced in the fourth quarter of that game was one even Bryant couldn't overcome. The embarrassment they suffered bonded the team together, and coming into next season, it was clearly on a mission. It won the 2009 NBA title, but it defeated the Orlando Magic and not the Celtics. The Lakers finally got another shot at the men in green in the 2010 finals, and this time, they won it all, as they overcame a 13-point deficit in the third quarter of Game 7. Bryant shot 6-of-24 from the field in that seventh game, but he played very well for most of the second half and especially in the fourth quarter, as he found ways to be efficient offensively while also contributing in other areas. For those who paid attention to his excellent play down the stretch of the game, it reinforced his image as arguably basketball's ultimate closer.

Seattle fills out forward group, while Vancouver emphasizes defense following PWHL expansion draft
PWHL Seattle GM Meghan Turner can already envision having her top two lines in place with a group of forwards led by Hilary Knight. In Vancouver, general manager Cara Gardner Morey's emphasis was defense first. The league's two newest teams took distinct approaches in continuing to build their respective identities during the league's seven-round expansion draft on Monday night. The draft followed the PWHL's five-day exclusive signing period in which both teams signed their allowed maximum of five players. Though Vancouver used five of its seven selections on forwards, Gardner Morey opened the draft by choosing Ottawa defenseman Ashton Bell with the No. 1 pick. Bell and Boston's Sydney Bard, selected 13th on Monday, join a talented blueline that already includes the former Minnesota tandem of Claire Thompson and Sophie Jaques, who signed with Vancouver last week. 'I was a defender and I really think it's such a valuable position, and finding the right D and having a great core, one through eight even, is what makes championship teams,' said Gardner Morey, who is also set in net with the signing of Ottawa goalie Emerance Maschmeyer. In Seattle, Turner used the No. 2 pick on selecting Ottawa defenseman Aneta Tejralová. She then chose forwards with Seattle's next three selections in picking Boston's Hannah Bilka, New York's Jessie Eldridge and Toronto's Julia Gosling. The trio join a forward group that already features Knight, Alex Carpenter and Danielle Serdachny, who were signed last week. Seattle's initial 12-player roster features a mix of leadership in veterans Knight and Carpenter and emerging youth with four of six players selected in the first round of last year's draft in Serdachny (selected second), Bilka (fourth), defenseman Cayla Barnes (fifth) and Gosling (sixth). 'I'm really excited for these younger players to be able to learn from truly some of the best in the game in terms of Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight,' Turner said of the two long-time U.S. national team stars. 'I don't know if I was specifically forward-minded, but it's hard to pass up the three that I did sign.' Both expansion franchises are working under the same salary-cap restrictions as the league's other six teams, though the PWHL does not reveal player salaries. And both enjoy an advantageous head start with the league limiting existing teams to initially protecting only three players, before allowed to add a fourth player to the list after a team loses two from its roster. Each of the existing teams lost four players apiece, with the rules favoring the expansion teams by allowing them to be competitive from the start of the PWHL's third season, expected to open in November. Seattle's lineup features plenty of offense. Knight, a four-time Olympian, is an PWHL MVP finalist this year after finishing tied for the league lead with 29 points. Carpenter was an MVP finalist in 2024, when she finished tied for second with 23 points. And Eldridge, this season, finished tied for fifth in the league with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists). Vancouver earned the first pick after winning a ball drawing. Both teams then alternated in having two picks each before Seattle closed the draft by selecting Boston defenseman Emily Brown 14th. Turner split her picks in selecting three forwards and four defensemen, rounded out by Montreal's Anna Wilgren and Toronto's Megan Carter. Vancouver chose two defenseman and five forwards, including Toronto's Izzy Daniel, who closed her senior season at Cornell in being selected the 2024 Patty Kazmaier award winner as women's hockey MVP. Daniel joins former Toronto teammate Sarah Nurse, who signed with Vancouver last week. Joining Thompson and Jaques in Vancouver are two more members of the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost in forwards Brooke McQuigge and Denisa Krizova. Vancouver also drafted Montreal forward Abby Boreen and New York forward Gabby Rosenthal. Next up for the expansion teams is joining the rest of the league in the free-agent signing period that opens on Monday followed by the six-round PWHL draft on June 24 in Ottawa. ___ AP women's hockey:
