Global yoga movement began with PM Modi's vision: Prataprao Jadhav

New Delhi: When the United Nations General Assembly adopted June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 -- following the visionary call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi -- it marked the beginning of a global wellness movement rooted in India's traditional wisdom, said Union Minister of State for Ayush Ministry, Prataprao Jadhav, on Thursday. Addressing the media during the curtain-raiser event here for the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY), Jadhav reflected on how IDY has become a worldwide movement. 'From the record-setting first event in the national capital to celebrations in cities like Mysuru, New York, and Srinagar, Yoga has brought together people from across the globe in the pursuit of health and peace,' he said. The curtain-raiser event was held at the National Media Centre here and marked the formal beginning of the IDY 2025 celebrations. The national event this year will be led by PM Modi on June 21 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Speaking about the significance of this year's event, the Minister said that the 11th edition of IDY is not just a celebration but a call to expand Yoga's reach across society". 'This year's theme, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', is in line with the global health vision promoted during India's G20 Presidency and reflects the Indian ideal of 'Sarve Santu Niramaya' -- meaning 'May all be free from disease'," the Union Minister stated. The minister shared that the grand event in Visakhapatnam will see PM Modi leading the common yoga protocol session with over five lakh participants. At the same time, 'Yoga Sangam' sessions will be held at more than one lakh locations across the country, making it one of the biggest synchronised yoga demonstrations ever. He also praised the Andhra Pradesh government and its Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, for launching the 'YogaAndhra' campaign. This state-level initiative aims to create a community of 10 lakh regular yoga practitioners. As part of the lead-up to the main event, the Ministry has planned ten signature events over 100 days. These events are designed to engage people from all walks of life and promote yoga as a complete lifestyle. Some of these include 'Yoga Samavesh' for inclusivity and 'Yoga Bandhan' to promote international cooperation.

Shikhar Dhawan opens up about his diet, fitness, calorie count: ‘If I have to sacrifice…'

Former cricketer Shikhar Dhawan recently spoke about his diet and fitness, revealing how he has been gymming since he was 15-16. 'I was 11 when I started training. Back then, we had to run 5 to 10 rounds and stand all day. I did that for many years. Then I learnt striding and everything. From the Delhi trainer, I learnt a lot about running. I started gymming from 15-16 years. So, I have been gymming for the past 24 years, continuously for 21 years,' Dhawan told Ranveer Allahabadia on the latter's new chat show on YouTube. Dhawan shared that he has always been 'disciplined' about his diet. 'I have reduced my calorie count. I am very focused. I try not to eat sweets. I don't eat sweets. If I have to sacrifice, I have to. I want to maintain a good personality. I want to look good, so I will do it. I've always had a nutritionist. I think if you have no idea about diet, it is good to have a nutritionist,' Dhawan, 39, added. Taking a cue from this exchange, let's understand how crucial diet and fitness are to looking good and staying in shape. When it comes to looking good and staying in shape, diet and fitness are game-changers. 'What you eat every day doesn't just affect your waistline—it impacts your energy, skin, mood, and even your confidence,' said Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietitian and diabetes educator. A customised and personalised diet routine provides your body with the necessary fuel to build muscle, burn fat, and maintain overall health. 'Pair that with regular exercise, and you're not just working towards a toned body—you're also boosting your mood, sleeping better, and feeling more vibrant overall,' said Malhotra. But let's be honest, that's easier said than done. Figuring out what to eat and how to stick to a plan can be overwhelming. 'That's where a qualified dietician comes in. Think of a dietician as your nutrition buddy on this journey. They take the time to understand your lifestyle, preferences, and any health concerns you might have. Then, they create a meal plan that actually fits your life—not some one-size-fits-all diet,' stressed Malhotra. A nutrition expert helps you make smarter yet tasty food choices, helps with good food habits, avoids common pitfalls, and stays motivated, even when things get tough. 'They're there to answer questions, tweak your plan as you go, and celebrate your progress. The result? You don't just look good—you feel good, too. With the right support and a plan tailored just for you, staying in shape becomes much more achievable and enjoyable,' said Malhotra.
