A Wheelchair Accessible Day in Skagway, Alaska

Miami Herald23-05-2025

This trip was hosted. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
A cruise is a wonderful way to see many different places while unpacking once. That becomes especially important when you are traveling in a wheelchair.
When I wanted to see as much of Alaska as possible, I chose to cruise on Princess. I still needed accessibility off the ship, and I found plenty to do in a wheelchair during my day in Skagway.
I found Skagway to be one of the most picturesque towns in Alaska. The downtown included colorful historic buildings, in the backdrop of the mountains. My wheelchair accessible travel in Skagway had few problems.
The port of Skagway served as one of the starting points of the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 19th century. This is not your usual park as it is spread out among four areas, three in Alaska and one in Seattle, Washington. The Gold Rush National Historic Park chronicles this time in locations in the Skagway area:
Skagway Historic DistrictIn downtown Skagway, 20 buildings are considered historical and within the Klondike National Park. You'll also find the park's Visitors Center there so you can get more information on areas to visit and their accessibility.White Pass TrailA good part of the White Pass Trail is in the wilderness, but some can be explored from the railroad, Klondike Highway, or hiking trails-which are not wheelchair accessible.Chilkoot Trail/Dyea TownsiteOnly experienced hikers should consider taking on the Chilkoot Trail. Parts of the Dyea Townsite, however, are wheelchair-friendly with paved paths.
SheBuysTravel Tip: If you are going on the White Pass Railroad or bus trips from Skagway, bring your passport because most go through Canada.
Getting there
Skagway is the only Alaska port I went to that isn't an island. It can be reached by car, but there's a twist: you need to go through Canada to get there. The Alaskan city connects to Whitehorse, Canada.
Wheelchair excursions
I found a selection of wheelchair accessible excursions through Princess in Skagway for the train, bus, museums, and combinations. They do fill up so be sure to book yours as soon as you can. Some cruises, including mine, allow you to plan attractions before you even board.
Consider splitting your group
Multigenerational families are common on cruise ships. These consist of everyone from babies to grandparents. In my case, it was multi-ability, as I traveled with my able-bodied friend, Brittany. We split up for excursions at most ports.
In Skagway, Brittany did the Animal Planet Exclusive Kroschel Wildlife Refuge trip. She went on a boat across Mosquito Lake, then a bus to Haines, Alaska, where she visited with the animals at the Kroschel Films Wildlife Center.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Bring a jacket for your day in Skagway. Even in the summer, you can get the cool Canadian mountain air.
You can easily wheel from the port to downtown without transportation. If you don't take an excursion, you can spend the day wondering through stores, restaurants, and museums.
Accessible buses and taxis run throughout Skagway.
I found the locals to be extremely helpful in opening doors and leading me to accessible restrooms (such as in the Visitor's Center), and door entries.
SheBuysTravel Tip: I did have trouble finding curb cuts in some spots of Skagway. It took some effort, but there was always a way to get through to a street.
The most popular place to eat and drink in Skagway is the Red Onion Saloon. This former Bordello was opened in 1897. When I went there, the wait was about an hour, and it was too crowded to get the wheelchair into. I spoke to some others on the ship who waited and said it was a lot of fun.
I did stop at Klondike Doughboy to get Fry Bread and blueberry jam. It tastes similar to a funnel cake, though it's shaped differently.
Brittany's excursion finished earlier than mine did. She had a delicious burger and beer tasting at Skagway Brewing Company.
You won't have trouble finding places to shop in downtown Skagway. I found the stores were a little less touristy than other ports. Klondike General Store has a broad selection.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Skagway is a good place to buy gold nuggets, native carvings, and furs.

Canadian road trips to US drop 38 percent year-on-year

The number of Canadians returning from road trips to the United States fell sharply in May compared to the same period in 2024. Canadian-resident return trips by car totaled 1.3 million, a 38.1 percent drop from May 2024 — marking the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines. Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by air also fell — by 24.2 percent — compared to May 2024. The decline in Canadian-resident air travel from the U.S. accounts for the overall dip in return air travel. While Canadians' return travel by air declined by 3.7 percent overall, return air travel increased by 9.8 percent among Canadians returning from overseas countries compared to last May. U.S. residents, meanwhile, traveled to Canada at a lower rate than they did last year but saw a more modest decline than their Canadian counterparts. U.S.-resident arrivals to Canada by car fell by 8.4 percent and, by air, fell by 0.3 percent, compared to last May. The decline in Canadian road trips to the U.S. continued a trend seen in prior months. In April 2025, Canadian-resident return trips by car from the U.S. totaled 1.2 million — a 35.2 percent decline from April 2024. Canadian-resident return trips by air fell by 19.9 percent, compared to the prior month. The overall tourism decline threatens to wipe out $12.5 billion from the American economy this year, NewsNation reported. The decline in tourism comes as tensions between the U.S. and Canada have cooled under the Trump administration, as President Trump continues to muse publicly about making Canada a 51st state of America, which Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly rejected as a nonstarter.

Princess Cruises passengers warn of chaos at in-demand port

Princess Cruises passengers warn of chaos at in-demand port originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Many cruise passengers know that there's always a chance that their cruise itinerary can change, causing them to miss one of their planned ports of call. Usually this happens when weather conditions are unfavorable, but other factors can also contribute to unexpected changes to cruise port even when your cruise itinerary doesn't change, the port experience might sometimes not turn out like you expected. Staying flexible and open to the idea that plans could change usually leads to a better cruise experience no matter where you sail, but missing a port or activity you were looking forward to experiencing can still be frustrating. Some Princess Cruises passengers unfortunately found out what that's like as they missed planned shore excursions in one sought-after port due to a situation outside of their control — a situation that can happen on any busy day in this destination. Even though their ship was docked in port and they were ready to disembark at their assigned time, the process of getting passengers off the ship and into the port experienced an hours-long to Princess Cruises passenger posts on Reddit, some cruisers have experienced a chaotic disembarkation situation in Skagway, Alaska, on recent days with multiple cruise ships visiting the port simultaneously. 'Currently on an Alaskan Cruise with Princess, and unfortunately we missed our morning excursion (White Pass Scenic Train) in Skagway because Princess absolutely fumbled the de-boarding progress,' pingypongypangy posted in the Princess Cruises community on Reddit. The cruiser's ship was required to transport passengers to shore via tender boats during its visit to Skagway, and the process got really backed up. This sometimes happens with tendering, especially when weather conditions aren't Princess passenger chimed in on the thread to note that rough weather conditions caused a similar backup for their ship's tendering process on the day before. 'We are on the Royal Princess right now, and were in Skagway yesterday. We were late getting on land as well because of the tender situation," Rstuart11 noted. "But, to add an extra point in, they had to stop the tender boats altogether for almost an hour because of the weather.' Not every cruise ship that visits Skagway has to deal with the hassle of tendering, however. Tendering is only required at one dock location in the port, which is only used on busier days when there are multiple ships in of safety concerns related to a past rockslide from the hill above Skagway's Railroad Dock, cruise passengers can't walk the pier closest to the hill. If your ship is assigned to one particular berth by the hill (Railroad Forward, or RRF), you'll be shuttled from the ship to shore via a tender boat. 'Since the landslide a few years ago, they tender you a few hundred feet from the cruise ship pier to a typical tender pier as a legal/safety issue if the ship is parked at that pier,' Cuedon explained in the Reddit thread. Sometimes, a cruise ship's crew doesn't know in advance if they will be assigned to the tendering berth in Skagway.'Based on some of my trips last season, the ships themselves don't always know which pier they're going to be at until the day before or day of,' Cuedon added. 'Sapphire got the walk-off yesterday (and the week before), Royal got to suffer the tender.' The Skagway Visitor Department posted a 2025 cruise ship arrival schedule with each ship's dock assignment on its website, but all dock locations are subject to change. If your cruise is scheduled to visit Skagway on a busy day, your port experience can vary based on your ship's dock location. If you do find out that your ship will be the unlucky one required to tender, be prepared to get up early to get off the ship as soon as possible and avoid potential tendering delays and even missed excursions.
