Hawaiian Airlines plane evacuated in San Diego after passenger makes bomb threat
A Hawaiian Airlines plane was evacuated on Tuesday shortly before its scheduled takeoff at San Diego International Airport after a passenger made a bomb threat.
'During pushback from the gate, a guest was overheard making a threat to the safety of our aircraft,' the airline said in a statement, per ABC 10 News. 'As a precaution, the captain immediately taxied the Airbus A330 to a safe location on the airfield, where it was met with local and federal law enforcement and guests were safely deplaned.'
The flight was bound for Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu with a scheduled 8:28 a.m. departure time. The airline said the plane had 283 passengers and 10 crew members on board.
NBC News San Diego reported that dozens of patrol cars and unmarked black SUVs were seen parked around the plane.
San Diego Harbor Police Sgt. Jose Torres told KPBS that the situation was still being assessed on Tuesday afternoon. He said the plane has been moved to a secure area and bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in to examine the luggage.
The incident did not result in any issues with airport operations and any delays shown on FlightAware were not related to the incident, the airport said in a statement.

FlightAware says 52 total flights from Silver were canceled on Wednesday. The airline launched in 2011 and was based out of the Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale areas of Florida. It also had hubs in Tampa and Orlando, but filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last year. At the time, Silver said that it believed filing for bankruptcy would allow the company to raise funding and remain competitive with other businesses. Silver served more than a dozen destinations and also operated a subsidiary airline called Seaborne that sent seaplanes to islands like St. Croix and St. Thomas. The cancellations and abrupt end for the company are just another example of poor fortune for a beleaguered airline industry. Several airlines have dealt with delays and cancellations amid air traffic control shortage, while others are navigating a drop in customer sentiment. United Airlines apologized to passengers after severe issues related to meals last month, citing "significant disruptions to its in-flight food and beverage service" after switching to a new catering company. Tragic accidents out of major American cities like Washington and Philadelphia have also eroded trust in the safety of air travel this year. We'll see if and when Silver is able to bounce back from Wednesday's termination of service, and whether or not their former passengers will be able to reach their destinations. Silver Airways abruptly scuttled all of the Florida regional carrier's flights and told passengers booked on flights scheduled to depart Wednesday not to go to the airport. The bankrupt carrier said in an Instagram post that it would no longer serve customers as of June 11. Silver Airways also said it struck an agreement to sell it assets to a buyer that decided not to continue the carrier's flight operations, part of an effort to restructure the company's debt. The Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale-based airline, which launched in 2011 and which has hubs in Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December, saying the move would allow it to raise money and remain competitive.
