The man, surnamed Luo, was sentenced to 10 months for fraud in 2015 for manufacturing fake methamphetamine and selling it to drug addicts, according to the Yangtze Evening Post.

Taiwan's latest security measures cut cross-strait travel, prompting pushback

Taiwanese authorities are moving to tighten security protocols on cross-strait travel by expanding oversight to include grass-roots public officials and newly hired staff members of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The push, which mirrors similar but much harsher restrictions on the other side of the Taiwan Strait , comes amid fears that mainland Chinese intelligence has deeply infiltrated the Taiwanese political system. At the centre of a growing scandal is former DPP aide Huang Chu-jung, who is under investigation for allegedly using an encrypted messaging app developed on the mainland to leak classified information. Notably, the information in question involves the travel details of Taiwan's second most senior official at the time – now the island's leader – William Lai Ching-te , when he visited Paraguay in August 2023. Local media reported on Tuesday that prosecutors were alleging that Huang, who once worked for DPP New Taipei City Councillor Lee Yu-tien, also leaked travel plans from Lai's leadership campaign later the same year, compromising his personal security. Prosecutors said that through the app, which is not available on the market, Beijing obtained access to Lai's full daily itinerary – including unannounced meetings with political power brokers, business leaders, and local influencers. According to the prosecution case, the breaches extended beyond Lai's office. Other classified information alleged to have been funnelled to the mainland included deputy leader Hsiao Bi-khim's personal contact list and phone number.

Hong Kong constable's condition improving after fall from bridge: police chief

The condition of a Hong Kong police officer who fell 10 metres (32.8 feet) off a bridge to escape a crash is improving after he underwent an operation, the force's commissioner has said, adding that the man remains in an intensive care unit. Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming on Saturday also expressed his gratitude towards Tuen Mun Hospital staff who operated on the constable for their dedication. '[His] situation is becoming stable; we'll closely monitor the situation,' Chow said. A Hospital Authority spokeswoman said the injured officer was still in critical condition as of 9.30am on Saturday. Asked about hate speech directed at police after the incident, Chow said he had not read the comments online, but hoped that people could look at the matter 'in a humane way'. On Friday, 10 people were injured when a double-decker bus crashed into a police vehicle. The injured included the officer, who fell 10 metres from the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor when the impact happened. His condition was listed as critical in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

Hong Kong private estate pool told to close over fake lifeguard credentials

A swimming pool at a private estate in Hong Kong's Happy Valley has been ordered to close immediately after a lifeguard allegedly used a fake certificate, with the case also being reported to police. Advertisement The incident came to light on Friday after the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department last month implemented a raft of measures to prevent the employment of unqualified lifeguards at private swimming pools. The department checked a batch of lifeguard records with the Hong Kong China Life Saving Society that day and found that the credentials of an attendant who was on duty earlier in the week for the swimming pool at San Francisco Towers did not match official records. Earlier in the week, the department checked a batch of lifeguard records with the Hong Kong China Life Saving Society and found that the credentials of an attendant for the swimming pool at San Francisco Towers did not match official records. 'As the qualification of the life-saving attendant is in doubt and the swimming pool has allegedly failed to provide a sufficient number of qualified life-saving attendants as required by law, the department has ordered the immediate closure of the pool and is considering prosecuting its licensee,' the department said on Friday evening.
