(Reuters) -Top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen will lead South Africa during next month's Twenty20 tri-series with New Zealand and hosts Zimbabwe, with four uncapped players in the squad, Cricket South Africa said on Thursday.
Regular captain Aiden Markram and several key players have been rested for the series to help manage their workload, coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement shared by the CSA.
Conrad said it would be the start of South Africa's preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in February-March.
World Test Championship winners South Africa will also try out new players in the two-match red-ball series against Zimbabwe, starting Saturday, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder said.
Keshav Maharaj, who will lead the test team against Zimbabwe with Temba Bavuma absent due to injury, will also miss the T20 series along with Kagiso Rabada, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs.
Uncapped batter and wicketkeeper Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who is in the squad for the Zimbabwe test series, has also been called up for the tri-series, while Corbin Bosch, Rubin Hermann and Senuran Muthusamy have got their first international call-ups.
"With several senior players rested as part of their workload management, it creates space for these players to step in and show what they can offer, and bring them into contention for World Cup selection," Conrad added.
The T20 tournament, hosted at the Harare Sports Club, will kick off with a match between Zimbabwe and South Africa on July 14, with the final set for July 26.
South Africa squad:

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo (Reuters) -The National Hockey League on Thursday invited cities across North America, Europe and other international markets to submit expressions of interest to host games for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. Set for February 2028, the eight-nation World Cup of Hockey is scheduled to feature round robin and quarter-final games in two host cities, with the semi-finals and championship game to take place in one of those cities. "The World Cup of Hockey is a showcase of international hockey at the highest level, and we are thrilled to begin the host city selection process for 2028," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a press release. "This tournament offers cities a chance to be part of something truly global, while delivering meaningful economic and cultural benefits in return." The deadline for submissions is July 18 for North American cities and July 30 for international cities. The host cities will be chosen during the first quarter of 2026. The NHL, which is sending its players back to the Olympics next year for the first time since 2014, said the fourth edition of the World Cup of Hockey and first since 2016 is expected to last 12 days and include 17 games. The league also said the return of the World Cup of Hockey is building on the momentum of the 4 Nations Face-Off held in February 2025 in Montreal and Boston and featured NHL players from Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States. Whether players from Russia will participate in the World Cup of Hockey, which is run separately from the International Ice Hockey Federation, is to be determined. The IIHF suspended Russia from international competition through at least the end of the 2025-26 season because of the country's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ronaldo extends Al Nassr contract until 2027

RIYADH (Saudi Arabia): Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a two-year contract extension with Al Nassr, the Saudi Pro League side said today, which will keep the Portugal forward at the club past his 42nd birthday. Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United to become a free agent, has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for them in all competitions. "A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together," Ronaldo said in a post on X. Ronaldo arrived in Al Nassr on a two-and-a-half-year contract soon after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. That made him the highest-paid athlete in the world and he has topped the list for the last three years, according to Forbes. At the age of 40, Ronaldo's estimated total earnings are around US$275 million (RM1.16 billion). He has shown few signs of slowing down, with the forward leading Portugal to a second UEFA Nations League title this month when they beat neighbours Spain in the final. Ronaldo is also eyeing the 1,000-goal milestone in his career. He has scored 794 goals in club football and 138 for Portugal to take his tally to 932. His arrival in Saudi Arabia opened the floodgates for several high-profile players based in Europe to make the switch to the SPL, such as Ronaldo's former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema. Although Ronaldo has won the Arab Club Champions Cup with Al Nassr, he has been unable to guide them to the SPL title, with their best finish being runners-up in 2022-23 and 2023-24. They finished third last season. - REUTERS
