Nearly 150 offences spotted in Lincolnshire Police's A1 operation

BBC News18-04-2025

The latest round of a long-running police operation has uncovered 145 motoring offences on the A1.Lincolnshire Police said it spotted the offences over five days last week as part of Operation Tramline.Officers used an unmarked lorry, loaned to the force by National Highways, to identify unsafe drivers. The most serious offence saw a 38-year-old man arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after he tested positive for cannabis and cocaine.
The lorry allows officers to see into vehicles to watch drivers and record video footage of any offences.Police said 25 people were stopped for not wearing seatbelts, 20 for using mobile phones and 17 because of the vehicles' condition.Others were stopped for having insecure loads, not being in proper control of their vehicles, driving without due care, and not having insurance.Insp Jason Baxter said: "Sadly, even after 10 years of Operation Tramline, we are still detecting numerous offences of poor driving behaviours which the vast majority of our road-using community also find completely unacceptable."

Police crackdown on 'dangerous' A30 U-turns in Cornwall

Devon and Cornwall Police is targeting drivers carrying out U-turn manoeuvres at a collision hotspot in Zero South West and National Highways have installed signs along the Hayle bypass section of the A30, where "dangerous U-turns" have led to multiple crashes and one said the signs would encourage drivers to report U-turns to police as part of its Operation Snap Highways senior road safety engineer, Oliver Dash, said: "Carrying out U-turn manoeuvres on a road such as the Hayle bypass is incredibly dangerous. Although we've installed a U-turn ban, it doesn't appear to be a sufficient deterrent." A U-turn ban and associated signage was implemented in the area in 2021, after a study identified eight collisions in the area since 2014 as a result of collisions resulted in one death, with five people seriously injured and 12 with minor injuries."We're working with Vision Zero South West and Devon and Cornwall Police's Operation Snap initiative to raise awareness of the risks and encourage responsible road users to report any drivers undertaking these manoeuvres," Mr Dash with dashcam footage of drivers carrying out the manoeuvres have been urged to submit it to the police to "make the A30 safer for everyone".

Emergency repairs at Peterborough footbridge after railings theft

Emergency repairs have been carried out on a city footbridge after it was vandalised and safety railings were Highways said about 20m (65.6ft) of railings were stolen on Friday from the bridge over the A47 connecting Walton and Fullbridge Road in councillor Alex Rafiq called it "an unusual incident" which left the bridge exposed and could have been "extremely dangerous" for said authorities acted "swiftly" to ensure the bridge was secured with temporary metal barriers and traffic cones and it reopened on Monday. Rafiq, who represents Paston and Walton ward, said: "I was frantically calling the council and panicking when I found out about the bridge not being secure. "It was frightening to know the barriers were missing especially as a father of two young sons."I have now reassured residents that temporary barriers have been placed and traffic cones left along the barriers which glow up in the dark."Unfortunately a few cones have been knocked over and were thrown over the railings which we have put back now."The temporary fence is solid and secure so I do not want residents to have any concerns about crossing the bridge." A National Highways spokesperson said: "We are aware that around 20m of railings were stolen from a footbridge over the A47 on Friday."While we try and source replacements, we have installed a temporary solution to allow the bridge to reopen."The theft has also been reported as a crime to the police."
