5,000 Foreign Facebook Accounts Suddenly Active In Assam: Himanta Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, during a press conference held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur today, raised concerns about the sudden activation of thousands of suspicious Facebook accounts ahead of the upcoming elections in the state.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister stated, "Around 5,000 Facebook accounts have suddenly become active. These accounts are linked to a particular community, but most of them are operated from outside India."
He claimed that these profiles predominantly share content related to Assam's elections and promote a particular political party, while refraining from commenting on national political figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Rahul Gandhi.
"They only post hardcore Islamic fundamentalist content, often mixing it with political narratives around Assam. When not posting about Assam, they share content related to Iran, Iraq, Palestine, or religious subjects like Umrah," Mr Sarma added.
According to the Assam Chief Minister, many of these accounts are newly created and often list their location as IIT Guwahati to gain credibility.
"We checked with IIT Guwahati and found no record of such individuals. Two of the exposed accounts were traced back to Bangladesh and Pakistan. It seems they use false identities and addresses to mislead the public," he said.
The Chief Minister said his team has flagged these activities and that the individuals behind such accounts are "under the government's radar."
He also hinted at a possible local connection in Guwahati, mentioning the GS Road and Kharghuli areas, though details remained unclear.
"This has been going on for about a month now. I won't name anyone, but we are closely monitoring the situation. These people are connected through WhatsApp or Telegram groups. They become active especially after any controversial incident," he said.

Assam Cattle Preservation Act to be strictly implemented: Himanta
Guwahati, The Assam Cattle Preservation Act will be strictly enforced in all districts of the state to prevent availability and consumption of beef within a five km radius of religious places of worship, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday. ''The availability and consumption of beef during the recent Eid festival despite the ban within a 5 km radius of temples and other places of worship is a very serious matter. In this regard, we will take strict action under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021'', Sarma said at a press conference here. After the Eid Uz Zuha festival this year, it has been seen that in some areas of sensitive districts like Dhubri, Goalpara and Hojai, several attempts have been made to create disturbances by throwing body parts, particularly skulls near temples and prayer halls, he said. Sarma said that it has been observed that these have occurred near localities where beef consumption during Eid is common and all are within the restricted area of 5 km radius of places of religious worship. ''This has been in clear violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act which clearly states that beef consumption or its sale and distribution is banned within a radius of 5 km of religious places of worship. The concerned district administrations did not enforce this provision strictly leading to this situation'', he said. If people had been made aware of the 5 km restrictions, these incidents could have been avoided, he added. ''I have directed all district commissioners to strictly implement the Act and ensure that slaughter, sale or consumption of beef is banned within the restricted area'', he said. In places like Lakhimpur and Lakhipur in Goalpara district, it has been seen that these incidents have occurred in areas classified as tribal belts and blocks of Village Grazing Reserve and Professional Grazing Reserve where in many cases, people have occupied the land illegally, Sarma said. ''Even the leader of the opposition had said in the assembly that immigrants who came after a certain year cannot legally occupy or claim the land as their own. I have directed district commissioners and additional district commissioners to conduct a survey in these areas to identify those people whose families have not lived in Assam for at least three generations and prepare a list of all those people living in tribal belt, block or in VGR/PGR, particularly in the sensitive areas which will help us to take necessary legal action'', he said. On Wednesday, seven persons were arrested following the alleged recovery of three cow skulls, approximately 30 metres from a 'Namghar' , in Lakhimpur district. Recently, shoot-at-sight orders at night were issued in Dhubri where a day after the Bakrid, a cow's head was found in front of the Hanuman Temple and again the next day, another skull was found again there along with incidents of stone pelting reported. On June 8, Sarma had said that a number of cattle were allegedly slaughtered illegally at several places during the Bakrid festival and parts of the meat were thrown at multiple locations across Assam. Police have so far arrested over 60 people with over 50 in Dhubri alone in connection with illegal slaughter of cows with the intention of creating communal disturbances in the state.

Assam CM claims thousands of foreign social media accounts favour state Congress
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday alleged that more than 5,000 social media accounts, run mostly by Islamic countries, are favouring the Congress party's state unit. Addressing a press conference, Himanra Sarma claimed that accounts from 47 countries, largely from Pakistan and Bangladesh, have been focusing on the activities of a particular Assam Congress leader and the unit's actions over the past month. "It is surprising that they do not comment on or like posts by Rahul Gandhi or even the Indian National Congress. They are only focused on a particular leader and the Assam Congress," the Assam CM was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. While Sarma did not name the particular leader of the Congress's state unit, it appeared that he was referring to Gaurav Gogoi. Gogoi was appointed as the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee in the last week of May. "We are not concerned with the change in the party's leadership in the state, but this development has taken place in the last month and there must be some link," the CM said. "For the first time, there is so much foreign involvement in Assam politics in the run-up to the 2026 assembly elections," he added. These social media handles, other than Assam, also reportedly post content related to Islamic fundamentalists, including those of pro-Palestine, Iran, and Bangladesh's chief advisor Mohammad Yunus. Further, Sarma said that the central government has been informed of the issue which, he said, is of "national security". Noting that some of the 5,000 accounts are being run with their location marked as Guwahati, the Assam CM said, "We are not ruling out that some of the accounts may be from within the state." "The locations are disclosed in the accounts, and we conducted a forensic audit of those who had joined in the last month," Sarma added. He said the forensic audit found that 700 accounts are from Bangladesh, 350 from Pakistan, 246 from Saudi Arabia, 86 from Kuwait, and 35 from Afghanistan. He raised an alarm, citing concerns that over 5,000 social media accounts were opened in a month, "and they are commenting and liking posts related to Assam". The Assam CM claimed that there is also information that some people from outside have rented accommodations in two localities in Guwahati, and have connected with YouTubers and social media influencers for the same. "Surveillance is being kept on them. Fundamentalist elements have entered Assam and are active in the run-up to the elections," Sarma added. Further, the CM alleged that these social media accounts have also made inroads into some digital media organisations in the state. Sarma claimed that there also existed plans for setting up a call centre in Kolkata to carry out these activities. The Assam CM said it is also possible that these social media account holders are connected through WhatsApp and other messaging apps, as they are all from different countries and time zones. Further, Sarma claimed that Muslims from Assam, indigenous or migrants, will not post any such content. In the next stage, Sarma asserted that these social media accounts may even take shadow Hindu names like "many do to marry Hindu women". The Assam chief minister noted that Assam and the North East have always been on the international fundamentalist radar, and hardcores have always had the "unfinished agenda" of severing the 'chicken neck' to make the state a part of Bangladesh. "We are in a very critical situation and the entire matter is being looked into from the national security angle", Sarma added.
