Squid Game Season 3 Faces Backlash – Jo Yuri's Birth Scene: 'Five Minutes to Deliver a Baby?'

Time of India15 hours ago

One of the biggest OTT platform's most popular series,
Squid Game Season 3
, may have delivered high-stakes drama and emotional depth, but one scene in particular has sparked intense backlash online. In Episode 2,
Jo Yuri
's character, Kim Jun Hee, gives birth mid-game—a sequence that has left many viewers baffled, with some calling it 'unrealistic' and 'tone-deaf.'
The scene that broke suspension of disbelief
During a life-or-death challenge, Jun Hee suddenly goes into labour. With the help of fellow contestant Geum Ja (played by Kang Ae Sim), she delivers her baby in what appears to be under five minutes—without medical assistance, visible pain, or any post-birth complications.
The scene quickly went viral, with one tweet garnering over 7.5 million views, mocking the implausibility of the moment.
'Her water breaks, she gives birth, and then she's walking around like nothing happened?!' one user wrote. 'Even the baby knew when to cry and when not to. It's laughable.'
Director under fire
Much of the backlash has been directed at the show's male director, with critics accusing him of having a poor understanding of childbirth. Viewers pointed out the lack of basic medical details—no amniotic fluid, no delivery of the placenta, and no signs of postpartum fatigue.
'It's not just unrealistic—it's lazy writing,' one viewer commented. 'It shows how little the creators consulted women or medical experts.'
A narrative misstep or symbolic choice?
While some fans defended the sequence as a symbolic representation of endurance or rebirth, the majority felt it clashed with the show's otherwise gritty realism. The fact that Jun Hee is later seen jumping rope with her newborn only added fuel to the fire.
A missed opportunity?
Given Squid Game's reputation for sharp social commentary, many fans believe the scene could have been a powerful moment—had it been handled with more nuance and realism. Instead, it has become a lightning rod for criticism, with some viewers even choosing to abandon the series altogether.

Will there be Squid Game 4? All we know about Lee Jung Jae starrer's future as season 3 finale leaves fans speculating

The South Korean phenomenon, Squid Game, came to an end on June 27 with the release of season 3, which saw a never-before-seen player take home the prize of 4.56 billion KRW. It was not Lee Jung Jae's Seong Gi Hun or Im Siwan's Lee Myung Gi who were left at the last stop of the final game, but the latter's baby with Jo Yu Ri's Kim Jun Hee. As the season came to an end, with a surprise cameo from Cate Blanchett, who can be seen taking over Gong Yoo's The Salesman role following his death, questions about a Korean Season 4 have been raised; however, there are no official plans for that yet. What is Squid Game: America, and will it be next season 4 for the Korean show? Previously, it was announced that David Fincher, the man behind Fight Club, Gone Girl, and many western hits, will be taking on the English-language adaptation of the hit Korean series. While no release date has been set, it is said that the filming for the USA version of Squid Game will begin this December. It is not known whether the story will resume from where it's left off in the Korean original or whether a total remake will be done. With Cate Blanchett's cameo, both seem just as possible as the other for Squid Game: America. The creator of Squid Game, director Hwang Dong Hyuk, previously addressed plans for a spin-off based on his story. Talking at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards, he shared, "If I make a spin-off, it will be a story happening between seasons 1 and 2. There was a three years gap between seasons 1 and 2, so I want to show what they did for those times." So it seems unlikely that any of our favorite original characters will make a return in Squid Game: America, but fans of the franchise can hope that the writer goes ahead with a spin-off, revealing more about Seong Gi Hun's life after winning the prize in the first season.

Is Squid Game based on a true story? The real-life tragedy behind Netflix's hit show

While Netflix's Squid Game may be a fictional survival drama packed with deadly children's games and societal critique, its emotional core is grounded in reality. With the show's third and final season dropping on June 27, viewers might be surprised to learn that protagonist Seong Gi-hun's story was inspired by a real and violent chapter in South Korean labor history: the 2009 Ssangyong Motor Strike. Netflix's Squid Game is not based on a true story but is inspired by the 2009 Ssangyong Motor Strike, reflecting South Korea's labor history. REUTERS/Kim Soo-hyeon(REUTERS) Creator of the show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, in an interview with The New York Times, explained why the show resonated globally. Dong-hyuk told the publication that they had touched something in the zeitgeist. He said they touched on the sense of crisis weighing heavily on people, which made them relate to Gi-hun. According to a People report, in 2009, Chinese automaker SAIC, which was then the majority stakeholder in South Korea's Ssangyong Motor Company, filed for bankruptcy. In the wake of this collapse, the company announced mass layoffs, including the termination of nearly 1,000 workers at the company's Pyeongtaek plant. In response to the mass layoffs, the workers staged a 77-day sit-in, one of the fiercest labor confrontations in the recent history of Seoul. The strike ended with a brutal police crackdown involving rubber bullets, tasers, and a water shutoff. According to the People report, many workers lost their livelihoods, and in the years that followed, over 40 employees or family members died, several by suicide, due to economic hardships and societal exclusion. In the first season of Squid Game, Gi-hun is revealed to have lost his job after a violent strike at a fictional car company, Dragon Motors—a nod to Ssangyong, which translates to 'double dragon.' Reportedly, Episode 5 even depicted the police assault, reflecting the real-life suppression of protesting workers. Former Ssangyong union leader Lee Chang-kun, who was part of the actual strike, expressed mixed emotions about the show's popularity. The People report quoted Lee as saying that he felt the story of the workers was reduced to a commodity. He lamented that despite the international attention to the ordeal, it did not translate into meaningful labor reform. Though the strike offered a narrative foundation, Hwang has explicitly pointed to Japanese manga like Battle Royale and Liar Game as significant influences on the narrative. Yet the stark reality of contemporary economic disparity is ultimately the series's more potent message, the People report added.
