March Madness 2025: Bad beat for bettors as last-second 3-pointer pushes Florida-UConn over the total
Every year during March Madness, we're accustomed to buzzer-beaters and last-second finishes — but usually they relate to the outcome of the game. In the betting world, these exist in the form of bad beats — and there was a particularly awful one for some bettors during the ending of the Florida-UConn game.
With the betting total closing at 150.5 at BetMGM and other sportsbooks, those who had wagered on the game going under were in fantastic shape with the score 70-64 after Florida's Walter Clayton Jr. made a 3-pointer with 1:07 remaining in the game. But 18 points were scored over the final 40 seconds, including a meaningless-to-the-game-outcome Liam McNeeley 3-pointer at the buzzer, to push the game over the total in a 77-75 Florida win.
The Huskies, 9.5-point underdogs against No. 1 Florida, did cover the spread in a record 14th straight NCAA tournament game, although that will be little consolation for their fans. UConn played well and led throughout most of the game.

The game going over the total was a bad result at BetMGM, which reported 87% of the money wagered on the over.
One Vegas oddsmaker texted Yahoo Sports that the result was, simply, "no good."

DKNG Q1 Earnings Call: Customer-Friendly Outcomes Drive Guidance Lower Despite Product Gains
Fantasy sports and betting company DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) fell short of the market's revenue expectations in Q1 CY2025, but sales rose 19.9% year on year to $1.41 billion. The company's full-year revenue guidance of $6.3 billion at the midpoint came in 1.1% below analysts' estimates. Its non-GAAP profit of $0.12 per share was in line with analysts' consensus estimates. Is now the time to buy DKNG? Find out in our full research report (it's free). Revenue: $1.41 billion vs analyst estimates of $1.46 billion (19.9% year-on-year growth, 3.4% miss) Adjusted EPS: $0.12 vs analyst estimates of $0.12 (in line) Adjusted EBITDA: $102.6 million vs analyst estimates of $98.92 million (7.3% margin, 3.8% beat) The company dropped its revenue guidance for the full year to $6.3 billion at the midpoint from $6.45 billion, a 2.3% decrease EBITDA guidance for the full year is $850 million at the midpoint, below analyst estimates of $910.4 million Operating Margin: -3.3%, up from -11.8% in the same quarter last year Monthly Unique Payers: 4.3 million, up 900,000 year on year Market Capitalization: $17.97 billion DraftKings' first quarter performance was shaped by a combination of increased product adoption and the impact of unpredictable sports outcomes. CEO Jason Robins explained that while product enhancements led to higher sportsbook hold percentages and more efficient promotional spending, customer-friendly results during March Madness significantly reduced actual hold relative to expectations. Robins emphasized, 'If not for customer-friendly sport outcomes in March, we would be raising our fiscal year 2025 revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance.' The company also saw growth in live betting and improved efficiency in marketing, as recent acquisitions began to contribute positively to operational results. Looking forward, DraftKings' revised guidance reflects ongoing uncertainty around sports outcomes, evolving state tax and regulatory environments, and continued emphasis on product innovation. Management highlighted the company's commitment to optimizing promotional strategies and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to drive both revenue and operational efficiencies. CFO Alan Ellingson noted, 'We continue to expect sports book net revenue margin of 7% to 7.5% as we anticipate higher structural sports book hold percentage and increased promotional efficiency to offset the impacts from customer-friendly sports outcomes year-to-date.' The company expects to further integrate recent acquisitions and capitalize on advancements in live betting and AI-driven initiatives, while monitoring regulatory developments and market maturity across key states. Management attributed quarterly revenue growth and margin improvement to product-driven gains and promotional discipline, offset by unfavorable sports results and regulatory changes. Live betting acceleration: DraftKings saw a significant increase in live betting activity, with live handle surpassing 50% of total handle for the first time. This shift was attributed to recent product improvements and acquisitions, particularly in live betting technology, which management believes will continue to drive engagement and future growth. Product mix and parlay adoption: The company reported a higher mix of parlay bets, both among new and existing customers, contributing to increased sportsbook hold percentages. Management described this as a key lever for profitability and noted that customers continue using parlay products even after promotional incentives subside. Promotional spend optimization: DraftKings continued to reduce promotional reinvestments as a share of gross gaming revenue, reflecting the maturation of customer cohorts and more targeted marketing strategies. Management expects this trend to persist as newer states mature and the customer base becomes less reliant on promotions. AI integration and operational efficiency: The company has expanded its use of AI across business functions, improving both customer service and internal productivity. Management highlighted cost reductions and efficiency gains, with CEO Robins describing AI adoption as a "company-wide movement" that is reshaping how teams approach operational challenges. Regulatory and tax headwinds: Increases in state tax rates, such as in Maryland, and the exit of Jackpocket operations in certain markets negatively affected quarterly results. DraftKings is closely monitoring regulatory risks as states consider new taxes or changes that could impact profitability and competitive dynamics. DraftKings expects future performance to be driven by product innovation, operational efficiency, and market responses to regulatory and sports outcome variability. Expansion of live and in-play betting: Management believes growth in live betting, driven by technology investments and improved user experiences, will be a major contributor to handle and revenue. The company is targeting continued increases in live handle mix, inspired by higher adoption rates in more mature international markets. AI-driven operational gains: DraftKings is scaling its use of AI to enhance both customer-facing products and internal operations, aiming for efficiency improvements in areas such as customer service and risk management. Management expects these initiatives to reduce costs and support margin expansion, while also informing product development and betting models. Regulatory and tax environment: The company anticipates ongoing headwinds from state tax rate increases and evolving regulatory requirements. Management is focused on mitigating these impacts through product optimization, cost control, and advocacy to ensure a favorable operating landscape, while recognizing the risk of further tax changes and competition from illegal markets. In upcoming quarters, the StockStory team will be watching (1) the continued growth and profitability of live and in-play betting, (2) the impact of AI-driven operational efficiencies on margins and customer experience, and (3) the company's ability to navigate regulatory and tax changes across key states. Progress in integrating recent acquisitions and expanding new product offerings will also be important indicators of execution. DraftKings currently trades at a forward P/E ratio of 22.2×. 2025 U.S. Open predictions, picks, odds: Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau favorites
The first two golf majors of the year have been claimed, with Rory McIlroy winning the Masters Tournament in April and Scottie Scheffler taking the PGA Championship last month. Who will win the 2025 U.S. Open? The third major of the year is set to tee off at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, on Thursday for a record 10th time. Scheffler (+275) and McIlroy (+1400) are among the favorites to win the 2025 U.S. Open, along with reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (+750), who is looking to become the eighth golfer to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles and the first since Brooks Koepka repeated in 2018. Advertisement McIlroy won the U.S. Open in 2011, while Scheffler's best result at the tournament came in 2022 when he was the runner-up behind champion Matt Fitzpatrick. Scottie Scheffler walks to the first tee during the final round of the Memorial Tournament golf tournament on June 1, 2025. Here's everything you need to know about the 2025 U.S. Open: Predictions for 2025 U.S. Open Championship Dylan Dethier, Xander Schauffele always shows up at U.S. Open "Don't let him throw you off the scent with his first non-top-20 major finish in three-plus years or a surprisingly poor putting performance at the Memorial. If Xander can find the groove with his driver, he has as good a chance as anybody to win this thing. Don't forget: He's played eight U.S. Opens in his life, he's never finished worse than 14th, and he has six top-7s. Book this man for a win, cover your bases with a top 10." Jessica Marksbury, Scottie Scheffler continues to dominate "How can I go with any other player? Scottie is back in alpha mode, and a U.S. Open at Oakmont — golf's toughest test on the game's toughest course — will identify the most complete player as champion. That's Scottie. Third leg of the career grand slam comin' up!" Nick Piastowski, Bryson DeChambeau repeats "With high rough, give me the guy who's hitting wedges into the greens. It's hard to bet against Scottie Scheffler, but I'm predicting a DeChambeau repeat." Iain MacMillan, Sports Illustrated: Scottie Scheffler is running a one-man race "If you aren't going to bet on Scottie Scheffler, you should stick to betting the 'without Scheffler' market. We haven't seen a golfer listed with as short of odds as +280 to win a major since Tiger Woods in his prime, but in my opinion, his odds should be even shorter. Advertisement "He has won three of his last four starts, including running away with the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. Over the last six months, Scheffler has gained 0.73 true strokes per round more than any other golfer in the world. The 0.73 strokes per round gap between Scheffler and the second-ranked golfer, Bryson DeChambeau, is the same as the gap between DeChambeau and Sepp Straka." Lindy's Sports ranks Florida inside preseason top 15, Lagway a top-10 QB
Lindy's Sports ranks Florida inside preseason top 15, Lagway a top-10 QB With the college sports world shifting its attention back to football as the summer gets underway, Florida remains a preseason top-25 program, largely thanks to the hype that follows sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway. A week ago, Lindy's Sports released its highly respected preseason edition, and the Gators check in at No. 15 with a clear path to the College Football Playoff. While SEC bias might be a real thing with national media coverage of college sports, Florida's top-ranked strength of schedule and strong finish to the 2024 campaign warrant this kind of preseason rankings. Lagway is indeed one of the top signal callers in his class, and the Orange and Blue pulled off several upset wins with him under center as a relatively inexperienced true freshman. Lindy's has him ranked No. 7 among college quarterbacks entering the season, behind players such as Carson Beck (Miami), Arch Manning (Texas), and Garrett Nussmeier (LSU). The Gators will have plenty of chances to prove they belong inside the top 15, too. Lindy's ranked the three teams listed above are inside the top 10, and they're all on Florida's schedule. After starting the season with home games against LIU and South Florida, UF heads to Baton Rouge and Miami Gardens to face No. 5 LSU and No. 10 Miami in back-to-back weeks. Then it's back to The Swamp against top-ranked Texas, featuring Manning and Co. Texas A&M and Mississippi State are both outside the top 25, with the latter being the lowest-ranked SEC team at No. 84 out of 136 teams. No. 9 Georgia is next on Florida's schedule, followed by road games at Kentucky and No. 19 Ole Miss. Neither Tennessee nor Florida State is ranked inside Lindy's preseason top 25, but a lot can change between now and November.
