Kuwait set to make mark as the Asian Winter Games opens
HARBIN, China, Feb 8, (Agencies): Chinese President Xi Jinping officially opened the Ninth Asian Winter Games (Harbin 2025) in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. The event features nearly 1,500 athletes from 34 Asian countries, including a 65-member delegation from Kuwait.
The Kuwaiti athletes are competing in five sports: ice hockey, curling, snowboarding, speed skating, and figure skating.
The opening ceremony showcased a vibrant folklore performance themed "Dream of Winter, Love among Asia." Following the lighting of the cauldron and the parade of national flags, Vice-President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Timothy Tsun Ting Fok, delivered a speech welcoming the participants.
Ali Al-Merri, head of the Kuwaiti delegation, expressed gratitude for the support from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. He emphasized the Kuwait Olympic Committee's commitment to promoting sports through participation in such continental events, highlighting the significance of the Asian Winter Games as the second-largest multi-sport event in Asia after the Asian Summer Games.
Over 8,000 spectators at the Harbin International Conference, Exhibition, and Sports Center burst into cheers as Xi officially declared the Games open in the presence of visiting dignitaries including International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.
A record 34 countries and regions are competing in Harbin 2025, surpassing the previous high set at the 8th Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan in 2017. Over 1,200 athletes are participating in ice events in Harbin and snow events in Yabuli, marking an increase from the previous record of 1,147 at the Sapporo Games.
Amid roaring cheers from the venue audience, star speed skater Ning Zhongyan and skier Liu Mengting, who made history by winning the women's big air gold at the FIS Freeski World Cup in January, bore the Chinese national flag during the athletes' parade.
The Chinese delegation is composed of 257 members, including 170 athletes. Five Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic champions, Xu Mengtao, Qi Guangpu, Gao Tingyu, Fan Kexin, and Liu Shaoang headline the squad of 85 men and 85 women that cover 64 events across six disciplines.

World Boxing say ‘not correct' to have named Khelif in statement
PARIS: World Boxing on Wednesday apologized to the Algerian federation saying it had been incorrect to name boxer Imane Khelif in a statement announcing mandatory gender testing to determine the eligibility of male and female athletes wanting to take part in its competitions. The international federation said it was introducing the policy after the furor surrounding boxers including women's welterweight gold medalist Khelif at last year's Paris Olympics. World Boxing will organize the boxing competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after being granted provisional recognition by the International Olympic Committee. World Boxing said it had informed the Algerian Boxing Federation Khelif would have to undergo the test if she wanted to compete at the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands on June 5-10. But the federation rowed back on having named Khelif in their statement. 'The president of World Boxing does not think it was correct to have a named a specific athlete in a statement issued last Friday,' the body said. World Boxing, it continued, 'has written personally to the president of the Algerian Boxing Federation to offer a formal and sincere apology which acknowledges that greater effort should have been made to avoid linking the policy to any individual'. Under the new policy, all athletes over 18 that want to participate in a World Boxing owned or sanctioned competition will need to undergo a PCR, or polymerase chain reaction genetic test, to determine what sex they were at birth and their eligibility to compete. The PCR test is a laboratory technique used to detect specific genetic material, in this case the SRY gene, that reveals the presence of the Y chromosome, which is an indicator of biological sex. The test can be conducted by a nasal or mouth swab, or by taking a sample of saliva or blood. National federations will be responsible for testing and will be required to confirm the sex of their athletes when entering them into World Boxing competitions by producing certification of their chromosomal sex, as determined by a PCR test. Khelif's success at the Paris Olympics, along with that of Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, sparked a raging gender eligibility debate, with high-profile figures such as US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk weighing in. Khelif and Lin were disqualified from the International Boxing Association's 2023 world championships after the organization, the long-standing governing body of amateur boxing, said they had failed gender eligibility tests. The IOC has severed links with the IBA over financial, governance and ethical concerns. The IBA is led by the Kremlin-linked Russian Umar Kremlev. Kuwait adds four medal in Asian shooting contest
LINFEN: Kuwait shooting team added on Wednesday four medals (gold, silver and two bronze) in the ongoing Asian Shooting Championship in the Chinese city of Linfen with the participation of a large number of Asian teams, raising its balance to seven different medals in a great achievement for the sport of Kuwaiti shooting. President of the Kuwait and Arab Shooting Federations and head of the delegation participating in the tournament Engineer Duaij Khalaf Al-Otaibi expressed his wishes for Kuwait's shooters to achieve more victories in the name of Kuwait in the upcoming competitions, as the national shotgun team will participate in the Amir Cup and the World Cup, which will be held in (Italy) in the coming period. It is noteworthy that of Kuwait (skeet) shooters achieved three medals in the championship competitions (two gold and bronze) after the shooter Mansour Al-Rashidi won the gold of the individual competitions and the shooter Abdulaziz Al-Faihan won the bronze of the same competition, while shooters Mansour Al-Rashidi, Abdulaziz Al-Saad and Abdulaziz Al-Mandeel won the gold for the men's team. Kuwaiti shooters continue impressive run at Asian Shooting Championship
LINFEN, China, (KUNA): The Kuwaiti shooting team added to its impressive medal haul at the ongoing Asian Shooting Championship in Linfen, China, clinching four medals on Wednesday—one gold, one silver, and two bronze—bringing their total to seven medals so far. President of the Kuwait Shooting Sports Club and head of the delegation, Duaij Al-Otaibi, told KUNA that Abdulrahman Al-Faihan, Talal Al-Rashidi, and Nasser Al-Muqallid secured gold in the men's team competition. In the women's team event, shooters Shahd Al-Hawwal, Sara Al-Hawwal, and Reem Al-Zamanan captured silver, while Abdulrahman Al-Faihan claimed bronze in the individual competition. A bronze medal was also earned in the mixed doubles, with Nasser Al-Muqallid and Sara Al-Hawwal teaming up for the podium finish. This success follows their earlier achievement last Thursday, where Kuwait earned three medals—two gold and one bronze. On that day, shooters Mansour Al-Rashidi, Abdulaziz Al-Saad, and Abdulaziz Al-Faihan triumphed in the men's team event, while Al-Rashidi and Al-Saad took gold and bronze, respectively, in the individual competition.
