La Caisse creates the Prix La Caisse en art actuel to support mid-career artists in Québec
MONTRÉAL, June 18, 2025 /CNW/ - La Caisse announces the creation of the Prix La Caisse en art actuel to support mid-career artists in Québec. This $25,000 prize will be awarded annually to a visual artist selected by a panel of experts from the cultural sector. Given the lack of honours recognizing mid-career artists in Québec, the Prix La Caisse en art actuel is designed to encourage their long-term professional practice and artistic research, as well as to showcase their work. The selected artist must have at least 20 years of experience in creating contemporary art and have exerted significant influence in their field. They will have had to create works on their own, have peer-recognized skills and disseminate their works in a professional setting. All forms of expression in the visual arts—painting, sculpture, photography and video.—will be considered. "The launch of the Prix La Caisse en art actuel is the start of a new chapter in our commitment to contribute to the vitality of Québec's cultural community on a long-term basis. In bestowing this annual honour, La Caisse wishes to recognize talented artists and shine a light on their works - reinforcing our position as a committed player in this ecosystem," said Marie-Justine Snider, Curator of La Caisse's art collection. Candidates will be selected by an expert panel of recognized figures from the visual arts field, including Bernard Lamarche, curator of contemporary art (1960 to present) at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec; Mark Lanctôt, curator in charge of the collection at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal; and Anne-Marie St-Jean Aubre, Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Curator of Quebec and Canadian Contemporary Art (1945 to Today). The winning artist's name will be unveiled this Fall. ABOUT THE LA CAISSE COLLECTION The La Caisse Collection consists of 495 works by Québec artists. Most of the works were created between 1948 and the present day. The La Caisse Collection is designed to strengthen access to and participation in cultural life as a lever of social, economic and territorial development. The REM art program and public art projects also contribute to La Caisse's visual arts legacy. Pets Plus Us Reclaims the Skies with Silent Pet-Friendly Drone Show Featuring Portraits of Canadian Pets
Pet parents can submit a photo of their pet for a chance to be featured in a show near them TORONTO, June 18, 2025 /CNW/ -- With 67 per cent of dogs and 68 per cent of cats showing signs of fear and anxiety when they hear fireworks 1, and 70 per cent 2 of guardians sharing that concern, the need for more inclusive celebrations has never been clearer. This summer, Pets Plus Us, a leading pet insurance provider, is flipping the script—re-imagining holiday traditions through an animal's eyes and giving pet owners accessible, humane ways to celebrate. LIGHTING UP THE SKIES (QUIETLY) FOR PETS This summer, Pets Plus Us is introducing a pet-friendly silent drone show that mimics firework displays, giving back summer skies to the pets who've been left out of the fun for far too long. To make the experience truly personalized, Canadian pet owners are invited to submit a photo of their furry friend(s) for a chance to see their pet's face light up the skies as part of the drone show. "Celebration should never come at the cost of our pets' well-being," said Jamie Maxfield, Marketing Director at Pets Plus Us. "The drone show is about more than just fireworks — it's about reimagining tradition through empathy, safety, and shared joy. That same philosophy drives our approach to pet insurance: helping protect pets in every moment that matters." The pet-friendly drone show to #ReclaimTheSkies will take place in Toronto, Ontario on Monday, June 30 th, 2025, at Garrison Commons in Fort York. The show begins at 9:30pm EST, with early arrival encouraged to enjoy the sunset. For more event details and to submit a photo of your pet, visit CARING FOR CANADIAN PETS Pets Plus Us believes true inclusion means more than bringing pets along — it means creating experiences built for them. When plans start with them in mind, everyone benefits – pets are calmer, moments richer, and our bond with them grows stronger. Pet ownership in Canada is growing with 58% of households owning a dog or cat 3, yet fewer than 4% 4 of Canada's 17 million pets are insured. That gap leaves many families unprepared for surprise vet costs. Pet insurance isn't just a safety net – it's a signal that we see our pets as individual family members with real rights to comfort, accessible care, and quality of life. Made in Canada and designed for Canadians, Pets Plus Us is built to fit the needs of Canadian pets and their owners. Artist, collector turns home into gallery
Royalwood For Royalwood resident and retired Louis Riel School Division teacher Rodger Lourenzo, home is where the art is. Every June, he opens his abode to friends, former students, and the general public to experience the art he has created and collected in an evening gallery show and sale. 'This is the best time of year to showcase the art,' Lourenzo said. 'We have the perfect light streaming in.' Owing to strong interest, Lourenzo extended his event for an extra week this year, and sold 107 of the 250-300 pieces available. Photo by Tanya Misseghers Rodger Lourenzo shows off one of his graphite art pieces. 'I've been making and purchasing art for 25 years,' Lourenzo said. 'Before moving to Royalwood 10 years ago, I invited people to visit my home and let the art speak to them, without any pressure to purchase. It's a tradition I've continued that has led to making new friends and sparking joy. Art is for everyone.' Lourenzo's collection extends from Canadian to international artists in all forms – paint, print, photography, ceramics and sculpture, ranging in price from $50 into the thousands. By cutting his own glass and doing his own framing, he aims to make fine art more accessible. Lourenzo obtains pieces locally and globally through his travels. 'I look for art that tells a story, or evokes a memory, or emotion,' Lourenzo acknowledged. 'Beauty, humour, love, longing, sadness, contradiction, majesty, each one moves me.' Lourenzo has several of his own graphite drawings available to purchase. 'I layer the different weights of pencil as though I'm building the image one cell at a time. Tap, tap, tap, creating the depth of life that I see.' Mondays A weekly look at news and events that matter in your communities. Inspired by the nearby Bois-des-esprits, Lourenzo plans on expanding into photography. 'The marshes and the retention ponds in Royalwood are incredible for wildlife,' he said. 'Even in my own backyard, I've observed more than 30 species of birds, including ducks. I allow myself to be open to all mediums – watercolour, sculpture, pencil – it's about what I'm conceiving.' Although this year's show and sale ended June 8, Lourenzo welcomes anyone searching for a special piece to complete their home or cottage. 'If you have a feeling you want to create, I can help you choose. It just takes one little gem to make your space complete. I want people to be surrounded by art that they love.'
