ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish-led forces on Thursday captured an Islamic State (ISIS) leader in eastern Syria with the help of the United States army, the two allies announced on Saturday.
The US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on Saturday that they assisted the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to conduct a raid and capture Salah Mohammed al-Abdullah, 'an ISIS cell leader,' near the town of al-Shuhayl in Deir ez-Zor province.
'During the operation, the SDF recovered multiple weapons to include a 12.7mm (.50 cal) Sniper rifle, an AK-47, hand grenades, and various weapons and ammunition,' said CENTCOM, which oversees US troops in the Middle East.
'The SDF-led operation is part of the ongoing Defeat-ISIS campaign to degrade ISIS networks and prevent the resurgence of the terrorist group in the region. CENTCOM forces enabled SDF during the operation by providing technical support and intelligence,' it added.
The SDF thanked CENTCOM for their support in the operation.
'These joint operations increase the level of security in the region and prevent ISIS cells from harming residents. Our forces affirm their firm and steadfast commitment to pursuing and eliminating ISIS cells through the strong partnership with the international coalition forces,' said the SDF.
ISIS, which was territorially defeated in 2019, has recently sought to gain ground, taking advantage of the situation after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. The SDF, which controls northeast Syria (Rojava), has fought to prevent the militants from reestablishing their presence in the evolving security landscape.
The SDF said in January that they carried out nearly 100 operations against ISIS in 2024, capturing more than 270 suspects and eliminating several of its high-ranking leaders.
The SDF has warned that their ability to combat ISIS in the east of the country is being undermined by an offensive by Turkey and its allied militias in the north who are trying to take control of a key bridge and dam on the Euphrates River in an area that is under SDF control.

Israel arrests Hamas suspects in Southwest Syria

Shafaq News/ Israeli troops arrested several Hamas operatives in southwestern Syria, the Israeli military announced on Thursday. Carried out overnight, the raid targeted the town of Beit Jinn, about 50 kilometers southwest of Damascus, where Hamas members were allegedly planning attacks on Israeli troops in Syria, according to the military. Firearms and ammunition were seized, and the suspects were transferred to Israel for interrogation. Hamas has yet to comment on the incident. Syria's Interior Ministry rejected Israel's claims, stating that those arrested were civilians from the area. A ministry spokesperson told Reuters that seven people were detained and one person was killed by Israeli fire. Tel Aviv has warned that Damascus could serve as a base for Hamas-style attacks, referring to the October 7 assault, since which Israel has killed more than 54,981 Palestinians—mostly women and children. Following the collapse of Bashar Al-Assad's regime on December 8, 2024, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes, destroying missile depots, radar systems, and chemical weapons facilities, citing concerns about alleged security threats emanating from Syria under its new government. Israeli forces have also launched ground incursions into southern Syria, seizing the demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights, a move seen as a violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. Troops have also fortified positions on Mount Hermon, signaling a push for long-term control.

US evacuates +700 from Iraqi Embassy as Iran-Israel tensions mount

Shafaq News/ Over 700 Americans have been evacuated from the US Embassy in Baghdad, an Iraqi security source told Shafaq News on Thursday, as Washington ramps up precautionary measures in response to growing instability in the Middle East. The source explained that the departures—mostly diplomats, staff, and nationals—continued into early Thursday, with expectations that senior US military figures could also be pulled out soon. As part of the US measures, earlier reports indicated that the US is preparing a partial evacuation of its embassy in Iraq. A US Defense official told Shafaq News that CENTCOM continues to monitor the situation, prioritizing the safety of American service members and their families. Washington has also begun relocating personnel across several missions in the region. President Donald Trump confirmed the precautionary moves, citing security risks. 'It could be a dangerous place,' he noted. The evacuation comes amid intensified Israeli preparations for a possible military strike on Iran, according to US intelligence. A 'friendly' regional state had warned Tehran of a potential Israeli strike, a senior Iranian official revealed to Reuters on Thursday. Iranian officials responded with sharp rhetoric. Quds Force Commander General Esmail Qaani said Iran does not seek war but warned that 'no one dares to start one against us.' Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh cautioned that US forces in the region would become targets. 'Their presence would become unsustainable in host countries,' he said.

Iraqi armed group threatens US with suicide attacks over Iran standoff

Shafaq News/ Waves of suicide attackers will be dispatched to target US interests if war breaks out between Iran and the United States, warned Abu Alaa al-Walai, Secretary-General of Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada, an Iran-aligned Iraqi Shiite armed group. In a statement widely circulated on social media, al-Walai declared, 'Hundreds of martyrdom-seekers will be ready. The United States' pride will be humiliated again, just as it was the first time in Iraq when it left in disgrace.' He added, 'This time, the US and its agents will have no place left in the Middle East. Regimes that once relied on the occupation [the US] will fall, and victory will belong to God and His faithful servants.' The threats come as regional tensions escalate following Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh's warning that Iran would target US bases in the region if a conflict erupts over nuclear negotiations. In response to the growing risks, the US Department of Defense confirmed yesterday that it has authorized the voluntary departure of military families from multiple locations under the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which includes Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries. 'The safety and security of our service members and their families remain a top priority,' a Pentagon official told Shafaq News. 'CENTCOM continues to monitor rising tensions in the region.'
