Couple mauled to death by grizzly bear caught on camera
WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard were eaten alive by the full-size adult bear while waiting to leave their campsite.
A couple attempting to make friends with wild grizzly bears were viciously mauled to death after making a fatal mistake.
Timothy Treadwell, 46, and his partner Amie Huguenard, 37, were spending time with the bears in Katmai National Park, Alaska, which Timothy, a former heroin addict, had done every summer for 13 years.
Despite concerns from friends and family, he named the creatures he encountered and believed he was at one with them, playing with, talking to, and even touching them. Adult grizzly bears can weigh 700lbs (317kg) and stand at a height of up to eight to nine feet (2.4 to 2.7 metres) on their hind legs.
In October 2003, the couple were preparing to leave Alaska for the winter and were preparing a snack as they waited in their tent for a seaplane taxi to pick them up when tragedy struck. Cheese and sausage was later found in a bag in their tent, as well as an open bag of crisps and a bar of chocolate, the Mirror reports.
The horrifying minutes that followed were captured on Timothy's camera after all his earlier interactions with the bears. The footage, recovered after their deaths, was the subject of award-winning documentary The Grizzly Man by Werner Herzog, who said the disturbing audio should be deleted so nobody else has to hear it.
The lens was left on the camera, but a terrified Amie can be heard asking if the bear is still out there before Timothy shouts: "Get out here! I'm getting killed out here!"
The tent zipper can be heard as she rushes outside and calls to him to "play dead", which works at first, as it releases its grip on him before apparently clamping its jaws around his head and pulling him away.
He frantically calls for her to "hit the bear" as she tells him to "fight back" before lunging for it with a frying pan.
The bear remains chillingly silent, with Timothy's shouts becoming moans before Amy panics and lets out several blood-curdling screams.
Air taxi pilot Willy Fulton was among the first people on scene after the horrific attack, and later said he knew straight away what had happened when he arrived to collect them.
With no sign of the couple, he instead saw the "meanest looking bear" sitting on a pile of human remains, gnawing at a ribcage. Their tents were found ruined, with their untouched snack lying on the ground. Outside one tent was a mound of grass, mud, twigs and remains, with a park ranger finding fingers and an arm sticking out of it.
Nearby they discovered what was left of Timothy's head connected to a small section of his spine, and his right arm with his watch still attached.

After the 1,000-pound bear, a 28-year-old male weighing 1,000lbs was shot dead, investigators recovered the equivalent of four bin bags full of human remains from its stomach. It is said to have found feeding difficult that season due to his age and broken teeth.
According to Willy who was also stalked by the bear before it was killed, Timothy had failed to befriend it. Amie had also admitted to friends before the trip she was scared of them and believed her partner was "hellbent on destruction".
She told him this would be her last camping trip, and she had a new job lined up back in California.
In a heartbreaking twist, it was Timothy's own over-confidence that caused their deaths. Food was scarce that season, and he had been warned the bears were more aggressive than usual. They need to put on a lot of weight before hibernating for the winter, according to the report from the US National Parks Service.
Investigating rangers wrote: "Treadwell's pattern of occupying prime feeding sites where bears aggregate along the Katmai Coast is likely to have contributed to his decision to camp at Kaflia Lake during a time of year when bears were fiercely competing for food sources.
"It is possible that a bear investigated the camp in part due to the food found in the sleeping tent, and that the fatal confrontation resulted as a consequence of Treadwell's history of approaching bears and allowing bears to approach him within a few feet."
The report concluded: "The pattern of behavior exhibited by Treadwell appeared to a result of his opinion that he had established a special relationship with bears in the area of the camp. This pattern of behavior is well documented on video taken by Treadwell and presented to the public by several national media outlets."

Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner writes chilling letter from jail
Christian Brueckner, who is currently serving time for raping a woman in 2005, wrote a sick letter from his jail cell mocking cops for their inability to find a body The prime suspect in the Madeleine McCan n case, Christian Brueckner, has penned a disturbing letter from prison asserting that evidence against him will never be found. The convicted German sex offender, who is currently incarcerated for raping an elderly woman, taunted authorities in his appalling correspondence by highlighting the absence of a body. The repugnant letter stated: "Is there a body? No, no no." These haunting words have come to light following the decision by German police to halt their intensified search near Praia da Luz, where the young girl was last seen nearly two decades ago. At the time of Madeleine's disappearance, the suspect and known sexual predator resided in the vicinity. This week saw a joint effort by German and Portuguese law enforcement to comb through properties and lands associated with Brueckner, as he is set to complete his sentence this coming September. Detectives are reportedly convinced that the paedophile abducted the three year old and are eager to establish this before his potential release – despite his denials of any involvement, reports the Mirror. A sinister letter authored by 48 year old Brueckner has been disclosed by The Sun, wherein he boldly claims the lack of incriminating evidence. He provocatively questions whether his DNA or any trace of the child has ever been detected at the crime scene or in his vehicle. He penned: "Are there other traces/ DNA carriers of the injured party in my possession? Photos? And, not to forget, is there a body/corpse? All no, no no." He continued by saying the allegations against him "will not hold up and that the investigation will be dropped". In his correspondence, Brueckner claimed the allegations were founded on "purchased witnesses", yet he professed confidence in the German judiciary, asserting his conviction for her disappearance was unlikely. Brueckner added: "Now, my path is paved with misjudgements, so to speak, but from now on the whole world is watching. Not even the Braunschweig regional court will now dare to make an obvious misjudgement." These statements emerged just one day after investigators discontinued their latest search due to unsuccessful efforts in uncovering any substantive evidence or hints. The operation commenced on Tuesday, June 3, examining over 20 parcels of land towards the east of Praia da Luz - including a dwelling where Brueckner purportedly resided when Madeleine disappeared. The sex offender is also said to have alternated between living in his vehicle and camping while in the south of Portugal. During the searches, animal remains and fragments of adult attire were unearthed, as reported on Portuguese television. At this stage, officials have not given a comprehensive account regarding these findings. During the three-day search, diggers and ground-penetrating radars were utilised, but it remains uncertain whether any discovered items will be sent to Germany for additional examination.

Inside abandoned farm buildings where cops held new search for Madeleine McCann
A new search took place for Madeleine McCann near to where she disappeared in Praia da Luz in 2007 and images taken by the Mirror show inside the abandoned farm buildings where search teams scoured through thick scrubland and empty buildings. German and Portuguese investigators wound down the operation in Atalaia, near Lagos, Portugal, on Thursday, after three days of searching scrubland and abandoned structures. Their efforts focused on a 120-acre stretch of land, using equipment such as chainsaws, diggers and a ground-penetrating radar. The operation comes 18 years after three-year-old Madeleine disappeared from nearby Praia da Luz while on holiday with her family in 2007. But it was called off with no signs that the police had made any significant discoveries, although we will now have to wait to see what they have found. They spent the first two days of the search focusing on one particular derelict building, using ground-penetrating radar on the cobbled ground after clearing the area of debris and vegetation using a digger and chainsaws. Then on the final day personnel could be seen holding pitchforks as they combed stretches of land. Pick-axes and shovels were used to dig some of the undergrowth and a digger was again used to remove rubble from one of the abandoned structures at the site. German authorities requested the search as part of their continued attempts to source evidence to implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought.

Boy 'gang raped by classmates on Spain school trip' before being blackmailed
The sickening attack was said to be the culmination of severe bullying at school. A teenage boy was allegedly gang raped by five of his classmates during a school trip, leaving him in a catatonic state. The victim, now 16, was just 13 years old when the horror incident occurred during the sports trip to Malaga, Spain. He was forced to keep quiet about the abuse he suffered out of fear the group would target his younger brother. The bullying had started at his school in Valencia, with the youths, three of them under 14 at the time, mocking his acne and glasses and excluding him from social activities. Things spiralled into the alleged attack in March 2022. He is said to have been ambushed in a hotel corridor before being forced into a bathroom and locked in, while some members of the gang raped him while the others encouraged them, the Mirror reports. According to a reconstruction of the sickening turn of events, some of those involved had said: "let him suffer, let him suffer, I want to see him suffer." The teen was reportedly blackmailed into keeping quiet while suffering humiliation every day, and received 300 malicious phone calls from one of the perpetrators, with more threats sent via social media. He endured it for another two months before collapsing in his mother's arms and falling into a catatonic state. The trauma is said to have caused amnesia, which he has since sought help for from a psychologist. Spanish media reported that he also suffers from "chronic post-traumatic stress disorder with severe episodes of dissociative amnesia". Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! He was taken to hospital, and admitted a further three times over 35 days. The psychologist raised the alarm, reporting the alleged incident and abuse to the boy's school and the police. The teen was able to remember his alleged attackers' names in his first appointment with the psychologist, but could not recall all the details. Two years later, one person was charged in Valencia's Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, and could face 15 months locked up if found guilty. The others said to be involved were either too young to be charged with a criminal offence, or their involvement has not yet been proven. According to MailOnline, a teacher at the victim's school said: "Everyone at school knows a student was raped. The principal banned trips and overnight activities outside of Valencia after the complaint, ten children in the same grade left the school, and the members of the parent-teacher association resigned."
