Harvey Elliott hopes knee-slide celebration knock will not rule him out of final

Harvey Elliott hopes knee-slide celebration knock will not rule him out of final

Leader Livea day ago

Elliott scored twice as the Young Lions beat Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-final in Bratislava.
The Liverpool midfielder attempted a knee slide after he opened the scoring just after the hour, but he got stuck in the dry conditions.
He played on through the pain and moved England to one win away from becoming back-to-back champions when scored an 86th-minute winner after Noah Ohio levelled for the Dutch.
'I don't know what I've done to my knee, but it's bloody hurting,' he told Channel 4. 'So hopefully it's nothing too silly. It's a silly decision from me, to be honest, but it's just one of them, live in the moment.
'You do these things, but I forgot the pitch was ridiculously dry and it is the price I have got to pay.'
England will play Germany or France in the final on Saturday where they will aim to defend the crown they won two years ago.
'It's amazing,' Elliott added. 'A really tough game, but bloody hell, to win it, it's incredible.

'I can't put it words. Another final, I know I keep saying it, but we need to rest, recover and go again, because it's not over yet.
'Tonight was another amazing experience, really tough conditions once again. But the way the lads dug deep, I think we deserve this final. It's just about recovering, resting and going again.
'It's been really tough preparation wise. We had many players that had to drop out because of the Club World Cup, transfers and things like that.
'It's just one last push and hopefully we can be crowned champions again.'
Boss Lee Carsley, who is aiming to follow in Dave Sexton's footsteps of winning the tournament twice, declared the victory 'outstanding'.
'The team were outstanding. The way we started the game was exciting and disappointing to come in at half-time without scoring,' he told Channel 4.
'Second half we played with real resilience. We stood up and got over the line. We can really look forward to the final.
'Harvey Elliott and Charlie Cresswell didn't play a lot of minutes in the last campaign. We knew how important they would be – they have taken that on board, the responsibility of driving the rest of the squad.
'Harvey has been outstanding. He is one of many who have stood up. They're developing as a team and a squad. I think this team is outstanding.'

England will handle U21 final pressure

Defender Charlie Cresswell has backed England Under-21s to handle the Euro 2025 pressure and ease 59 years of Toulouse centre-back is chasing his second European title after lifting the trophy two years ago. The Young Lions face Germany in Saturday's final after beating the Netherlands 2-1 in senior side have not won a trophy since the World Cup in 1966 and Cresswell believes the U21s can shake off any final pain."The seniors have done a great job but playing for England - it's not easy and people think England are going to steamroll most countries," said the 22-year-old. "We're winning, yes, but there's a pressure that comes with playing for England and it's how you handle that pressure."I know you're playing for your country but it's just another game of football. It's how you handle that pressure individually and collectively. Everyone's different."We've got to focus on ourselves because we've got belief in this team and a resilience I don't think anyone else in the tournament has. We believe in ourselves and I'm sure we'll get the job done."Harvey Elliott is the only other member of the title-winning squad of two years Leeds defender Cresswell, who scored in England's opening 3-1 win over the Czech Republic, has memories of watching the national side fail at major tournaments and wants to help erase those memories."I was brought up with England always a massive part of my childhood. I'd go to the local pub and I'd be watching the first team with all my mates, my dad's mates, and it would be like a big deal," said Cresswell, whose father Richard is a former Leeds United, Preston and Sheffield United striker."[When England go out] I'm in the pub, got my dad's mates all crying in the pub, and I'm sat there thinking 'oh no'."But it's what it's meant to be like. It's the sport we love; it's the country we're from. It's so supposed to be like that."So for me every time I pull on an England shirt it feels like an honour - a huge honour. I'm immensely proud that I get to do this. For me to go out there and give my everything, it's the least I can do."

Chelsea youngster Tyrique George insists he has NO concerns over his future amid Jamie Gittens interest

Tyrique George is practically a collector's item at Chelsea – a 19-year-old from their Cobham production line who cracked first team football without needing any loans. Reece James, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount, Dominic Solanke, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham – we could go on – they all went elsewhere for the experience. But not George. Permanently promoted midway through last season, he went straight from the Under 21s into Enzo Maresca 's side, and scored the third goal in their 3-0 Club World Cup win over ES Tunis as they reached the last 16 here in the United States. As the softly-spoken teenager tells us while standing beside their training pitch in Philadelphia, he is not too bothered by the talk of them signing another left winger such as Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens. Nor does he get bogged down by the fact that he represents pure profit in a PSR world. While he describes himself as 'reserved', George backs himself to overcome the odds further, not only by staying at Chelsea for the foreseeable but by forcing his way into the line-up as 'one of their own'. 'I'm not too sure how I did it,' he says on featuring for Chelsea's seniors. 'I just worked hard, every day in training, trying to show that I want to play. I've just got my chops. 'I've heard it a few times (the fans singing how he is one their own). It means so much. Really. 'When they sing my name, you feel tingles in your body, it's weird. I just get so happy.' Asked whether he is concerned that homegrown footballers can be seen as assets, he replies: 'I'm not really focused on what's going on elsewhere. 'When you're at Chelsea, you just want to play. There's always going to be competition whether they do sign one (a left winger) or not. 'I'm always ready to learn from them. I learn from all the forward players.' George grew up in Camden – don't worry, he insists he doesn't support Arsenal – and was spied by a Chelsea scout at the age of eight. Tyrique George credits the support of his mother with helping him make the grade at Chelsea At 12 years-old, on their recommendation, he moved to South Croydon to attend Royal Russell School. Going from one area of London to another may not sound like too grand of a leap, but for a kid, it is another world. He credits his mum, Anita, with helping him fulfil his dream in becoming a professional footballer. 'It was a tough move,' he recalls. 'I was emotional, if I'm being honest. 'All my friends were in north London. I didn't really want to move to South Croydon. 'Basically, my whole life was in Camden. 'But it was a decision I had to make for my career. I had that self-belief. 'My family backed me as well so it gave me that confidence to take that step. I could have stayed but I chose to leave. Had George not scored away to Fulham, Chelsea might not have Champions League football 'It was closer to Cobham. I think it was worth it. 'I used to get the train with my mum from Camden to Cobham, which was really long. 'After school, there and back. I've got no clue what lines we took. 'I'd just get on the train with mum. She put in all those hours for me. She didn't have to do it. 'She took me to training after she'd finished work, there and back, tired. She's a teacher. 'Training would be an hour and a half. We'd get back late, but it was worth it.' Having won Chelsea's academy player of the season for 2024-25, George feels as if he is now repaying his mum with the leaps he is taking. 'Of course I'm proud, but I don't really take the time to think about it, just because everything's so fast-paced,' he says. 'I'm happy for myself. I just want to keep growing and keep playing and see where it takes me – hopefully to a really high level.' It has taken him to Chelsea's first team at 19 years-old thus far, and had he not scored his stupendous late strike away at Fulham in April, his club may have never made it into the Champions League.

Paddy Power offer: Back Juventus at 60/1 or Man City at 40/1 at Club World Cup

Paddy Power is offering new customers odds huge enhanced offer when backing the winner in this Club World Cup showdown between Juventus and Manchester City Paddy Power is getting in on the Club World Cup action as Manchester City set to face Juventus with both sides already set for the round of 16 ahead of their final group stage match. New customers can back the Old Lady to beat Pep Guardiola's side at 60/1 enhanced odds or back the favourites City to win at 40/1. Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola's leadership, face a formidable opponent in Juventus - arguably their toughest challenge in the group stage. Yet, they stand as the only team in the tournament who have yet to let in a goal. Their journey so far has seen them triumph with 2-0 and 6-0 victories in their initial games. Their winning streak began with a win against Wydad Casablanca from Morocco in Philadelphia. This was followed by a decisive 6-0 victory over Al Ain from the UAE in Atlanta. These successes propelled the Citizens into the Club World Cup's Round of 16, even with a game left to play. Juventus are also Florida-bound, having locked down their spot in the last 16 after back-to-back victories at the start of their Club World Cup journey. A draw would be enough for them to clinch the title of Group G winners and potentially steer clear of a Round of 16 face-off with five-time champions Real Madrid. Igor Tudor, former Juventus player and current manager since March end, has an impressive record with only one loss out of 11 games since taking charge. The club is currently on a seven-match unbeaten run and has secured victories in their last four games.
