Daily Briefing: Murder in Meghalaya

Good morning, Tensions are flaring in Trumpland — again. Protests have swept across the US following a wave of anti-immigration raids under the Trump administration. The demonstrations began Friday in Los Angeles and escalated through the weekend, turning violent with clashes, dozens of arrests, property damage, and even the arson of self-driving Waymo cars. By Monday, the protests had entered their fourth day and spread to cities along both coasts. In a show of force, President Trump deployed 2,000 additional National Guard troops to California, doubling the earlier deployment, and sent in active-duty Marines. California has sued the federal government, calling the troop presence illegal. Trump has labelled the protesters 'insurrectionists,' as his administration faces its most intense backlash yet over immigration policy. On that note, let's get to today's edition. Last week, this edition spoke about the curious murder case in Meghalaya. On May 23, a newlywed couple, Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, went missing just a day into their honeymoon. On June 2, the police found Raja's body deep inside a gorge, while Sonam remained missing. Plot twist: A week later, the case has taken an unexpected turn. The police have arrested a 21-year-old Raj Kushwaha, suspected of conspiring with Sonam to kill her husband. Kushwaha was arrested in Indore, along with three other assailants hired to carry out the crime. Sonam, meanwhile, surrendered to the police in Uttar Pradesh. Zoom in: According to investigators, the Kushwaha and Sonam met at a plywood factory owned by Sonam's family, where both once worked. The plan to kill Raja was ostensibly hatched just days after the wedding. While Sonam's family remains in disbelief, Raja's mother claims her daughter-in-law planned the honeymoon, took Rs 9 lakh from him, and convinced him to carry expensive jewellery. Police are now probing those allegations. The politics: The case took on wider implications with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma demanding an apology from those who tried to paint the Northeastern state in a bad light following the murder. In an interview with The Indian Express, Sangma asserted that Meghalaya remains a safe place for tourists. Countdown begins: The launch of the Axiom-4 mission, set to carry Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla to space, was delayed by a day due to bad weather conditions. The lift-off is now set for Wednesday, 5.30 pm (IST). Shukla will be the first Indian to go to the International Space Station (ISS) and earn crucial experience for India's own Gaganyaan (human spaceflight) mission. Hence, the Axiom-4 mission carries significance for India's space ambitions. It will allow India to carry out experiments in space, tailored to its needs, such as effects of space on moong dal, micro algae and so on. Astrophysicist Somak Raychaudhury explains in detail. How did India get a seat on the Axiom mission? Closer collaboration with the US and the signing of the Artemis Accords paved the way. Know all about it. 🎧 For more on Shukla's mission, tune in to today's '3 Things' podcast episode. Push back: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has invoked a 1950 Act to allow district collectors to 'push back' anyone they prima facie find to be foreigners into Bangladesh — without going through the state's existing system of Foreigners Tribunals. 'Impeach': Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar is likely to form an inquiry panel to look into the hate speech allegations against Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court. Opposition MPs have submitted a representation with 55 signatures to bring an impeachment motion against the judge to Dhankhar. Fast-track: An 11.2 gigawatt hydropower project on the Siang river in Arunachal Pradesh is facing opposition from villagers, who are likely to be displaced. State-owned hydropower developer NHPC Ltd is working with stakeholders to 'expedite' progress and finalise the project site, sources have told The Indian Express. Capital Column: Deputy Editor Liz Mathew speaks to BJP leaders on the party's prospects as the first year of Modi 3.0 comes to an end. While the BJP has been buoyed by state election victories and the passage of certain legislation, challenges remain, such as stagnant FDI, the indecisive ally, JD(U), and roadblocks to the party's campaign in the South. T20 for the win: Former foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, makes a case for an India-led bloc to strengthen its fight against terrorism. Rao proposes a dedicated alliance of 20 countries, called T20 (Twenty Against Terrorism), that would help each other coordinate in real-time, share intelligence, build capacity and bring the Global South perspective to the forefront. Taylor Swift gets restraining order against LA stalker who ‘believes' she's the mother of his child: ‘Fear of harm'

Taylor Swift has been granted a restraining order against her Los Angeles stalker, who 'believes' she's the mother of his child. The pop star said she has a 'fear of imminent harm' because of him. The stalker, Brian Jason Wagner, has allegedly visited her Los Angeles home multiple times and has sent threats to the singer's staff via email. In a restraining order filed on Friday, according to a legal filing obtained by Page Six, Swift said that Wagner made various statements about living at her LA property, 'being in a relationship with me … believing I am the mother of his son … [and] needing to see me in person'. Claiming that all of it was 'untrue and disconnected from reality,' the singer said Wagner first stopped by her Los Angeles home in 2024 and returned several times that July. According to the legal filing, Wagner was carrying a glass bottle on at least one of the occasions in July 2024 'that could have been used as a weapon'. The Grammy winner also claimed that the stalker stopped by her home in May 2025, stating he 'was there checking on a friend (again, this is entirely untrue).' The singer's filing also said that her security team has uncovered that Wagner was once in prison and had allegedly written lengthy jail cell letters to her with 'completely fabricated stories about his involvement in [her] personal life.' They said he wrote 'about his infatuation with [her], and a romantic relationship with [her] (which does not exist).' The filing states that Wagner allegedly found a way to put the singer's address on his driver's license and attempted to send his mail to her home. Taylor Swift reiterated that she has 'no relationship with Wagner' and said she has 'never met nor communicated with him.' The temporary restraining order was granted on Monday and will expire on June 30.

The pop superstar filed for—and was granted—a temporary restraining order against Brian Jason Wagner, who allegedly believes Swift is the mother of his child and has visited her Los Angeles home multiple times. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce respond to growing safety concerns amid disturbing fan behavior In her legal statement, Taylor Swift emphasized the disturbing nature of Wagner's claims: he had 'made various statements about living at my property,' claimed to be 'in a relationship with me,' and insisted she was 'the mother of his son,' all of which Swift described as 'untrue and disconnected from reality.' She added, 'I have no relationship with Mr. Wagner and I have never met nor communicated with him,' further revealing that she has a 'fear of imminent harm. ' Court documents state that Wagner first appeared at Swift's L.A. property in 2024 and returned multiple times, most recently in May 2025. Security teams uncovered that he had previously been in prison and had sent the singer long, handwritten letters from his jail cell, detailing fantasies of a relationship that never existed. Wagner even went so far as to include Swift's home address on his driver's license. The court has granted a temporary restraining order, valid through June 30, in an effort to protect Swift from further encounters.
