
Outcry among lawmakers as Hong Kong Ombudsman removes years of archived reports
The Office of the Ombudsman will only permit public access to its archived reports through written requests starting on Tuesday, following the recent removal of years' worth of records from its shelves, which sparked criticism from some lawmakers.
The watchdog of government authorities announced on Monday it had removed investigation reports and content it deemed 'no longer to reflect the current situation' and had only retained reports from the past three years.
It said the public could apply for information not available on the Ombudsman's website by completing a form, applications which the office would handle in accordance with the Ombudsman Ordinance.
During a website update in 2022, the Office removed what it termed obsolete investigation reports and kept reports from the previous 10 years.
However, the duration of records retained during a recent update of the website was shortened to three years. This means that investigation reports published before April 2023 were removed.
'After a thorough review, the Office has removed investigation reports and content that no longer reflect the current situation, retaining only those from the past three years,' it said. 'The update can also prevent the website from being inundated with obsolete data and hindering public access to and search for required information.'
It claimed that all investigation reports and files were preserved for the long term and were not destroyed during the recent update of the website.

'The incident shows two major flaws of the government,' said Sonny Lo Shiu-hing, a veteran political commentator and observer of the politics of Hong Kong and Macau. 'It was slow in response and it failed to name the cause, thus it was unable to provide accountability.'

China hoping for ‘healthy and stable' relations with Canada after Li-Carney call
China and Canada have agreed to work to 'reset relations' in a phone call between Premier Li Qiang and Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday. It was the two sides' first discussion since Carney took office in March and comes after both have repeatedly clashed with the United States.

Man arrested in Hong Kong for impersonating police, government officials in 3 scams
Hong Kong authorities have arrested a 57-year-old man for allegedly scamming three victims out of HK$310,000 (US$39,500) by pretending to be a police officer or government officials while claiming he could help them buy concert tickets and mobile phones at discounted prices through his contacts. Advertisement Police said on Thursday they received reports from two of the three victims last month, who handed over around HK$11,000 to the suspect before losing contact with him. A broader investigation showed the same man had conned another victim out of HK$300,000 last April. Police apprehended the suspect at a hotel in Hung Hom on Tuesday. During the arrest, officers seized the clothes he had allegedly worn when committing his crimes, along with five fake foreign passports, five stacks of counterfeit euro banknotes, a few suspected fake gold bars, gold chains, and watches. A Correctional Services Department hat and three mobile phones were also confiscated. Advertisement The suspect was charged with counts of impersonating a police officer, impersonating a public official, obtaining property by deception, possession of counterfeit banknotes and possession of false documents. The case will be mentioned at Kowloon City Court on Friday.
