Broughty Ferry restaurant opens with new name after hotel firm's legal letter

A new Mediterranean restaurant has opened in the former Gulistan House in Broughty Ferry – but has had to change its name after a legal letter from an Edinburgh hotel firm.
Iftikhar Ahmed has transformed the historic building on Queen Street into a new restaurant, which opened its doors for the first time on Friday.
He had planned to open the venue under the name Le Monde, meaning 'the world', with his daughter Aaisha Naseer.
However, just days before opening, the pair received a letter from London-based law firm Venner Shipley acting on behalf of its client Glendola, to highlight the fact that Le Monde is trademarked.
Hospitality company Glendola owns venues including Waxy O'Connor's in Glasgow and the Le Monde Hotel in Edinburgh.
Iftikhar says he was 'surprised' by the news that the phrase had been trademarked.
The 66-year-old said: 'We had everything organised under Le Monde and have had to change it all – it did take us by surprise.
'We received a letter from the company's law firm, and I had my solicitor look at it, and somehow they have managed to trademark 'the world' (translated as Le Monde).
'The restaurant will now be called 1876 Dundee, which is when the building was built.
'We were supposed to advertise heavily last week, but had to stop because I didn't want to be taken to court.
'We have to play by the rules.
'The extra expense of all the new signage has been around £10,000, but it is what it is.
'I certainly didn't want to step on anyone's toes or intend for this to happen, and want to apologise for the confusion it may have caused.
'We all want to move past this and are excited to welcome customers into the restaurant.'
The restaurant had a soft launch on Friday night, and Iftikhar says the opening weekend was promising, despite a lack of social media announcements.
The businessman previously told The Courier that 1876 Dundee will serve predominantly Mediterranean cuisine and Sunday roasts.
He said: 'The menu will consist of a lot of meat, and lots of seafood ranging from lobsters and oysters all the way to salmon steaks, seabass and langoustine.
'We'll also be doing Sunday roasts. The hope is to have something for everyone.'
When approached for comment by The Courier, Glendola did not respond.
However, law firm Venner Shipley said: 'Our client would prefer no response.'

M&S food sales growth collapses after cyber attack

Rapid growth at Marks & Spencer's food business has ground to a halt after the retailer was struck by a devastating cyber attack that left shelves empty. New figures seen by The Telegraph show that spending in M&S's food halls rose by 0.8pc in the four weeks to May 17 compared with a year earlier. The data covered a period when the retailer was in the initial throes of the hack. It marks a major slowdown from the rampant growth experienced by the retailer over the past year. According to the unpublished figures from analysts at NIQ, grocery spending at M&S had been up by 11pc in the 12 months to May 17. It has consistently ranked among the fastest-growing supermarkets in recent months. The NIQ data showed M&S sold fewer items in the four weeks to May 17 compared with the same period last year and its market share slipped to 3.3pc, compared with 3.6pc in the year as a whole. M&S slipped below Waitrose in the ranks of the largest grocers as a result, having overtaken the retailer for the first time in November. Previous figures had suggested M&S had escaped a major hit from the cyber attack. Separate data from Kantar recently suggested that M&S grocery sales rose by 8pc in the four weeks to May 18 and by 12.3pc in the 12 weeks to the same date. Kantar uses a different methodology, which does not include grocery sales from delivery apps such as Deliveroo. The NIQ survey data shed fresh light on the effect of the cyber attack that has crippled M&S. M&S was forced to halt online orders in mid-April after being struck by a cyber incident, which also disrupted food deliveries into stores. It led to gaps on shelves and forced the retailer to pause some offers in some stores. The attack has been blamed on criminal gang Scattered Spider. Stuart Machin, M&S's chief executive, was reportedly directly contacted by the hackers, with an abuse-filled email seen by the BBC allegedly showing hackers gloated about the attack. M&S declined to comment on the report. Seven weeks after the company disclosed the attack, it is still battling to bring its IT systems back online. M&S has not yet brought back online orders, with disruption expected to continue until July. The retailer has already admitted that the attack will knock an estimated £300m off its profits this year, dealing a setback to Mr Machin's efforts to rapidly grow the retailer. Clive Black, an analyst at Shore Capital, said the hit to food sales was to be 'wholly expected post the cyber incident, when considerable disruption to store operations was evident, meaning lots of gaps at time, famine and feast in terms of product coming into stores managed by manual rather than automated processes'. However, he suggested M&S was likely to experience a 'robust bounce back' once the IT issues were resolved. Richard Hyman, a partner at Aria Intelligent Solutions, added: 'If there was ever a good time for this to happen to M&S, it's now when they're in a position of strength. If this had happened several years ago, I think that one would be much more worried about them.' A spokesman for M&S said: 'We have made good progress in growing our food business and gaining market share over the long term. The most recent Kantar report shows market share growth of over 12pc, which is ahead of the market and underlines our resilience. 'Our stores are back to normal for our customers and have been for some time. We are getting on with providing the best quality products and service for our customers. In fact, just this week, we have launched 100 new or upgraded M&S Food products for summer.'

British WWE fans have been wanting professional wrestling's biggest show to come to the UK for decades. 3 3 3 And Khan, 54, is working rigorously to bring Mania outside of North America for the first time in the show's 40-plus-year history. The UK has some of the most hardcore WWE fans around the world and London has hosted a series of major premium live events, including Money in the Bank in 2023 and SummerSlam in 1992. The mayor wants to make the pro wrestling enthusiasts' dream a reality and has held talks with WWE chief content officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, who previously suggested he is open to the prospect. And he made one more major call to Triple H urging him to bring the Show of Shows across the Pond to the "sporting capital". London has hosted a number of major sporting events throughout the years, including Champions League finals, NFL matches and of course the 2012 Olympics. Khan told CNBC: "I'd love for WrestleMania to come to London. "Triple H if you're watching, we want WrestleMania to come to London. "If WrestleMania came to London, my message to the team there is that we wouldn't just have a great weekend, we'd have a festival, of you know, legends in WrestleMania coming to London, current stars, but also future stars as a well. "It will open a completely new market for them as well. "I think the potential has not been reached in terms of WrestleMania. "We are the sporting capital, in my view, of the world. And if WrestleMania wants to expand, the obvious place to come is London."
