
Erin Patterson tells murder trial wild mushrooms have 'more flavour'
An Australian woman who cooked a toxic mushroom meal has told her murder trial she has long been a mushroom lover, but more recently developed a taste for wild fungi varieties that have "more flavour".Erin Patterson has pleaded not guilty to the murder of three relatives, and the attempted murder of another, after serving them death cap mushrooms at her home in Victoria in July 2023. Prosecutors say she deliberately put the poisonous mushrooms in the meal but her defence team says it was a "terrible accident".Ms Patterson - during her second day on the witness stand - told the jury she began foraging for wild mushrooms during the Covid pandemic, years before the fatal meal.
Ms Patterson's in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, were all hospitalised after eating beef wellington at the lunch and died several days later.Ian Wilkinson, the uncle of Ms Patterson's estranged husband, also fell seriously ill but survived after weeks of treatment.After telling the court she accepted that death cap mushrooms were in the beef wellington she had served, Ms Patterson described foraging for mushrooms at various locations - botanic gardens, a rail trail near her house, and on her own property. "I mainly picked field mushrooms," she told the court, explaining she sometimes foraged with her two children. She recounted the first time she tried wild mushrooms, cutting off a small part before cooking it in butter. "[It] tasted good and I didn't get sick," she told the jury.The court also heard she had bought a food dehydrator in April 2023, in part because wild mushrooms had such a "small season" and she wanted to preserve them for later use.Asked where the mushrooms for the lunch at the centre of the case came from, Ms Patterson said "the vast majority" were purchased from a supermarket in Leongatha while some had been bought a few months earlier from an Asian grocery store in Melbourne. She couldn't remember "the specific purchase", but had previously bought a variety of mushrooms - shitake, porcini, enoki - from similar stores, she said. Other times, she'd purchased "wild mushroom mix" or "forest mushrooms" which didn't specify exact contents.Earlier Ms Patterson had stepped through changes in her dynamic with Simon Patterson and her in-laws following the couple's separation in 2015."In the immediate aftermath it was difficult... but that only lasted a couple of weeks... we went back to being really good friends."Her relationship with her in-laws "never changed", she said."I was just their daughter-in-law - they just continued to love me."However, she told the court her relationship with Simon turned tense amid conflict over finances from October 2022 onwards, and she had tried to get her in-laws to mediate.

'Don't you think I'd know if my house was for sale?' Moments later Fenech took his threats up a notch. '... I know you're videoing me, but in a minute you'll be having a little rest,' said Fenech. Fenech eventually pushed the auctioneer off his property and onto the road The auction continued with the bidding. 'Four's the bid. Four five. Here it goes,' yelled the auctioneer. 'Five million's the bid...' An increasingly agitated Fenech paced around. 'It's worth over nine million,' he interjected. The auctioneer grew louder as fake bidders pushed the price up above six million. 'Six point five once! Six point five twice!' he yelled. Fenech snapped and grabbed the auctioneer and started pushing him onto the road. Dib then rushed out of the car to let Fenech know it was a prank, giving his friend a bear hug as the actors and crew clapped. Moments later Fenech had calmed down and was even smiling about the elaborate stitch-up. 'He got me well,' admitted Fenech. Dib explained that Fenech had always been a part of his boxing career. 'We've had an amazing journey together,' he said. 'He's pranked so many people along the way, and today he finally got pranked.' Fenech replied to Dib 'the pranker gets pranked'.

Number of people with ADHD ‘probably isn't increasing that much'
Experts said that while there has been a rise in people being diagnosed with ADHD in the UK, the exact number is 'still probably lower than the best estimates' of the true number who have the condition. An increase in patients seeking assessments could possibly be down to greater awareness and less stigma, or disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Researchers also suggest spending a lot of time online could be creating a 'distracted generation', but that it is too early to draw conclusions. And while there is a link between social media and ADHD symptoms it is unclear 'what's driving what'. ADHD assessments are reported to be increasingly in demand, researchers said, which is putting a strain on health and education systems across the world. People with the neuro-developmental disorder may have trouble concentrating or sitting still, while other symptoms include being easily distracted, forgetfulness, finding it hard to follow instructions or organise time, and making impulsive decisions. Earlier this month, NHS England estimated for the first time that 2,498,000 people in England may have ADHD, which includes those without a diagnosis. Of the total, an estimated 741,000 are children and young people aged five to 24. And more than half a million people (549,000) were waiting for an ADHD assessment at the end of March 2025, up from 416,000 a year earlier, according to figures. The study, led by King's College London, aimed to update reviews on ADHD prevalence by examining global research from 2020 onwards. Academics looked at more than 9,000 studies, with 40 from across 17 different countries – one of which included data from 42 countries – included in the final analysis. Professor Philip Shaw, director of the King's Maudsley Partnership for Children and Young People at KCL's institute of psychiatry, psychology and neuroscience, said: 'It seems that our best evidence suggests that the true rate of ADHD probably isn't increasing that much. 'However, it's absolutely crystal clear that there is an increase in the number of people who are being clinically recognised or diagnosed as having ADHD in the United Kingdom. 'However, I will note that that rate is still probably lower than the best estimates we have of the rate of true ADHD in the population.' Dr Alex Martin, a lecturer in psychology and pandemic preparedness at KCL's institute of psychiatry, psychology and neuroscience, added: 'What we did find was that ADHD prevalence in adults and children has remained largely stable since 2020.' She said that some data being published is 'very much out of date', adding: 'This causes problems for healthcare policy makers internationally and means that services which are already under pressure may encounter increased demand without receiving additional support. According to Prof Shaw, the health service is 'playing catch-up' when it comes to ADHD, which he said could explain 'a marked uptick in the numbers of people seeking assessment'. Edmund Sonuga-Barke, a professor of developmental psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience at KCL, added there has been 'chronic under-recognition' in the history of ADHD, especially for certain groups and in particular women and girls. 'So part of the increase in diagnosis we've seen over the last 10 or so years is really a resetting or a recalibration, or a catch-up,' he said. Prof Shaw added: 'When I was at medical school and training as a psychiatrist, there was actually very little recognition of ADHD, particularly in young people and adults. 'Of course, there's both an increased recognition and – very welcome – less stigma around ADHD, which means that people are increasingly coming forward for assessment, and while we're working through that backlog, there are simply going to be long waiting lists.' Some other possibilities which Prof Shaw described as 'somewhat less likely' include a change in the threshold of how doctors diagnose ADHD and a shift in the understanding of the condition by children and young people. He added that his 'hunch' is that the 'huge awareness' of ADHD is 'that it's often used as a language of distress'. 'It's sometimes used, I suspect, the way that children and young people are expressing that they are struggling, particularly at school, and need help,' he said 'And of course, when a child is having problems that are impacting their life in a sustained way, they deserve a full mental health assessment. 'Even if the final diagnosis doesn't end up being ADHD, we may often, for example, find that this child is struggling with a problem with mood or anxiety.' Other societal issues could be driving the increase in assessments, including the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the use of social media. Prof Shaw said: 'Many of the skills of learning that kids have, how to focus, how to plan, how to organise themselves, has completely throw them out the loop for about two or three years, and this may well play a part in the uptick in the awareness and seeking of help for symptoms of inattention in particular. 'Many also point to a possible role for social media and the impacts it might be having on the developing brain. 'Now, for ADHD, there's a great degree of interest in the possibility that what's going on, is that the constant dividing of attention and multitasking online is creating, if you like, a distracted generation. 'We know there's an association between social media use and some symptoms of ADHD, but we don't know what's driving what, we don't know what's the chicken and what's the egg.' Prof Shaw said he has been 'struck' by some of his group's research findings into how 'variable' ADHD can be. He suggests ADHD 'is a dynamic challenge that changes with age'. Prof Sonuga-Barke added: 'I think the discovery that ADHD is a continuous risk dimension and not a fixed, natural category with clear biological boundaries may help explain why diagnostic rates are sensitive to changes in cultural values and beliefs, and clinical practices, and environmental risk exposures.'

Urgent outbreak alert as life-threatening disease surges in one Aussie state as wet weather fuels spike in cases
Two more cases of malaria have been recorded in Queensland with residents warned the potentially deadly disease can lead to seizures and long-term cognitive issues. Queensland Health are investigating two more cases of locally acquired malaria, bringing the number of infections in the state this year to 71. The second locally acquired infection was recently found in the Torres Strait Islands local government area. The vast majority of cases (97 per cent) this year have come from overseas, mainly Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. But it's a worrying trend given just four cases were recorded in the same period in 2021. Twenty were recorded in 2022, 50 in 2023 and 69 in 2024. Recent wild weather in Far North Queensland has played a role in the spike in cases. Autumn was one of the wettest in Queensland's history, beating 100-year records with floodwaters a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Malaria is preventable and curable and can't be passed from person to person and is spread through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Mater Health infectious diseases director Paul Griffin told ABC the outbreak would be contained to the far north of Australia. 'We don't have mosquitoes capable of passing malaria on all throughout the country, but certainly in the more tropical parts of our country, the Northern Territory and northern parts of Queensland,' he said. 'That's why in those areas we need to give people that advice to make sure we reduce the chance of local transmission.' The last cases acquired on mainland Australia were during an outbreak in north Queensland in 2002. 'Malaria used to be something that we had transmitted within Australia, but due to a host of different interventions locally, acquired malaria has not been something that we have really dealt with for some 40-odd years,' Mr Griffin said. Mr Griffin did however warn that those at risk of catching the disease needed to take the threat seriously. 'With more significant types of malaria, the severe consequences can be involvement of the brain, so cerebral malaria and even death,' he said. 'It is something that we do need to take seriously and make sure we take steps to limit how much it is able to be passed on in our country.' The most common early symptoms of malaria are fever, headache and chills and they usually start within 10 to 15 days of getting bitten by an infected mosquito.
