Kirwan Bears head coach Todd Wilson said their season opener was about more than just the all-important two competition points.
'We haven't played a game yet, so (the players) have a lot to prove,' Wilson said.
'We've certainly got some high hopes for a number of players, but we'll just see what happens when we play St Pat's. We're expecting them to be a real quality opposition.
'We're expecting a tough game. That Capricornia side at the state champs had a lot of St Pat's kids and they pushed the best of those southern sides – they've done well through the Mal Meninga and Cyril Connell so we're certainly expecting a tough game.'
The Bears have every reason to be cautious about Thursday's blockbuster season-opener.
A number of St Patrick's stars – including dynamic five-eighth Adam McSherry, Mark Morrow and Ryan John – return for another season of Aaron Payne Cup after being among the competition's standout performers last year.

The terrific trio have only gotten bigger and better in the past 12 months and St Pat's coach Shane Mau said the team would enter the competition with a focus on defence.
Mau said his players would need to be switched on from the get-go to stop the Bears running rampant.
'They're always very tough. They're usually a very big side and very mobile,' Mau said.
'So we'll be concentrating on defence – that's probably going to be our main focus for this, and probably for our first couple of games: really big defensive efforts.
'We've probably got the strike power with our attack, but defence is going to win this one.'
The Cowboys Challenge fixture kicks off the day's action at 10.30am, followed by the schoolgirls at 11.30am and Aaron Payne Cup at 12.30pm.

‘I went straight into protection mode': Adam O'Brien issues heartfelt apology to Knights fans as vile player abuse comes to light
Knights coach Adam O'Brien has apologised for comments made following Thursday night's remarkable comeback win over the Sea Eagles where he suggested that the fans that booed his team 'don't know anything about rugby league'. It was an emotional response from a coach of a team that has struggled all year but fought back from 16-0 down at halftime to beat Manly in golden point thanks to a try from superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga. O'Brien wasn't aware of the booing and issued an emotional response when asked about it with the first question of the press conference. Matty Johns has defended the Knights fans who voiced their frustrations with boo's after their side were down 16-0 🚨 It comes after coach Adam O'Brien said 'they don't know anything about rugby league'... MORE ðŸ'‰ — Fox League (@FOXNRL) June 6, 2025 'It's really disappointing,' he said after the game. 'I know the scoreline's not what they want, but to boo the effort that went into the first half from a young team … the people that boo don't know anything about rugby league.' The Knights coach came under fire from fans and sections of the media on Friday morning over his post-match comments, with O'Brien fronting up to a press conference to apologise to fans who have supported the team through some tough periods over the past decade. 'I apologise unreservedly to our members and fans that I offended, and I can understand why they'd be offended,' he said. 'I was underprepared for that question. I was unaware that there had been some booing on my way down at halftime, so the first time I'd heard it was with that question, so I went straight into protection mode for our playing group. 'That's not an excuse. I'm here to own it. That's not how I feel about our members. I understand we're here because of those people, and I think I've openly stated the opposite for a number of years that they are an educated fan base and an educated crowd. 'They sit through all sorts of weather and scorelines with unwavering loyalty, so I'm disappointed that I let them down with an emotional response to protect the playing group when I didn't have all the facts. 'Hopefully, over time I can win back some of their respect because that's not how I feel about them.' O'Brien said he just wanted to protect his players after a difficult few weeks, with Knights winger James Schiller copping vile abuse on social media from someone who threatened his life after the game. Schiller endured a rough first half playing out of position but came up with several huge plays in attack when he was moved back to the right wing. 'That's worrying and that's probably where I was coming from,' O'Brien replied when asked about the abuse. 'I want to protect them, so for him to go through that over a couple of errors (is awful). 'It's a game of footy and he's got a family, so that's partly the reason why you do you want to protect them.'

Matty Johns fumes as Adam O'Brien's fan attack goes too far
Matty Johns has taken aim at Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien after he slammed the club's own fan base on Thursday night. The Knights went scoreless in the opening half as they trailed Manly 16-0 at the break and walked off McDonald Jones Stadium to a chorus of boos. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. In a tale of two halves, they emerged a different side after the break as they scored four tries to send the game to golden point before Kalyn Ponga crossed for the winner in the 83rd minute. Despite the come from behind victory, O'Brien was critical of the halftime response from those in the stands. The 47-year-old stated 'the people that booed don't know anything about rugby league', a comment which did not sit well with Knights great Johns. 'Gee that's a bit rough,' Johns said on The Late Show with Mattys Johns, as you can see in the video above. 'I tell ya what mate, those Newcastle people from days when I played right through ... we used to get boo'd off sometimes and you cop it, because those fans turn up even when it's pissing rain, hail or we're sitting bottom of the ladder. 'They always turn up and they pay their money and they've supported that side for so long, I think they're entitled to air their grievances.' It's not the first time in O'Brien's tenure that Johns has taken aim at the coach with Matthew coming to the defence of his brother Andrew last year. The cold relationship between the coach and the iconic Knights brothers was on full display as a public war of words erupted. Club legend and NRL Immortal Andrew suggested the club pick Will Pryce to make his debut, a suggestion that was ignored by O'Brien. 'I think Will's still learning the game out here to be honest. I don't know how many games Joey has watched of NSW Cup, but he (Pryce) hasn't had many back-to-back good ones.' Those comments again didn't sit well with Matthew who slammed the Knights coach for ignoring a legend of the game. Now a fresh chapter in the long-running feud has emerged after the Knights' Thursday night win over the Sea Eagles. Johns however wasn't alone in his criticism of O'Brien with Fox League commentator Andrew Voss slamming the post-game remarks on his SEN radio show on Friday morning. 'I think all fans should be allowed to have their say,' Voss said. 'You pay your hard-earned money to watch your team, and if your team stinks up the joint on a regular basis, are you entitled to boo? O'Brien obviously walked into the presser feeling cocky because his team came back to win. 'To say to Knights fans that they 'don't know footy'. I think he'd regret those comments today. 'He overstepped the mark last night. That was their 8th scoreless half of the year.' The comments from O'Brien overshadowed what was a stunning victory for the Knights who entered the clash having lost three of their past four matches. Despite the intense scrutiny being applied to the coach, his place as the leader of the club remains all but locked in thanks to a lucrative contract payout. A reported $2m payout looms overhead if the club is to sever ties with O'Brien who is contracted to the end of 2027, having been installed as the coach back in 2020. 'I've got good, strong support from the board,' O'Brien said in May. 'They understand the situation that we're in with our depth and the injuries. 'Pressure and expectation comes with the job, I understand that. I'm used to it by now. 'We want results and I understand our supporters and sponsors want results - but I can't get fixated on that narrative. I've just got to focus on getting today right and being really committed to fighting our way out with the players.'

‘Bigger than me': Mal Meninga at ease with giving up Kangaroos role to coach Perth Bears
The Perth Bears have locked in their most important piece with rugby league Immortal Mal Meninga confirmed as the inaugural coach of the NRL's newest franchise. Meninga has had to vacate his role as Kangaroos coach and will officially start his new job on July 1 as he prepares to build a roster for when the Bears enter the competition in 2027. The Raiders legend oversaw the greatest Maroons side of all time and has enjoyed World Cup success with Australia, but this will be his first time back in club land since he left Canberra in 2001. 'This is bigger than me,' he said. 'It's about the game and the growth of the game in WA. I want to leave it in a good place. The foundations are going to be set in stone, and when I move on, the great club called the Perth Bears will hopefully be a success. 'It's a huge responsibility, but I believe I'm up for it. 'It's a huge challenge, but I love challenges.' With Meninga signed on for the next three years, Perth finally has a big Bear over there, but they'll need a chair as well and hopefully people willing to share the stories that the NRL wants them to tell. It's why Meninga, Bears chief executive Anthony De Ceglie and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo stressed the importance of understanding the rugby league community in Western Australia and ensuring the link to North Sydney isn't lost. De Ciglie is aware of the sporting landscape in Perth where AFL remains king, but rugby league has already ruffled a few feathers and will only get bigger with Meninga at the helm. 'It's obvious that Mal is an Immortal of the NRL, but I think it's important to note that he's an Immortal of the national sporting landscape,' De Ceglie said, with Meninga beating out other candidates like Brad Arthur and Sam Burgess. 'Mal is a part of the Australian identity, so we're incredibly honoured that he's taken up this opportunity. 'It's small steps. We've gone from one Bear in me to two Bears with Mal, so we've doubled our staff overnight. 'I genuinely feel like the first thing we need to do is listen and appreciate and respect the legacy of the North Sydney Bears but also the fans in WA who have a proud tradition as well. 'They've kept the candle burning for decades, and we have to marry those things together to make this thing a huge success.' The NRL will work with the Bears to finalise the board, with attention now turning to who will replace Meninga as Kangaroos coach. Meninga has played a key role in growing the international game but won't be there for the Ashes tour at the end of the year, with former Blues boss Brad Fittler the early favourite to take over. 'The commission has long held the view that the Kangaroos coach can't be involved in coaching clubs as well, and that policy is going to continue,' Abdo said. 'As Mal said, this is a full-time job and it's about building a team from the ground up. It's exciting, but it's going to take a lot of hard work, so the focus on the club is one thing, but the commission also has the existing policy. 'We're all excited for the end-of-season tour, and it's been a long time coming. Today was about announcing Mal as the Bears coach, and with Mal secured and finalised, the commission will turn its attention to the right candidate for the Kangaroos.'
