Spring shoulder season, which falls between April and May, offers lower prices and fewer crowds at popular international destinations.
Travelers can save up to 30% on airfare by booking during the spring shoulder season instead of waiting for the peak summer months.
Popular destinations like Tokyo, London, Paris, and Seoul offer significant savings on airfare during April and May.
The weeks between spring break and summer can feel like a lull to many travelers, but it's actually one of the best times to go on that big international trip.
Spring shoulder season, arriving in April and May, brings lower prices and fewer crowds before the peak summer rush sets in. Travelers can enjoy cheap airfare along with a more relaxed atmosphere at some of the top destinations. (For many places, you'll also score temperate weather as the sweltering summer heat has yet to hit.)
This year, spring shoulder season could save travelers up to 30%, with price drops between $250 and $380 to popular international destinations, according to Kayla Inserra DeLoache, KAYAK's consumer travel trends expert.

Here's another bonus of traveling during the off-season: it also makes you a more sustainable traveler. Going when there are no crowds means you won't be joining the hordes of summer tourists overwhelming a destination that may already be dealing with overtourism.
'For any travelers looking to book that summer trip and facing some sticker shock from popular destinations, I recommend widening your travel dates to spring or fall," said Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner. "The shoulder season can be a great way to stretch your budget and get amazing deals. Flexibility in travel booking, whether it's travel dates, destinations, airports, or airlines will always yield the best deals."
In recent years, Skyscanner has seen more travelers book summer vacations before peak season to beat the crowds.
Here are the best shoulder season deals, according to some of the top travel platforms.
Tokyo
This year, Japan is stealing the hearts of travelers who want to explore its ancient temples, delicious cuisine and tranquil onsens. (The favorable conversion rate for Americans doesn't hurt either.) Spring is an ideal time to visit, with a round trip flight from the U.S. costing $1,194, about 13% less than in June and July this year, according to Hopper.
London
London, during the spring, offers cooler temperatures and cheaper flights for travelers. Last year, the average airfare to London in April cost $581 and shot up to $718 in July, Skyscanner found.
This year, travelers can save up to 18% if they go during April or May instead of June and July, according to Hopper.
Paris
The City of Lights is one of the most romantic perennial destinations with endless gastronomy, history and art. Last April, the average flight cost to Paris was $518 in April but rose to $803 in July – an increase of 55%, according to Skyscanner.
Flights to Paris this April and May go for $768 compared to $939 during June and July, for a savings of 18%, according to Hopper.
Seoul
Seoul is another emerging destination for American travelers, with a 25% increase in lodging searches this spring, according to Expedia. Travelers can score up to 17% in flight savings if they book in April or May for flight costs of $1,326. In June and July, prices go up to $1,605, according to Hopper.
Rome
The Eternal City has been struggling with overtourism and crowding at its most popular destinations, prompting it to consider fixed time slots at sites like the Trevi Fountain. Visiting during shoulder season not only helps you avoid those peak summer crowds but leaves more money in your bank account. Last April, the average airfare to Rome was $658 and shot up to $982 in June, according to Skyscanner.
Hopper data shows that a round trip flight during April and May costs around $813, about 18% cheaper than the $988 airfare in June and July.
Athens
Spring travelers to Athens can roam ancient ruins and indulge in fresh Mediterranean cuisine, all without breaking the bank. Last April, flights to Athens went for $869 on average, and reached $1,131 by June, according to Skyscanner.
Round trip airfare in April and May costs $861 for a savings of 21% compared to the summer, according to Hopper.
Taipei
Ancient temples, affordable street food, and modern skyscrapers comprise the bustling capital of Taiwan, and spring is one of the best times to visit. Travelers can score big savings during this shoulder season – a whopping 29% with airfare for April and May costing $971, Hopper data found.
Helsinki
The coastal capital of Finland seamlessly blends together modern architecture, sustainable living and historic landmarks, like the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Fortress Suomenlinna. According to KAYAK airfare between March and May, airfare is $793 on average, about 32% cheaper than in June to August.
Glasgow
Scotland's Glasgow is the ideal destination for travelers seeking out a vibrant arts and culture scene along with eye-catching gothic architecture. Although spring will be a bit chillier than summer, a visit before peak season can save travelers up to 32% on airfare, according to KAYAK. Flights between March and May are priced at $854 on average before rising to $1,129 from June to August.
Bali
Known for its beaches and spiritual atmosphere, Bali has long been enchanting travelers looking for solace. Spring shoulder season offers cheaper airfare without contributing to overtourism at the Indonesian destination. KAYAK data shows flights between March and May costing $1,335 on average, about 29% less than the $1,719 price tag for June to August airfare.

For some, it's a day trip. For others, it is a long weekend or an entire week of travel from the last weekend in June through the first weekend of July, visiting friends, relatives or spending time at the beach or the mountains. In the several days leading up to the Fourth of July, expect very warm to hot conditions in much of the West, typical summer warmth from the Great Lakes to the Northeast and humid conditions with showers and thunderstorms from New Mexico to the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. "Portions of the Midwest, Southeast and interior Southwest stand the most likely chance for some disruptive downpours and potent thunderstorm activity on Friday, July 4," AccuWeather's Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said. An area of clouds, showers and thunderstorms is forecast to evolve from the northeastern Gulf coast to the southern Atlantic coast later in June and linger through the first part of July. It is possible this broad area of low pressure could organize into one or more tropical rainstorms during this time. Those heading to the beaches from northern Florida and the Alabama and Mississippi panhandles to the coastal Carolinas may experience rough surf conditions and perhaps stiff winds should a tropical depression or storm try to develop. Around the July 4th holiday, in areas farther to the northwest, "we expect one or more complexes of thunderstorms to develop over the northern and central Plains and wander into the Midwest," Pastelok said. "Exactly where these storms wander will determine which areas could receive heavy rain and severe weather." Outside of the thunderstorms, the weather may be just fine for outdoor plans most of the day on Friday. Thunderstorms will be possible for at least part of the day in Minneapolis, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri. It is possible that clouds and downpours could affect outdoor activities in some of these major metro areas and others in the region. Conditions in much of the Northeast will be far cooler than during this week's heat wave. In fact, it could be very comfortable, provided high pressure settles slowly over the region rather than slipping off the Atlantic coast. Humidity levels are likely to be lower than July standards, far lower in most areas compared to the swelter of late. Some showers are likely to skirt northern New England and upstate New York, but the day and evening of July 4 are likely to be free of rain in the zone from Boston to New York City and Washington, D.C., which should be good news for some of the largest fireworks displays in the nation. Folks heading to Coney Island, New York, will probably need sunglasses. Another active zone for thunderstorms is likely to be New Mexico, western Texas, part of Colorado and eastern Arizona as the North American monsoon continues to unfold. Most of the thunderstorm activity on Independence Day will tend to occur from mid-afternoon to mid-evening, but there can be some exceptions. Aside from the threat of lightning strikes for those caught outdoors as storms build during the midday hours, flash flooding will remain a concern. Elsewhere, showers will dampen western Washington and northwestern Oregon. While it will rain for only a small part of July 4, it could shower in the morning just as well as in the afternoon or evening. "If it's heat you want, the best bets with sunglasses needed, will be the interior West, portions of the Plains and the interior Southeast on Independence Day," Pastelok explained. Highs will be well into the 90s to the low 100s over the deserts of the Southwest, while highs mainly in the upper 80s to the mid-90s are forecast for much of the Plains and interior Southeast, away from the stormy coastal areas. In general, the West will be best overall for the Fourth of July, with only a few pockets where rain is likely to fall. However, folks are reminded to check with local laws and restrictions before setting off any backyard fireworks. Local dry conditions may prevent fireworks altogether. For those heading to the beach, the Fourth of July often brings some chilly surf, especially in New England, the upper mid-Atlantic and much of the Pacific Coast. Surf temperatures typically range from the upper 40s to the low 60s in New England and along much of the Pacific coast. Waters are generally warm enough and safe for swimming along the Gulf and southern Atlantic coasts, with widespread surf temperatures in the 80s.

This trend, which is a winner for real estate investors, but still has the potential to leave traditional renters out in the cold, was recently profiled in Business Insider. Property owner Zeona McIntyre discovered the potential of mid-term leases during the COVID pandemic. When the pandemic set in, the chaos caused by stay-at-home orders and travel restrictions led to her losing nearly all her Airbnb bookings. 'I was really open to doing whatever I needed to get my properties rented,' she told Business Insider. McIntyre found success on a website called Furnish Finder. The platform focused on offering leases longer than 30 days but less than one year to working professionals. It turned out to be the happy medium between Airbnb and being a traditional long-term landlord. 'I realized there are tons of people looking all the time for longer stays, and longer stays are kind of awesome because people don't need as much from you. They're OK to go buy their own toilet paper and change the batteries because they're living there,' she said. It was a classic case of necessity being the mother of invention, and the mid-term rental business was so good to McIntyre that she converted all of her income properties to the new format. 'My bread-and-butter is these mid-term rentals,' said McIntyre. 'I want a longer tenant in there, and I don't want to have to think about it for three months.' Other landlords are beginning to realize that taking this middle-of-the-road approach offers a host of potential advantages. According to Business Insider, many short-term rental bans or registration requirements apply to properties offering stays of less than 30 days. Short-term rental registration also often included high fees and tax surcharges. Other cities and local governments limited the number of short-term rentals that could exist in a given area. In most cases, mid-term leases are not subject to these kinds of restrictions. That's why McIntyre told Business Insider she believes that mid-term rentals are the "sweet spot of real estate investing." She went so far as to say she considers them to be 'a whole different vibe from short-term rentals, and way less stressful.' Many short-term rental landlords can attest to the high levels of detail and stress that go hand in hand with the high rents. When you factor that in with the reduced regulatory picture, McIntyre's point becomes even clearer. 'Short-term rentals have been under scrutiny, and the ever-tightening regulations are constantly changing,' she said to Business Insider. 'But there is sort of this magic number that, as soon as a listing is over 30 days, these rentals get classified into a long-term rental bucket, and then you don't have the extra taxes or have to have a short-term rental permit."
