India denies entry to UN aviation investigator in Air India crash probe, say sources
NEW DELHI - India would not allow a UN investigator to join a probe of a crashed Air India jet that some safety experts had criticised for delays in analysis of crucial black box data, two senior sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Earlier this week, the United Nations aviation agency took the unusual step of offering India one of its investigators to provide assistance following the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash killing 260 people in Ahmedabad on June 12.
Previously, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has deployed investigators to help with certain probes, such as the downing of a Malaysian plane in 2014 and a Ukrainian jetliner in 2020, but those times the agency had been asked for assistance.
ICAO had asked for the investigator who was in India to be given observer status, but Indian authorities refused the offer, the sources said.
The news was first reported on June 26 by the Indian news channel Times Now.
India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is leading the probe into the world's deadliest aviation accident in a decade, did not return a request for comment.
ICAO was not immediately available for comment.
India's civil aviation ministry said on June 26 that investigators downloaded flight recorder data around two weeks after the crash.
Previously, safety experts had questioned a lack of information about the probe, including the status of the combined black box unit recovered on June 13, along with a second set that was found on June 16.

Questions were also raised on whether the recorders would be read in India or in the US since the National Transportation Safety Board is participating in the investigation. The Indian government held only one press conference on the incident, and no questions were taken.
Under international rules known throughout the industry by their legal name 'Annex 13', the decision of where to read flight recorders should be made immediately in case the evidence obtained could avert future tragedies.
Earlier this week, an Indian aviation ministry official who declined to be named said the department has been 'following all the ICAO protocols.'
The official added that media representatives have made updates on important events.
Most air crashes are caused by multiple factors, with a preliminary report expected about 30 days after the accident. REUTERS

Japan executes ‘Twitter killer' who murdered 9 people: Media reports
TOKYO – Japan has executed a death row prisoner, public broadcaster NHK and other media outlets said on June 27 , the first time since 2022 that the country has enacted capital punishment. The justice ministry declined to confirm the hanging but NHK, citing government sources, said the prisoner was 34-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi, who murdered nine people in 2017. Dubbed the 'Twitter killer', he was sentenced to death for murdering and dismembering the nine people he met on the social media platform, now called X. Shiraishi is said to have lured his mostly female victims, aged between 15 and 26, to his apartment near Tokyo, where he killed them and cut up their bodies. He admitted murdering all nine, having made contact with suicidal victims on Twitter and offered to help them die, before stashing bits of bodies in coolers around his small apartment, according to media reports. Japan and the United States are the only two members of the Group of Seven industrialised economies to retain the death penalty. There is overwhelming public support for the practice, and a 2024 Japanese government survey of 1,800 respondents showed 83 per cent saw the death penalty as 'unavoidable'. In 2022, Tomohiro Kato was hanged for an attack in 2008 in which he rammed a rented two-tonne truck into a crowd in Tokyo's Akihabara district, before getting out and going on a stabbing spree in an attack that killed seven people. 'I came to Akihabara to kill people. It didn't matter who I'd kill,' he told police at the time. As of December 2023, some 107 prisoners were waiting for their death sentences to be carried out, the justice ministry told AFP. It is always done by hanging. The law stipulates that executions must be carried out within six months of a final verdict after appeals are exhausted. In reality, however, most inmates are kept in solitary confinement for years – and sometimes decades. There is widespread criticism of the system and the government's lack of transparency over the practice. Inmates are often informed of their impending death at the last minute, typically in the early morning before it happens. Ms Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on June 21 at Indonesia's second-largest volcano, Mount Rinjani, located on Lombok island. Attempts to evacuate her were hindered by challenging weather and terrain after authorities spotted her unmoving body with a drone. Rescuers finally reached her body on the evening of June 24 after a days-long effort and evacuated her a day later. Her family has claimed Ms Marins could have been saved if she was reached within hours rather than days. 'Juliana suffered severe neglect by the rescue team. Juliana would still be alive if the team had gotten to her within the estimated time of 7 hours,' her family wrote late on June 25 on an Instagram account that has amassed over one million followers. 'Juliana deserved so much more! Now we are going after justice for her, because it's what she deserves.'
