Reconstruction of Coedmore Bridge still on track
THE construction of the Coedmore Bridge project remains on track to be completed by mid-June, with some of the key components nearing completion.

Nolwandle Gcaba, Ward 64 community liaison officer, said that much progress was made. 'The V-drains on Coedmore Avenue side are progressing, subsoil drains installed on both sides of the bridge, stormwater pipes and manholes installed on Yellowwood Park side, preparation of layer works continued, hinge columns to support abatements in progress and height restriction poles reinstatement has been confirmed,' said Gcaba.
She added at this stage, completion is still expected around mid-June.
The Coedmore Bridge suffered severe damage in the 2022 floods and motorists have had to use diversion routes that take as long as 45 minutes to navigate. The eThekwini Municipality allocated R48m for the rehabilitation of the two-lane 90m bridge with pedestrian walkways. The funding was made possible by the National Treasury's Municipal Disaster Response Grant.

Amanzimtoti residents push for attendance at peaceful march
A COMMUNITY united is one that sets aside its differences for a shared cause – today, residents of Ward 97 stood for the Amanzimtoti community at large to push for attendance in a peaceful march on June 7 against the homeless shelter being developed in Lower Illovo. The march is set to commence at 07:30 from the R603 opposite Engen Bonamanzi Service Station, and it will end at the construction site. Dispersal time will be by 11:00. Sardine run: 25 KZN beaches currently closed for swimming
With the 2025 sardine run already underway, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) revealed that they have removed shark safety nets from the waters at 25 beaches along the south coast. The Sharks Board said that that melee of predators accompanying the sardine shoals was problematic, not just to the sardines but also to the Board itself. 'The shark nets that provide bather protection along the beaches take a heavy toll of sharks and dolphins if they are not lifted before the arrival of the Sardine Run,' it said, as per Business Tech. The eThekwini Municipality also announced on Monday, 2 June, that the public was now prohibited from swimming on KwaZulu-Natal's south coast beaches, due to the shark nets being removed. Siyanqoba residents cry out for gravel road repairs
Residents in Siyanqoba are fed up with the municipality's inaction towards fixing the gravel roads, hindering them from accessing a number of services as vehicles struggle to pass through. The ward 12 residents from Yellow Bone complain that it all started during heavy rains experienced early this year, which flooded their gravel roads not far from their yards, causing serious damage to the roads, as there have been big holes that require urgent intervention. 'We have been reporting the issue, but it's so sad to see that not much is being done about it,' the residents cried, adding that they are no longer able to receive services such as waste collection due to the terrible state of their road. 'The waste collection workers told us that they won't collect waste until the roads are fixed,' they said. The residents claimed that road workers came to fix the road, but only the section in the public eye received attention, and for their street, the condition still remains the same. Their great concern is how the situation poses a danger to both pedestrians and motorists at night, especially with the lack of streetlights. As if that wasn't enough, the community went on to complain about the irregular supply of water in their area, as they claim that the person responsible for the pump doesn't operate it as he is expected to, leaving residents without water for weeks. Ward Councillor Lucky Tolo, explained that the biggest issue that they are facing is that they are not fully capacitated when it comes to the equipment needed to fix the road. 'We got a team who attended to the road two weeks ago, but they couldn't finish up as they were then called to an emergency in another area,' he said, adding that he will check with the team to find out when they will be going back to finish up the work.
