LIKE-FOR-LIKE CONCUSSION SUBSTITUTE RULE
Bombay Sport Exchange Ep 4: Prof. Ratnakar Shetty on BCCI, cricket politics & Indian cricket's growth
ONCE APPROVED:
NEW DELHI: A concussion is a common form of injury, particularly in sports. It occurs when a sudden impact causes the brain to move within the skull, potentially leading to a mild traumatic brain injury. Symptoms can vary widely, and not all concussions involve a loss of consciousness. While most individuals recover fully, proper rest and medical clearance are essential before returning to any physical activity.Early assessment is critical, as resuming play too soon can lead to more severe injuries. The concussion substitute rule brings cricket in line with other major sports that prioritise player safety. It plays a crucial role in mitigating the risks associated with head injuries while preserving the fairness and competitiveness of the game.By carefully balancing medical precaution with sporting integrity, this regulation ensures teams are not unduly penalised by unforeseen injuries, and the rule itself cannot be exploited for tactical gain.In cricket, if a player suffers a concussion—or is suspected to have one—during a match, a replacement can be allowed under strict regulations. The injury must occur on the field and during active play.A formal diagnosis must be made by the team's medical representative. The medical staff or team manager must submit a Concussion Replacement Request to the ICC Match Referee, detailing the incident, the medical findings, and the proposed like-for-like substitute. This request must be made as soon as possible after the incident. The Match Referee is responsible for approving the substitution and ensuring that it does not give the team an unfair advantage.A key aspect of the regulation is the "like-for-like" requirement. The substitute must have a similar role and skillset as the injured player. The Match Referee will evaluate:What the concussed player was likely to contribute if they had continued,And how the proposed replacement compares in role and ability. If the referee determines that the replacement would provide an undue advantage, restrictions may be imposed. For example, if the injured player was suspended from bowling at the time of the injury, the substitute will also not be allowed to bowl. The concussed player takes no further part in the match. Both the original player and the substitute are recorded as having participated for statistical purposes. The Match Referee's decision is final, with no option for appeal.

Australia denied entry to Lord's ahead of WTC final amid India's training: Reports
The Australian men's cricket team were denied entry to the training facility at Lord's on Saturday for training purposes ahead of their World Test Championship final against South Africa on Saturday, according to media reports. Reports say that the reason Australia was denied entry was because they were told that the training ground at Lord's wasn't available. While the exact reason why Pat Cummins and his team were not allowed remains unknown, Code Sports reports that members of the Indian team, who are in England for a five-match Test series, were training at the same location. A report by an Australian media house said that the Indian team was permitted to train at Lord's 'at the expense of the Australian team' as Cummins' men were 'booted out' of the venue. The report also emphasised the fact that the Indian team will play its first Test against Australia not before June 20, while the WTC final is scheduled to start on Wednesday. However, after facing rejection initially, the Australians got access on Sunday and managed to get some practice ahead of their final. 'I think this is the best version of the stadium this morning. There's no one around, which is great. I'm sure it will be much more civil this time around,' said Cummins, referring to how the Australians have faced hostility at Lords from the English crowd. 'Things got pretty heated in the middle of that Ashes series, but I think a lot of them will have learned their lesson, and I'm sure they'll be very polite,' he added.

IVRI performs first indigenous hip transplant in dog
Lucknow: The Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, set a record by carrying out a hip transplant on a dog using indigenous technology. This first of its kind transplant in the country was carried out by IVRI scientist Dr Rohit Kumar and his team. The transplant was possible after three years of intensive research. Technical assistance was provided by human orthopaedic surgeon from Bareilly Dr Alok Singh, along with Yogesh Saxena and Devesh Saxena of Bareilly Medicare firm.
