Stocks are having a good war but the dollar is not
Israel and Iran continued to bomb each other today, a scenario that used to be regarded as potentially disastrous for asset markets. But while the price of oil has risen as a result of the conflict, the rise has been moderate, and stock investors have been taking it easy. The U.S. dollar, however, has reached historically low levels of enthusiasm among institutional investors, according to Bank of America. The Stoxx Europe 600 was down 0.9% in early trading, but that was the only drama on global asset markets so far today. The VIX volatility index is in retreat after the S&P 500 put in a solid performance yesterday. S&P 500 futures were off only 0.7% this morning, premarket. In Japan, stocks rose, but in China they were flat. The major surprise this week seems to be the relaxed, almost upbeat attitude of investors toward the Israel-Iran conflict. U.S. stocks have been up over the last five trading sessions as traders await the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate decision tomorrow. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is expected to keep rates the same—it will be any change in his commentary that moves the markets. Why are stocks shrugging off the bombing? The institutional bulls are back, according to Bank of America's most recent survey of global fund managers. The survey calls on 222 panellists who have $587 billion under management. 'The Bottom Line: investor sentiment recovers to pre–Liberation Day 'Goldilocks bull' levels as trade war & recession fears abate,' BofA's Michael Hartnett and his team told clients in a note seen by Fortune. Nonetheless, there's still one asset that investors hate right now, and that's the U.S. dollar. The dollar has lost nearly 10% of its value against foreign currencies this year, according to the DXY index. Investors are now the most underweight in the dollar in 20 years, according to BofA. '[The] biggest summer pain trade is long the buck,' Hartnett et al. said. Antonio Ruggiero of Convera also noted feebleness of the dollar: 'Surging oil prices—up as much as 12% on Friday amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East—have further exposed the dollar's fading safe-haven appeal. A clear divergence is taking shape: oil rallies, yet the dollar fails to follow. This underscores how sentiment toward the U.S. economy is acting as a stronger drag than what has historically been a dollar-positive force—higher oil prices, especially in periods of geopolitical risk. The result? Renewed selling pressure as confidence in U.S. assets continues to erode,' he told clients. 'The dollar's only meaningful support for now remains a hawkish Fed, now back in full alert mode—leaving those softer CPI prints in a distance past. Whether tariff-induced or driven by surging oil prices looming inflationary pressures put the Fed in a tougher position to deliver the rate cuts sought by the Trump administration—reinforcing the case for policy to remain steady for now.' Here's a snapshot of the action prior to the opening bell in New York: S&P 500 futures were off 0.7% this morning. The index itself closed up 0.94% yesterday. The Stoxx Europe 600 sunk 0.9% in early trading. Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.59%. South Korea's Kospi was flat. China's Composite was also flat. The Composite rose 1.5% yesterday propelled by various tech stocks. Coinbase was up 7.7%. Reddit was up 6.8%. Palantir was up nearly 3%. As an AI entrepreneur, will.i.am says data privacy and training the next generation should be prioritized
Musician and founder of the platform spoke during Business Insider's CMO Insider breakfast at Cannes. He discussed everything from AI to data privacy. This article is part of " CMO Insider," a series on marketing leadership and innovation. Musician, producer, and entrepreneur compared AI to early video games during a discussion at Business Insider's CMO Insider breakfast at Cannes on Tuesday. "AI is in its infancy," he said. "It's Pac-Man; it ain't even Halo yet." Now a founder of the platform , was interviewed by Jamie Heller, the editor in chief of Business Insider, at the event, which had BCG as its founding sponsor. Early video games, said, required a level of imagination from the player in the absence of sophisticated graphics and a real story. This same level of imagination is needed from "the people that love AI, the folks whose imagination is doing the work as you're training it or it's learning from your imagination," he said. He said AI will not stifle creativity, but provide room to enhance it. While AI may be in its early stages, its potential impact over the next few years is undeniable. One area that will need to adjust to make way for AI is higher education. That is why, said, recently partnered with Arizona State University to provide technology to help enhance the learning experience and prepare students for the reality that awaits them upon graduation at the end of the decade. "When you go out into the world, you're not just competing with humans," he said of these students. Rather, there's an "onslaught of agents" that are replacing the jobs that students are going to school for, and there's no one trying to offset how they compete with them, he said. He said working with is going to provide a path so that students will make an agent of their own; when they graduate, so will their agent. "Humans have to be able to compete with the marketplace, and that marketplace is going to be like ghost bots that are going to be doing amazing work," he added. Like-minded partners is currently working with brands like Formula 1, Mercedes, and Qualcomm. In looking for brands to work with, said that there has to be a sense of shared values. "If the values aren't aligned, that could be a problem," he said. "For example, it'll be hard for us to work with companies that have data privacy practices that don't really gel with how we want to move in this AI space." He added that he's fearful that AI could follow the same trajectory of many social media platforms, whose data practices have been "parasitic." "There have been lots of issues with data practices and lack of regulations and governance around it," he said. "So if that is to come into this new age we are stepping into with AI, it's not a good result."

Midjourney launches its first AI video generation model, V1
Midjourney, one of the most popular AI image generation startups, announced on Wednesday the launch of its much-anticipated AI video generation model, V1. V1 is an image-to-video model, in which users can upload an image — or take an image generated by one of Midjourney's other models — and V1 will produce a set of four five-second videos based on it. Much like Midjourney's image models, V1 is only available through Discord, and it's only available on the web at launch. Introducing our V1 Video Model. It's fun, easy, and beautiful. Available at 10$/month, it's the first video model for *everyone* and it's available now. — Midjourney (@midjourney) June 18, 2025 The launch of V1 puts Midjourney in competition with AI video generation models from other companies, such as OpenAI's Sora, Runway's Gen 4, Adobe's Firefly, and Google's Veo 3. While many companies are focused on developing controllable AI video models for use in commercial settings, Midjourney has always stood out for its distinctive AI image models that cater to creative types. The company says it has larger goals for its AI video models than generating B-roll for Hollywood films or commercials for the ad industry. In a blog post, Midjourney CEO David Holz says its AI video model is the company's next step towards its ultimate destination, creating AI models 'capable of real-time open-world simulations.' After AI video models, Midjourney says it plans to develop AI models for producing 3D renderings, as well as real-time AI models. The launch of Midjourney's V1 model comes just a week after the startup was sued by two of Hollywood's most notorious film studios: Disney and Universal. The suit alleges that images created by Midjourney's AI image models depict the studio's copyrighted characters, like Homer Simpson and Darth Vader. Hollywood studios have struggled to confront the rising popularity of AI image and video-generating models, such as the ones Midjourney develops. There's a growing fear that these AI tools could replace or devalue the work of creatives in their respective fields, and several media companies have alleged that these products are trained on their copyrighted works. Boston, MA | REGISTER NOW While Midjourney has tried to pitch itself as different from other AI image and video startups — more focused on creativity than immediate commercial applications — the startup can not escape these accusations. To start, Midjourney says it will charge 8x more for a video generation than a typical image generation, meaning subscribers will run out of their monthly allotted generations significantly faster when creating videos than images. At launch, the cheapest way to try out V1 is by subscribing to Midjourney's $10-per-month Basic plan. Subscribers to Midjourney's $60-a-month Pro plan and $120-a-month Mega plan will have unlimited video generations in the company's slower, 'Relax' mode. Over the next month, Midjourney says it will reassess its pricing for video models. midjourney introduces video generation and it's surpassing all my expectations. — Phi Hoang (@apostraphi) June 18, 2025 V1 comes with a few custom settings that allow users to control the video model's outputs. Users can select an automatic animation setting to make an image move randomly, or they can select a manual setting that allows users to describe, in text, a specific animation they want to add to their video. Users can also toggle the amount of camera and subject movement by selecting 'low motion' or 'high motion' in settings. While the videos generated with V1 are only five seconds long, users can choose to extend them by four seconds up to four times, meaning that V1 videos could get as long as 21 seconds. Much like Midjourney's AI image models, early demos of V1's videos look somewhat otherworldly, rather than hyperrealistic. The initial response to V1 has been positive, though it's still unclear how well it matches up against other leading AI video models, which have been on the market for months or even years.
