NRL fans rally around Indi Carroll after sad setback for daughter of Manly legend

Yahoo5 hours ago

NRL fans are sending messages of support to Indi Carroll - a Manly cheerleader and daughter of club legend Mark Carroll - after she revealed she'd been knocked back from joining the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. For the second year running, Indi has been left heartbroken to miss out on selection for the most famous cheerleading squad in the world.
The 26-year-old, who has been a cheerleader for Manly for the last decade, made it to the final round of tryouts in Dallas. 'This past weekend, I had the incredible honour of standing among 80 phenomenal dancers on finals day for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders - a dream I've held close to my heart for as long as I can remember,' she said in a statement.
'Coming from Australia, my journey looked different. I didn't grow up in the same systems or with the same access, and I don't have a large social media following or a history in the American dance scene.
'Many of the women auditioning were not only remarkable performers but showcased years of specialised training, gymnastic foundations, and performance experience in styles I simply didn't invest in growing up in Australia, however I showed up anyway, as fully and authentically as I could. I brought everything I had - my heart, my training and my deep love for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleader's legacy.
"I danced with every ounce of passion I had, knowing I was representing not only myself, but also the community back home who dared to dream with me. Unfortunately, my journey came to an end (on Sunday). I didn't advance to training camp for a second attempt, and yes, that's hard to say because when you want something so deeply, it's hard to fall short."
The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are the subject of popular Netflix series 'America's Sweethearts', with Season 2 set to premiere in coming days. "I walk away from this experience incredibly proud," Indi added. "I left everything I had on that field. I carried a little piece of Sydney with me to Dallas, Texas, and showed up wholeheartedly as myself.
'To be in that room, to be considered among the top 80 across the world, and to have represented where I'm from on such a world-class stage, that's something I will carry with pride forever. This journey teaches you to embrace your most vulnerable self, stand proud in a place that once felt impossible to reach and be proud of yourself regardless of the outcome.
'Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who believed in me and supported me throughout this journey. I'm not sure what next now, but I'm excited to find out.'

Indi's mother Monique is the director of the 'Seabirds' - Manly's cheerleading squad. Father Mark played 88 games for Manly across an illustrious first-grade career that also saw him represent NSW and Australia.
Indi's heartbreak comes with a tinge of happiness for fellow Aussie Faith Ward. The 22-year-old from Western Australia has been lucky enough to advance to the training camp phase of tryouts.
Fans took to social media to express their condolences for Indi, while imploring her to keep her head up and remain positive. "Two things my dad has always said - never let fear hold you back and if you can dream it, you can do it," she said last year.
At least you have it a shot, well done your family will be proud of you.

triple j Announces ‘Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs' For 50th Anniversary

triple j have revealed plans for a special-event Hottest 100, in which they plan to count down the Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs for the very first time – as voted by the station's listeners. The announcement comes as the youth broadcaster is celebrating its 50th year on air, having originally been launched as the Sydney-only station 2JJ back in January of 1975. The countdown is set to take place on Saturday, July 26th from 10am AEST, and will be simulcast on both triple and Double J. 'It's a big year for the triple j family, so what better way to toast our deep history than by doing our favourite thing: wringing our hands over trying to pick only 10 of our favourite songs released by Australian artists and bands,' the station shared in a statement. 'Nah, it'll be a breeze, right?' Any song released before January 19th, 2025 – triple j's 50th birthday – is eligible. The station has clarified, however, that Like A Versions performed by Australian artists are ineligible, as are songs where more than 50% of the featured artists are Australian. The station noted Mullumbimby native Iggy Azalea's 2014 chart-topper 'Fancy' (featuring the English Charli XCX) would be eligible, for instance, but 'Lose Control' by Young Franco (featuring US acts Earthgang and Jafunk) would not. The Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs will mark the 42nd Hottest 100 overall, as well as the 10th countdown to not focus on the year of music just passed. It follows on from 2023's Like A Version Hottest 100, which was conducted to celebrate 20 years of the station's flagship segment. The Hottest 100 of 2024 took place in January, and was topped by Chappell Roan's 'Good Luck, Babe!'. Voting is officially open for the Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs, and can be voted for here. Voting closes on Thursday, July 17th at 5pm AEST. triple j's Hottest 100 of Like A Version: 100-1 All The Trivia, Facts, And Broken Records Of Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2022 Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers Team Up with triple j's Concetta Caristo on 'The Song I Wrote When I Was 11' The post triple j Announces 'Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs' For 50th Anniversary appeared first on Music Feeds.

Dash after gash: 40 stitches couldn't stop star Dolphin

The Dolphins are creating waves after three weeks of all-time premiership form and hooker Jeremy Marshall-King is just happy to be part of it after surgery. The 29-year-old missed five games with leg lacerations that required surgery after getting infected. His last two matches have been 58-4 and 56-6 wins over North Queensland and St George Illawarra respectively after he missed the previous 44-8 win over Canterbury. Those victories made the Dolphins only one of six teams in premiership history to have won three straight games by 36 points. Marshall-King suffered bad cuts against Penrith in round six and came back too soon in round nine against Sydney Roosters before missing the following four games. On Tuesday he spoke about his ordeal for the first time. "Everyone thought it was just a little scratch but it was two cuts on my leg that were pretty deep," he said. "It got infected at one point and probably didn't heal enough when I came back. I reopened it and had to go back in and get surgery. "They had to clean it out because it got infected and I had over 40 stitches in my quad - inside and outside. "It wasn't nice but I had to get it done. It is a little setback in my footy this year but it is good to be back playing and getting the wins." It is the way the sixth-placed Dolphins are winning that is such a joy. Their attack is on fire and defensively they have been elite, despite missing Daniel Saifiti, Max Plath and Tom Gilbert to season-ending injuries. "It's been really fun and enjoyable the last three weeks and breaking those records as well," he said. "It is all about our connection as a group but it comes back to our defence. The last three weeks we have kept teams to 18 and not many teams do that. "Adversity has been part of this club since we started. We've had a lot of setbacks but us boys bond and connect a lot better when things happen like (injuries). We've got to keep going and be consistent in what we do." The Dolphins will miss captain Felise Kaufusi to suspension for the next fortnight with hooker Harrison Graham set to come onto the bench against Newcastle in Perth on Saturday afternoon. That will allow standout utility Kurt Donoghoe to play longer minutes at lock and not have to slot in at hooker when Marshall-King has a rest. "Kurt's a great player. His ball playing around the middle opens up our edges as well and that is something we had probably been missing," Marshall-King said. "It takes pressure off our halves. He's done a wonderful job."

Massive double blow for Broncos an Qld after veteran suffers injury 'setback'

The Brisbane Broncos have been hit with a fresh blow after the bye round with Michael Maguire still unable to select Ben Hunt after the star suffered a slight setback during his recovery. Broncos coach Maguire is facing plenty of pressure to get the club back on a winning streak having only won two of his last eight games in charge. The Broncos were able to bounce back against the Titans before the bye thanks to the return of Reece Walsh with the squad able to rest up and reset before round 16. Maguire would have been hoping to have the experience of Hunt back for selection against the Sharks this weekend as the Broncos look to carry over the momentum against the 5th placed team. The veteran has not featured in the starting XIII after injuring himself in round 10. Hunt injured his hamstring against the Rabbitohs and limped off the field during the loss. In Hunt's absence, Ezra Mam slotted into five-eighth role after his NRL suspension came to an end. And the coach is expected to use Hunt as the No.9 when he returns, which would see Cory Paix or Billy Walters drop out of the side. Hunt has thrived in the representative arena throughout his career as a No.9, which saw him play some of his best footy for Queensland during State of Origin. While he has played as a halfback for the majority of his NRL career, he was always signed at the Broncos with the idea of playing a dummy-half role with Adam Reynolds their chief playmaker. But Maguire hasn't had the opportunity to start Hunt in this role and he will have to wait with the veteran set to spend another week on the sideline. Hunt hasn't recovered in time for the Sharks clash with his hamstring not ready. This could also be seen as a blow for Queensland coach Billy Slater. Harry Grant has enjoyed his best Origin moments coming off the bench for Queensland with Hunt starting and taking on the early workload. While Hunt was no certainty to play in 2025, Slater would have liked the option of choosing the veteran having chopped and changed his team for Game 2 in Perth. The coach will be hoping NSW prop Payne Haas backs up after Origin on Wednesday with Ben Te Kura ruled out for six to eight weeks. Te Kura had only just joined the side in recent weeks having gone back to QLD Cup and proved his worth to Maguire in the first-half of the season. However, Te Kura will miss six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on an injury, according to AAP reporter Joel Gould. Te Kura's injury could have also prompted Maguire to bolster the forward depth by signing journeyman forward Ben Talty with immediate effect. Talty has been in the Melbourne Storm system since 2023, plying his trade with the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup.
