England head coach Brendon McCullum has revealed the team's mindset as they prepare for the upcoming Test series against India. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, McCullum said that the team is no longer just trying to improve but aiming to become a side that every English fan can be proud of.
McCullum sets bold goal for England team
The former New Zealand skipper believes the timing is right to aim for something big. England are slated to host India for a five-match Test series starting on 24 June. It will be their first major red-ball contest of the new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) for both teams. England have performed poorly in the first three editions of the WTC and would want to make amends this time around.

'We're not trying to pick this team up any more. It's a matter of taking this team from a good team into being something English people are really proud of. We're actually travelling pretty good but there's an opportunity now. We're working from a position of strength but now's the time where we shoot for the stars,' McCullum said.

McCullum on facing India
McCullum also highlighted how the challenge of facing India is something the team is excited about. The last time India toured England, they managed to draw the series. However, McCullum and his boys would want to hand India a defeat this time to start their campaign on a high.
'There's no greater opportunity than playing in big series against the best opposition on the biggest stage under the brightest lights to be able to test that,' he said on the upcoming series against India.
Before they face India, England will take on Zimbabwe in a historic Test match, the first time in 22 years the African side will play red-ball cricket in England. McCullum warned against underestimating any opponent.
'This game has an amazing ability to bring you back down to earth if you don't have the respect for the game or the respect for the opposition. We go into it as favourites so we need to make sure we're rock hard fit and ready to go and make good decisions under pressure,' he said.

Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy set to debut in England-India Test series
A fresh chapter in Test cricket history is set to unfold this summer as England and India will contest a new series trophy named in honour of two legends of the game — Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson. The Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be unveiled ahead of the highly anticipated five-match Test series, which begins on June 20 at Headingley. This new trophy pays tribute to Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar, the highest run-scorer in Test cricket with a staggering 15,921 runs across 200 matches from 1989 to 2013, and England's James Anderson, the most prolific fast bowler in Test history with 704 wickets. Anderson, now 42, continues to represent Lancashire in county cricket after retiring from the international arena last year. He has also taken on the role of England's bowling consultant. Sachin and Anderson honoured ahead of England tour of India The decision to honour the pair with a dedicated trophy reflects their iconic status in the game and mirrors similar recognitions like the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, awarded during England's 2023 Test series in New Zealand, named after Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe. Tendulkar and Anderson's on-field rivalry was notable, with the English pacer dismissing the Indian batting legend nine times—more than any other bowler in Tendulkar's career. The duo faced off in 14 Test matches, creating unforgettable moments for fans across the world. Previously, Test series between England and India held in the UK were played for the Pataudi Trophy, named after the legendary Pataudi family, who had strong cricketing ties with both countries. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reportedly informed the Pataudi family about the change, although they have yet to publicly comment. England were the last holders of the Pataudi Trophy after a drawn 2-2 series in 2021–2022, which was impacted by COVID-19 disruptions. In India, the Test series is still contested for the Anthony de Mello Trophy, though it's currently unclear whether the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will eventually replace it. India are the reigning holders of that title following their dominant 4-1 victory over England in early 2024. The ECB has not officially commented on the introduction of the new trophy, but its significance is already resonating with fans of both nations.

Man United looks to overhaul forward line as it targets Mbeumo after Cunha signing
Manchester United has made a move for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Thursday. The person spoke on the condition of confidentiality because United has not publicly declared its interest. The 20-time English league champion is planning to overhaul a team that has just come off its worst season in the Premier League era and missed out on qualification for any European competition. United coach Ruben Amorim has identified his forward line as an area in need of major improvement. ALSO READ: USA announces squad for CONCACAF Gold Cup: Sergino Dest misses out due to fitness concerns A deal has already been agreed for Brazil forward Matheus Cunha, and Mbeumo would add further strength to an attack that had the fifth-worst scoring record in the Premier League. English media said a bid of 55 million pounds ($74.8 million) was made for Mbeumo. The 25-year-old Cameroon international had 20 goals last season. By comparison, United strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scored just 18 between them in all competitions. United ended the campaign in 15th — its lowest finish in the modern era and just three places above the relegation zone. United also set unwanted club records for the most losses in a Premier League season and the lowest points total.
