Gill-Pant stand power India past 450, but Eng hit back

Leeds, June 21 (UNI) Rishabh Pant lit up Headingley with a brilliant counterattacking century, his seventh in Test cricket, as India powered their way past 450 on Day 2, only to see England claw back with late wickets.
At lunch, India stood at 454 for 7 in 108.4 overs, after England chose to field on the opening morning of the 1st Test.
India resumed Day 2 in full control, and the first 90 minutes belonged entirely to the visitors. Pant and Shubman Gill continued from where they left off on Day 1, adding quick runs with flair and purpose. The 4th-wicket stand between them swelled to 209, setting the tone for India's dominance.
Pant, ever the showman, was at his mischievous best — treating the Headingley spectators to a mix of audacious strokeplay and pure theatre. He brought up his century with a six over wide midwicket off Shoaib Bashir, then marked it with a celebratory somersault. It was his third century in England and his sixth as a wicketkeeper — equalling MS Dhoni's record. No other Indian keeper-batsman has scored more than one hundred in England.
Pant's century came off 146 balls and featured 10 fours and 6 sixes, the most in any of his Test tons.
However, just as India looked set to bat England out of the contest, the morning ended in a flurry of wickets. Shubman Gill fell for a classy 147, skying Bashir to deep square leg, ending the 209-run partnership. Moments later, Karun Nair, making a long-awaited return after eight years, was dismissed for a duck, brilliantly caught by Ollie Pope at cover.
Pant's dismissal was laced with drama — first surviving a chaotic misbalance on 124, then eventually falling LBW to Josh Tongue after misjudging a ball he didn't offer a shot to, batting on 134. India burned a review, but umpire Paul Reiffel's decision stood.
Shardul Thakur compounded the collapse by edging Ben Stokes behind just before the break. Stokes, leading by example yet again, claimed 2 wickets in the session and has 4 for 66 — the standout bowler for England so far.
At the break, RA Jadeja was unbeaten on 2, with India seven down and needing to rebuild once again.
Match Summary at Lunch, Day 2
India: 454/7 in 108.4 overs (CRR: 4.17)
Top Scorers: Shubman Gill 147, Rishabh Pant 134
England's Best: Ben Stokes 4/66

Duckett, Pope rebuild as Eng reach 107/1 at Tea

Leeds, June 21 (UNI) England went to Tea on Day 2 at 107 for 1 in 24 overs, with Ben Duckett (53*) and Ollie Pope (48*) steering a strong reply after an early blow from Jasprit Bumrah. Trailing India by 364 runs, the hosts showed resilience on a surface that remained friendly for batting despite morning clouds and post-lunch drizzle. India, resuming with purpose, built on a dominant fourth-wicket stand between Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Pant lit up the innings with a stroke-filled 134, his seventh Test century, equaling MS Dhoni's tally for most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper. Gill contributed, and their partnership was worth 200 runs off 287 balls, helping India post an imposing 471 all out in 113 overs. Extras contributed a generous 27 runs. However, England's response was not without early nerves. Bumrah struck in his first over, dismissing Zak Crawley with a classic outswinger that found the edge, safely pouched by Karun Nair at slip. But thereafter, both Duckett and Pope played with positive intent and controlled aggression. The pair survived two big chances off Bumrah — Pope edging through the vacant fourth slip early in his innings, and Duckett dropped by Ravindra Jadeja at backward point on 15. Capitalising on their reprieves, they built a 103-run unbeaten stand, keeping India's attack at bay under floodlights and against a Dukes ball. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna proved less threatening, going for over 4 and 6 an over respectively, as the English duo milked the gaps and rotated strike with ease. Despite a brief rain interruption after lunch, conditions continued to favour the batsmen. As the final session of Day 2 begins, England trail by 364 runs, but with two well-set batsmen at the crease and a docile pitch, they look to continue their fightback deep into the evening. Rishabh Pant's Unique Six-Hitting Stat In Record-Breaking Innings At Leeds

Rishabh Pant broke multiple records en rout to scoring his seventh century. India's Rishabh Pant surpassed MS Dhoni for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test cricket, achieving his seventh century on the second day of the series opener against England. Pant hit a six off the first ball of the 100th over in India's first innings, clearing the fence off Shoaib Bashir to reach the milestone. This was his first century since September 2024, when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had accumulated 4,876 runs with six centuries and 33 fifties, averaging 38.09. During this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12 fours, 6 sixes), Pant also completed 3,000 runs in 44 Tests, boasting 15 fifties and an average of nearly 44. He remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Wriddhiman Saha is third on this list with two centuries, followed by Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer, who also have two each. Nayan Mongia has scored one century. Pant's 6-Hitting Record The wicket-keeper-batter achieved a remarkable feat in a Test innings in England by hitting six sixes, the highest number by a visiting batter in the sport's history. This accomplishment also places him as the joint-second-highest scorer by an Indian in a Test innings away from home, behind Hardik Pandya's seven against Sri Lanka in 2017. Rishabh Pant 's innings of 134 runs is the second-highest by a wicketkeeper at Headingley, only behind Jonny Bairstow's 140 against Sri Lanka in 2016. Pant's notable achievement of hitting a century with a six has become a hallmark of his Test career. He has achieved this remarkable feat three times in Tests, all against England. His first century with a six was against Adil Rashid at The Oval in 2018, followed by Joe Root in Ahmedabad in 2021, and Shoaib Bashir in Leeds. Among Indian batsmen, only Sachin Tendulkar (six) and Rohit Sharma (three) are around Pant's numbers. Since 2002, Pant has been the only batter to hit a six to complete his hundred more frequently than any other player. Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Kumar Sangakkara, Rohit Sharma, and Kusal Mendis have also achieved this feat three times during this period.
