Arkansas State Police bomb squad unveils new dog-like robot

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas State Police introduced a new member of their bomb squad and SWAT mission team on Monday, a robot dog courtesy of Boston Dynamics.
Affectionately named 'Buford,' after a former bomb squad commander and retired Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agent Bill Buford, the department says it will be used in multiple missions to mitigate the risk of life.
'We can use this to go into dangerous situations where we won't have to send an individual,' said Corporal Josh Berry, a bomb technician with the Arkansas State Police.

In those dangerous situations, Berry says the robot, which a member of the department will control, will use artificial intelligence in training to do things like open doors, deliver throw phones, and capture surveillance of a scene before officers would have to be deployed.
The robot dog moves on four legs while being controlled by an officer. It uses thermal vision and video recording technology to give officers a set of eyes in a potentially dangerous and life-threatening area from afar.
Berry said it would be an addition to their robots already in use on the force.
Federal grant money paid for the $282,000 robot. This coming Tuesday and Wednesday, Berry said the state police bomb squad team will undergo 16 hours of hands-on training with Boston Dynamics before the new addition is deployed in the field.
'It's easier than some of our other platforms, we can load this up and put it in a vehicle real quick, versus having to take on of our large response vehicles,' Berry said.

Berry said the robot's battery life is 90 minutes before it needs to be replaced, adding that Buford is the first of its kind in Arkansas.
'We're not sure on how long it will last, but the great thing they do is send us [software] updates at no additional cost,' Berry said.
Berry said they've already shown the robot off at various school events around the central Arkansas area, and any similar future technological investments will be gauged by how well Buford performs in the field.

A Border Patrol agent died in 2009. His widow is still fighting a backlogged US program for benefits

When her husband died after a grueling U.S. Border Patrol training program for new agents, Lisa Afolayan applied for the federal benefits promised to families of first responders whose lives are cut short in the line of duty. Sixteen years later, Afolayan and her two daughters haven't seen a penny, and program officials are defending their decisions to deny them compensation. She calls it a nightmare that too many grieving families experience.

Little Rock man killed in pursuit following string of armed robberies in Conway

BEE BRANCH, Ark. — A 23-year-old Little Rock man is dead following a string of armed gas station robberies in Conway and Damascus that ended in a fatal high-speed crash on Highway 65, police confirmed. The man, identified as Joey Simmons, allegedly began his crime spree early Wednesday morning at the Phillips 66 gas station on Skyline Drive in Conway. According to Conway police, Simmons entered the store wearing a black T-shirt, shorts, a ski mask and wielding a rifle. He reportedly told the clerk he was 'on a mission from God' before making off with approximately $200 in cash. Armed robbery suspect dies after police pursuit, crash in Van Buren County While officers were investigating that robbery, a second 911 call came in—this time from Snappy's gas station in Damascus, just down the road. Again, police say Simmons entered with a rifle and demanded money at gunpoint before fleeing the scene. A 'Be On The Lookout' alert was issued by authorities, and not long after, Arkansas State Police spotted a black Toyota Camry matching the suspect's vehicle description on Highway 65. When spotted Simmons sparked a high-speed pursuit that ended in Bee Branch. Local resident Gary Elliott described the moment the chase came to a sudden, violent end in a culvert beside his home. 'It was about ten minutes to eight,' Elliott recalled. 'I was getting dressed, putting my shoes on, and I heard the siren. Then all of a sudden, the siren cut off real quick. I heard a big bang out in front of the house.' Stepping outside, Elliott discovered his mailbox had been destroyed in the crash and tire marks led to the culvert beside his home off the highway. 'I didn't see anything at first,' he said. 'So I got down from the porch and walked towards the sidewalk and I saw my mailbox was gone. The pole was leaning into the weeds. The cops were down there, and I didn't learn until the next day what happened.' Perry County deputy injured in Sunday chase Simmons' vehicle had veered off the road and crashed, killing him at the scene. Police recovered $192 in cash from inside the car. Conway police say the recovered money was returned to the Phillips 66. 'Luckily he went straight and didn't turn a little more and run into my car or the house,' Elliott added. 'I don't understand how he got to this side of the street if he was headed toward Clinton. It's just strange.' No officers or civilians were injured in the incident. Man accused of kidnapping, selling teen for sex indicted in Federal court

CROCKETT COUNTY, Texas () – A man accused of kidnaping a teenage girl, as well as her baby, and selling the girl for sex has been indicted in Federal court. Devin Maurice Harmon was indicted for Transportation of a Minor with Intent to Engage in Criminal Sexual Activity and Tampering with a Witness and Victim during Federal court in Abilene Thursday morning. Members of the Crockett County Sheriff's Office initially made contact with Harmon, the teen victim, and her 2-year-old son when they received a courtesy ride from deputies to their hotel after experiencing car trouble on I-10 in July 2024. Court documents reveal an investigation began after marijuana was found in their vehicle, prompting detectives to search their hotel room as well. Both Harmon and the victim were interviewed during the investigation, and the documents state that Harmon initially lied about the victim's identity then gave several conflicting stories as to how they met. The child also indicted she was involved in a sexual relationship with Harmon and that the 2-year-old child could be his, so detectives took DNA swabs. Detectives later learned the teenage victim had been listed on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's database as a kidnapping/rape victim since 2023. Harmon was interviewed again the next day, and the documents state that he eventually admitting to knowing the teenage victim was on the database and confirmed they had an ongoing sexual relationship and that the 2-year-old child could belong to him. He also allegedly admitted to knowing she was underage, so he was arrested for Sexual Assault of a Child. Harmon was later charged with Tampering with a Witness after calls from jail showed he attempted to contact the victim in an attempt to get her to change her story more than 70 times. In May 2025, the documents state DNA testing revealed the 2-year-old child did not belong to Harmon, which triggered the FBI to interview the teenage victim again. During this interview, the documents state the teenage victim revealed she met Harmon on a public transportation bus after running away from home in 2022 and that he sexually assaulted her multiple times then began selling her to other men. This victim claims she engaged in sex acts in exchange for money with more than 100 men in a 2-year period, and these exchanges were arranged by Harmon, who set up accommodations for hotels then took all of the money she made when she was done. According to the documents, Harmon and the victim were on their way to Louisiana, where more prostitution was scheduled to take place. No further information is available at this time.
