Panthers visit the Oilers in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final with the series tied
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Leon Draisaitl scoring in overtime to tie the Stanley Cup Final for the Edmonton Oilers ensured the series against the Florida Panthers cannot be decided in Game 5 on Saturday night.
Hockey's hallowed trophy will not yet be in the building. But it is guaranteed to be on Tuesday night back in Sunrise, making Game 5
another pivotal swing point
in the NHL's
championship series rematch
.
'The team that can move on fastest is going to be have the best chance,' Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk said. 'The team that moves on from this and team that recovers the fastest is going to have the bigger advantage.'
The coaches involved, Florida's Paul Maurice and Edmonton's Kris Knoblauch, don't believe much in game-to-game momentum, and that theory has played out so far. Draisaitl and Brad Marchand
traded OT heroics
in the first two, the Panthers
won the next in a rout,
and took a three-goal lead in Game 4 before the
Oilers erased it
and got another from Draisaitl to even things up.
The Oilers are favored to go up 3-2 and are slightly favored to win it all, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. The Panthers have won 10 of the 11 playoff series they have been in over the past three years, including a year ago
beating Edmonton in seven games
in the final.
This has been different but still feels like it could go the distance.
'It's two good teams, and they're equally matched and you're going to get some good hockey,' said
40-year-old Oilers winger
Corey Perry, whose first intermission speech helped spark their Game 4 comeback. 'There are some superstars on both sides of the puck. It's fun to be a part of.'

Oilers back on home ice for Game 5 with Stanley Cup final tied 2-2
A Florida Panthers shot hits the crossbar behind Edmonton Oilers goalie Calvin Pickard during overtime in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final in Sunrise, Fla., on Thursday. (Nathan Denette/The Canadian Press - image credit) The Edmonton Oilers are back on home ice Saturday for a critical game in their Stanley Cup final series against the Florida Panthers, with the teams tied at two games apiece. The Oilers evened the series on Thursday with an overtime goal by Leon Draisaitl — his record-setting fourth OT marker of this year's NHL playoffs — capping off a wild game that saw Edmonton overcome a 3-0 deficit. Advertisement Calvin Pickard will start in goal for the Oilers on Saturday after coming in for the second period of Game 4 and making 23 saves, including several show-stoppers. WATCH | Oilers fans prepare for Game 5 in Edmonton: Stuart Skinner was pulled after letting in three goals on 17 shots, but also making some key saves, in a first period dominated by the Panthers. The Oilers then scored four straight, before Florida's Sam Reinhart fired back with 19 seconds left in the third to send the game into overtime. Game 4 was the third of the series to go to an extra period, with the two teams looking evenly matched apart from the Panthers' 6-1 Game 3 blowout. Advertisement Edmonton is hoping for more heroics from Pickard, who stepped up in the first round to replace Skinner with his team down two games to none against the Los Angeles Kings. He went on to win six straight games before getting injured in Round 2 against the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The winner of Saturday's game will just need one more victory to capture the Stanley Cup. Game coverage starts at 8 p.m. ET/6 p.m. MT on CBC.

Oilers turning to Calvin Pickard for Stanley Cup Game 5 nod in historic goalie shuffle
It's never too late to change goalies. Two wins shy of capturing their first Stanley Cup since 1990, the Oilers are turning to Calvin Pickard to replace Stuart Skinner as the starting goalie for Game 5 at 8 p.m. Saturday. Advertisement The best-of-seven series against the Panthers is tied 2-2. The last Stanley Cup winner to have multiple goalies record decisions in the finals — without an injury to necessitate a change — was the 1972 Bruins, according to ESPN Research. Pickard earned his career-defining moment after coming off the bench in each of the last two games. He made 17 straight saves and 22 on 23 shots in Game 4 to allow the Oilers to forge a stunning three-goal comeback and steal an overtime win. AP It's not unfamiliar territory for Pickard, who entered the playoffs as a backup but took over for Skinner during the first-round series against the Kings and reeled off six straight wins. He might have held onto the job if not for an injury that forced the Oilers to go back to Skinner. Advertisement Pickard has won seven straight decisions, including Game 4. 'But I think the deciding factor for us was we won the previous game and Picks made a lot of big saves.' The last time that a Stanley Cup champion split goalie responsibilities so evenly was in 2017, when the Penguins got nine wins from Marc-Andre Fleury and seven from Matt Murray.

Pickard set to start in goal for the Oilers in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Panthers
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Calvin Pickard was set to start in goal for the Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers on Saturday night. Pickard stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced in relief of Stuart Skinner to help win Game 4 on Thursday night in Florida, tying the best-of-seven series. Pickard last started a game early in the second round against Vegas. He was injured and gave way to Skinner from that point until midway through the final. Pickard is 7-0 in the playoffs. The 33-year-old journeyman has spent the past two NHL seasons with Edmonton, his sixth team. 'He's been doing this for a long time,' teammate Evander Kane said. 'He has a ton of experience and been a lot of different dressing rooms. That can help you along when you do come on to different teams, making a little bit of an easier transition. Now you're just seeing that off-ice translate on to the ice with his performance, and how much he's helped us to where we are here today.' Sergei Bobrovsky was set to make his 22nd consecutive start for the Panthers this postseason. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and
