Dave Shapiro, music agent behind Sum 41 and Vanessa Carlton, among six killed in San Diego plane crash
SAN DIEGO, May 24 — The six people onboard a small plane that crash-landed in a California neighbourhood amid dense fog were all killed, according to investigating authorities.
The Cessna 550 Citation, which federal records show belonged to music agent Dave Shapiro, struck a power line before plummeting into a residential area of San Diego at 3.47am (1047 GMT/6.47pm Malaysian time) on Thursday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
'The pilot and passengers were fatally injured,' NTSB investigator Dan Baker told a press conference on Friday. He added that no one on the ground had been seriously hurt.
While Baker did not specify the number of fatalities, the US Federal Aviation Administration previously said the private plane had six people onboard.
The San Diego County medical examiner's office named three of the victims as Shapiro, 42, Emma Huke, 25, and Celina Kenyon, 36.
Music veteran Shapiro was a co-founder of Sound Talent Group, which has represented artists including Sum 41 and Vanessa Carlton.
The company told US media that two other members of its staff, booking assistants Huke and Kendall Fortner, were also killed in the crash.
'We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends. Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted,' Sound Talent Group said in a statement.
Kenyon was a professional photographer and mother, according to her social media. Her father, Bryan Charles Feldman, told NBC7 she had chosen to fly home early with friends after a photo shoot rather than take a commercial plane so she could take her daughter to school the next day.
NBC7 identified the other victims as software engineer Dominic Damian and Daniel Williams, a former drummer for metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada.
'No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever,' the band wrote in a tribute to Williams on Instagram.
In San Diego's Murphy Canyon neighbourhood, at least 10 homes were hit by debris, while the site of the fiery crash was littered with charred remnants of cars and scattered fiberglass.
It was not immediately clear what caused the Cessna to come plunging into the bloc, setting several houses alight. The NTSB said the pilot had not reported any problems to air traffic control or declared an emergency.
Runway approach lights and an automated weather reporting system were not operational at the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport at the time, according to the NTSB's Baker.
'We are trying to determine at this time if the airplane was equipped with a cockpit voice recorder,' Baker said.
The NTSB said its preliminary investigation would take several weeks to complete. — AFP

They are among the Americans convicted of crimes who have received pardons from President Donald Trump since he took office in January. And while US presidents have doled out questionable pardons in the past, Trump is doing so 'in a bigger, more aggressive way with sort of no sense of shame,' said Kermit Roosevelt, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania. 'The pardon power has always been a little bit problematic because it's this completely unconstrained power that the president has,' Roosevelt told AFP. 'Most presidents have issued at least some pardons where people look at them and they say: 'This seems to be self-serving' or 'This seems to be corrupt in some way.'' But Trump is doling out pardons 'that look like they're almost quid pro quo for financial donations,' Roosevelt said. Among those receiving a pardon was Paul Walczak, a nursing home executive convicted of tax crimes and whose mother attended a US$1-million-per-plate fund-raising dinner at Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in April. Other beneficiaries of Trump pardons include reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley, who were serving lengthy prison sentences for bank fraud and tax evasion. Their daughter, Savannah, is a prominent Trump supporter and gave a speech at last year's Republican National Convention. More than half a dozen former Republican lawmakers convicted of various crimes have also received pardons along with a Virginia sheriff sentenced to 10 years in prison for taking US$75,000 in bribes. On his first day in office, Trump pardoned more than 1,500 supporters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 as they sought to prevent congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden's 2020 election victory. The next day, Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, who had been serving a life sentence for running the 'Silk Road' online marketplace that facilitated millions of dollars of drug sales. 'Just another deal' Barbara McQuade, a former prosecutor who now teaches law at the University of Michigan, said Trump is not the first president to be accused of 'allowing improper factors to influence their pardon decisions.' 'It at least appears that you are using the Office of the Pardon Attorney to dole out pardons as favors to the President's loyal political followers and most generous donors,' Raskin wrote. Martin for his part has made no secret of the partisan nature of the pardons recommended by his office. 'No MAGA left behind,' Martin said on X after the pardon of the bribe-taking Virginia sheriff, a reference to Trump's 'Make America Great Again' slogan. Lee Kovarsky, a University of Texas law professor, said Trump's 'pardon spree' opens up a 'menacing new frontier of presidential power' that he calls 'patronage pardoning.' (AFP pic) WASHINGTON : Tech billionaire Elon Musk has deleted an explosive allegation linking Donald Trump with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein that he posted on social media during a vicious public fallout with the US president this week. Musk – who just exited his role as a top White House adviser – alleged on Thursday that the Republican leader is featured in unreleased government files on former associates of Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while he faced sex trafficking charges. The Trump administration has acknowledged it is reviewing tens of thousands of documents, videos and investigative material that his 'MAGA' movement says will unmask public figures complicit in Epstein's crimes. Trump was named in a trove of deposition and statements linked to Epstein that were unsealed by a New York judge in early 2024. The president has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the case. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files,' Musk posted on his social media platform, X as his growing feud with the president boiled over into a spectacularly public row. But the White House denied reports they would talk.
