Nationwide Telecommunication Blackout Hits Spain
Rabat — Spain woke up to a major telecommunications crisis early Saturday when phone and internet services crashed across the country.
The outage reportedly struck around 5 a.m., knocking out service for customers of all major providers, including Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Digimobil, and O2, according to outage tracker Downdetector.
Most of mainland Spain felt the impact. Internet users in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga, Murcia, and Bilbao reported complete signal loss and internet failures.
The blackout also spread to the Basque Country, Aragon, and the Valencian Community. While the Balearic Islands escaped largely unaffected, some residents in the Canary Islands experienced connectivity problems.
The situation turned serious when several emergency 112 lines went down. Regional authorities quickly published alternative phone numbers for police and emergency services.
Spanish broadcaster RTVC shared backup contact information for local police, national police, and the Guardia Civil.
Telefonica, Spain's biggest telecommunications company, confirmed, their engineers are working to fix the problem. Emergency lines in Aragon have returned to normal operation, but many regions still face disruptions.

Local newspaper El Correo suggested the blackout might stem from a network upgrade, though officials haven't confirmed this theory.
This crisis comes just four weeks following a similar major nationwide power outage that triggered panic across Spain and Portugal.
That incident affected roughly 50 million people, causing widespread chaos by cutting power, stopping public transportation, disabling traffic lights, and shutting down ATMs.

Rabat – Algeria's regime has again been caught red-handed disseminating false information regarding Rwanda's alleged support for the Polisario Front's separatist agenda in Western Sahara. The regime's mouthpiece media echoed disinformation in which the separatist group claimed that President Paul Kagame had reaffirmed Kigali's support for its self-determination and referendum claims in recent comments. Pro-Polisario websites, including Algeria's regime press agency, claimed that the comments came while President Kagame and his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, exchanged views on tensions and conflicts in Africa. During that exchange, they claimed, both leaders stressed their allegedly shared'support for the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination through a free, fair, and transparent referendum.' Yet these claims were clearly and directly refuted by Kigali merely hours after the Polisario press and Algeria's news agency had run their reports, once again dealing another setback to Algeria's besieged and increasingly exposed narrative on the Sahara dispute. In stark contrast to the statement reported by the Algerian state media, Kagama's official website published a communique detailing his remarks with no explicit or implicit mention of Rwanda's support for the Polisario. To Algeria's dismay, this reflects a direct contradiction to the Algerian regime's disinformation campaign seeking to challenge Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces. The embarrassing move further exposes Algeria's growing desperation to derail Morocco's deepening momentum on the Sahara dispute. The Moroccan Autonomy Plan has gained massive international backing over the past few years and months, with a growing cohort of countries applauding the Moroccan proposal as the most serious and credible political roadmap to end the dispute over Western Sahara. The latest such backing came from one of the UN Security Council's Permanent members, the UK, which on Sunday expressed its support for Morocco's autonomy plan as the most viable path to a lasting and politically realistic resolution of the lingering territorial dispute. While Rwanda is one of the few countries that still recognizes the self-styled SADR, the country does not embrace Algeria's consistently combatively anti-Moroccan narrative and attitude. In fact , following King Mohammed VI's historic visit to Rwanda in 2016, Rabat and Kigali have constantly pledged to strengthen relations at many levels. In particular, discussions have explored the need to expand bilateral ties on agriculture, trade, and high-level political cooperation on a wide range of strategic challenges facing the continent. T he two countries signed several agreements during the royal visit, including a Memoranda of Understanding on a political consultation mechanism, an air service agreement, an agreement on the exemption of visas, and a deal on security cooperation and tourism. In recent years, the two countries have constantly stressed the importance of maintaining or improving their bilateral cooperation at all levels. This new spirit of mutual support was particularly on display when Rwanda supported Morocco's return to the African Union in 2017. This latest fabricated news from the Algerian and Polisario media shows their desperation to undermine Morocco's growing momentum in the Sahara dossier. However, as more and more countries embrace the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the best chance for peace and prosperity in the region, or simply recognise Morocco's historical legitimacy, many observers believe that Algeria's constant attempts to challenge Morocco's growing momentum will not restore the prestige and legitimacy the exposed Algerian narrative once enjoyed. Operation Marhaba 2025: 29 Ships Prepare for 3.5 Million Travelers
Doha – Morocco has finalized preparations for Operation Marhaba 2025, focusing on four key priorities: traffic flow management, strengthened security, proximity support, and enhanced health vigilance. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita outlined these measures during a weekly oral questions session at the House of Councilors on Tuesday. The maritime component will feature 29 vessels from seven shipping companies operating 12 routes from ports in Italy, France, and Spain. Approximately MAD 28 million ($2.8 million) has been allocated to improve reception infrastructure at the Tanger-Med port. This year's operation anticipates an exceptional influx of approximately 3.5 million travelers, mainly Moroccans residing in Europe, representing a 4% increase from previous years. An estimated 890,000 vehicles are expected to cross the strait this summer, marking a 5% increase. This rise may be linked to the Spanish government's regularization program, allowing thousands of migrants to normalize their status and travel. The operation will feature over 12,000 maritime crossings—an 84% increase compared to 2004. 'Security and safety will be reinforced through enhanced border control mechanisms,' Bourita said. The operation will deploy 24 reception centers—18 within Morocco and six abroad—along with additional human resources in accordance with royal instructions. Staff numbers will increase, and mobile consulates will be established 'to support this large-scale operation under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, benefiting three million citizens,' according to the minister. Health vigilance remains a priority with specialized teams positioned along routes and at rest areas. 'The goal is to improve this operation year after year, to meet His Majesty the King's ambition,' Bourita noted. A massive joint workforce of approximately 60,000 personnel will be mobilized across all sectors. Streamlined reentry for Moroccan expats The Customs and Indirect Tax Administration (ADII) announced new facilities for Moroccan expatriates on May 28. Notably, Moroccans aged 60 and above who have lived abroad for at least ten years can now benefit from a 90% reduction on the value of imported vehicles. Provincial and Prefectural Customs Directors can now validate applications based on authenticated documents, including residence certificates, foreign ID cards with overseas addresses, or consular registration cards. The administration has also simplified procedures for returning expatriates, who can benefit from a three-year aging allowance on their vehicle's age, limited to one vehicle per person and once in a lifetime. Previously required two-year pay slips for employees or tax declarations for merchants are no longer necessary. In Ceuta, authorities have launched a mobile application called 'Embolsamiento Ceuta' to manage traffic flow toward Morocco. Available in Spanish, French, and English, the app provides real-time estimates of waiting times at the Tarajal border crossing. Users receive a digital ticket with a QR code required for entry and exit from the regulation area, with paper tickets available for those without smartphones. Ceuta has also increased staffing with up to ten agents daily working in three shifts. Infrastructure improvements include more shaded areas and new drinking water points.
